I believe the dock, and most modern electronics these days, are designed that power stops being supplied when the charge is full. There shouldn't be any negative effect to leaving it in the dock

Peek-a-boo

Popped into HMV on my lunch break today to pick up my copy of 'Doctor Strange' on Blu-ray and, much to my amazement, I could see that they were demonstrating the Nintendo Switch in store!

I was surprised at how light it feels, and how tactile the controls are, given the loose and cheap-feeling nature of the buttons and sticks on the Wii U GamePad. The display is better than I expected too, although it didn't quite give me that wow factor when I glanced upon that OLED screen on the PS Vita for the first time.

I'm more of a home console than a handheld/portable person, but I still had that 'new toy feeling', which I last experienced with the PS Vita, funnily enough. I also LOVE the neon colour scheme for the Joy-Cons; makes the whole system feel approachable and friendly for everybody.

Hardware wise, I am really impressed!

Then I craned my neck up to the shelves and openly gawped at the prices for all the accessories, the games and the Nintendo Switch itself.

If I wanted to buy a Nintendo Switch, a copy of Breath of the Wild and a Pro Controller (given that I would play/use it as a home console), I'd be expected to cough up nearly £400/$500 (!)

I have never paid more than £300 for a console, especially one without a bundled game or two.

The prices for the accessories are also ludicrous; £65 for the Pro Controller, £80 for two Joy-Cons and a whooping £90 for a plastic dock with two USB sockets, the latter of which genuinely defies belief.

And whilst Breath of the Wild is being compared to Ocarina of Time in terms of (very high) standards, and is a brilliant launch title in its own right, the rest of the line-up is simply weak sauce. The Wii U was much better, and offered more variety and the all-important selection of third party games too.

1-2-Switch should have been a bundled inside every box, just like Wii Sports and Nintendo Land (in select bundles) was, as opposed to being nearly full price for what is essentially a short lived mini-games compilation.

Last but not least, to ask for full whack (£60/$60) for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe kind of bothers me too, seeing as there's nothing new outside of a couple of Splatoon characters as well as the long awaited return of Battle mode that should have been included in the original game from the start.

There's Super Mario Odyssey to look forward to later in the year though...

TL;DR - So yeah, the Nintendo Switch itself is surprisingly high quality, given the cheap and tacky GamePad that came before it however, outside of the one noticeable game, it is a rather uninspiring launch line-up... and those absurd prices, man!

An early 'work in process', I'd say.

:EDIT: Miiverse, StreetPass, the Internet Browser and Activity Log are now gone, nor is there apps of any kind such as Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify.

And those 'friend codes' is still a thing in the year 2017.

I should probably stop reading up about the Switch ... (>_<)

@Peek-a-boo Remember the official UK Store has the RRP for the systems and such. Yet retailers arent bound to it by law.

Pro controller is meant to be £59.99. MK8 Deluxe is £49.99. Retailers are upselling Nintendo stuff as usual

@Peek-a-boo Take a tip: don't shop in HMV.

I got my Switch + Zelda combined for £303.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can be pre-ordered for £41.99

And the Pro Controller is absolutely non-essential.

Anyway, I just came here to say how incredible Breath of the Wild is (I don't dare go in the BotW thread). I've been playing it for roughly 20hrs now I'd guess, but it still seems I am so early on in the adventure. I love pretty much everything about this game. The only thing that doesn't work well is when you're trying to put an item you're holding down into a bowl (don't have to do it often) - lining up the arrow to make sure you don't miss doesn't seem to quite work how it should (or I'm doing it wrong).

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

OH YEAH! (I'm done with the regional purchasing stuff for now, lol) How's the online multiplayer, I think some games out there have it already. (they're not big games or anything, but still) Just wondering if it's actually good since we'll have to pay for it later this year.

@BLP_Software Fair enough, but I am just telling you what I saw in the shop this afternoon.

It's a new system, and retailers are probably knocking the price up a little bit however, they were more than enough to put me off until I can buy the Nintendo Switch, a Pro Controller and a copy of Breath of the Wild altogether for £300, which isn't going to happen any time soon!

The hardware really is fantastic and one game in particular is the talk of the town; the rest however leaves a lot to be desired, especially those prices for the accessories.

@Peek-a-boo I honestly say a Pro isnt needed immediately. I have one and found something I enjoy just as much in the joycons being in each hand.

Im just amazed at Breath of the Wild like @gcunit and I can probably say on a hardware level its my favourite system ever.

And if the library holds up like this or even close to it...move over PS2

Snipperclips is addictive as hell, it may not look like much but it is top fun.

Switch games list,

Legend of Zelda BotW, Human resource machine, NBA Playgrounds, Street Fighter 2, Super Bomberman R, Snipperclips, Overcooked, World of Goo.

@scubydo Yup, Operative2-0 is right. Don't worry about it. I assume that the Switch is designed that way (it would be really weird if it wasn't). The battery will degrade over time though, that's just normal.

@Peek-a-boo I wouldn't say the Pro is necessary at all for the time being, but I'm still glad I got one. Mainly I just wanted it for competitive games and games that need a D-pad to be played efficiently, but it does also make playing solo/chill games a bit more enjoyable. I'd say it's worth a purchase, but not right now if you don't have the funds for it. Zelda can be played fine without one. It also depends on what control option you prefer.

Is it me or are the gyro controls much less sensitive/precise on the switch.

Maybe it's just a Zelda thing

Haruki_NLI

@Operative2-0 Im finding them ok. But im using joycons seperately.

What are you using for it?

Gyro has been VERY sensitive for me in Zelda. Perhaps too sensitive. Still, it's my go-to method for lining up shots with my bow and arrow.

I have to say, after experiencing the "HD Rumble" in games like Fast RMX and Puyo Puyo Tetris (Japanese eshop demo): I'm not impressed. It doesn't feel sufficiently different than normal controller rumble for me.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

TuVictus

I mainly use the pro controller. It feels more sluggish than the wii u gamepad. But it could just be Zelda

TuVictus

Haruki_NLI

@Ralizah HD Rumble feels more delicate, whereas regular vibrations are one forceful thing. This is notably in different parts of the controller and varying intensity. But not everyone is so receptive to certain sensations, though everyone misses it when its gone.

@Operative2-0 Havent used the Pro Controller. I do have to move my hands closer together when using the Joy-Con sometimes. Only time its been a problem is when in mid-air.

I think it may just be Zelda, as Splatoon seems very responsive.

@Ralizah
Have you done the ball count in 1-2 Switch? Though not worth 50 bucks, it does do a good job of showcasing some stuff on the Joycon. I was pretty impressed.

Ralizah

@BLP_Software Maybe those games aren't a good showcase for it? It definitely feels a little more involved than normal rumble in Fast RMX, but nothing significant enough to merit attention, imo.

@rallydefault I haven't. It's probably the only thing I'm really curious to try in that game.

This really does highlight how stupid it was for Nintendo not to make 1, 2, Switch a pack-in title.

@Operative2-0 Maybe it's a controller issue? I've only played with the joycons so far.

@Ralizah The demo for Puyo Puyo Tetris isn't the best showcase. The only thing it does with it is different intensities. When playing Tetris, it has a higher intensity when you clear a line than when you put a block down. There's an even higher intensity if you clear multiple lines at once. It showcases the different intensity levels well enough, but it doesn't showcase the rumble being in different parts of the controller (though I haven't tried Puyo Puyo yet, so that may showcase that better than the Tetris).
