The joy cons are so stinkin' tiny! And I don't care what anyone says, you CAN put the Switch in your pocket boy.
The Joycon ARE tiny. I never really thought my hands were especially big or anything, but after a few hours of Zelda with they Joycon in the grip, my hands are definitely cramped. And the L/R buttons - dear lord those things are tiny little slivers of plastic! I REALLY want a Pro Controller.
I have played a few hours in handheld mode, as well, and that pretty much gets rid of the tiny feeling with the Joycon because they are spaced out so much.
I'm still getting used to the sticks, too. They are pretty small in relation to an Xbox controller or even the old Wii U stick on the Gamepad. I'm also getting used to the right stick being so much lower.
I haven't tried the joy-cons yet actually. I was able to snag a Pro controller without pre-order. So I have been navigating my Switch with that. It mainly is sitting in the cradle, and I am not sure I will use the handheld mode much.
I planned to wait for a Switch price drop and/or game bundle but a month or so ago I was able to snag a preorder of BOTW SE...but I decided to resell after seeing what they were going for.
So back to waiting for a price drop, right?
Well, yesterday I went to Best Buy to pick up my preorder of BOTW SE and asked how the midnight release went for the Switch and the guy said they were busy. As I started to walk towards store pickup he said "we have a couple more!"
Against my better judgement I bought one immediately. Well again, I saw what they were selling for...and ended up selling the Switch on Craiglist.
I've got plenty of Wii-U titles to get though so I'll wait for a price drop. At least I got a couple bucks to put towards the Switch when I do get one of my own.
I just couldn't keep it when I knew someone was essentially willing to pay me extra to wait longer.
At least I can say I was a Switch owner for a bit...even if it was only 8 hours.
@KirbyTheVampire In one sentence you say it doesn't make sense to have to use another device for chat, but then a sentence or two later you remark at how smooth it all is...
...the more they bloat the system with other applications, the less smooth it will be.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
So I've had the joy con issue more than a few times. And I'm laying down literally 6 feet away from the console. It wasn't behind my back, or behind a body, or water. The Bluetooth range of the thing is extremely small compared to every other controller.
@scubydo
You're probably all set, then. Theoretically a lot of people can just set this up for their TV, use the pro controller, and never even put it into handheld mode to ever know what the Joycon feel like. I'm going to have it in the dock 99% of the time, but I know it's going to be some time until I can find the Pro Controller in stock, so I'm stuck with the grip for awhile.
On a brighter note, I just put in a couple more hours on Zelda this morning with the grip (after my earlier post on the previous page), and I have to say my second-day report is much better than the first. The Joycon are still small - no getting around that - but you do get used to them. The triggers, though - yea, I don't think I'll ever get used to those haha but the sticks feel better, definitely. Even the placement of the right one.

I know the app definitely won't be smooth if it's necessary to play with friends and stuff, I just mean navigating the UI and stuff is smooth.
There is something strange with the power level of the switch. According to specs, it could technically run at roughly the double clock speed docked compared to undocked. Yet, there are frame drops on the switch in docked mode but not in handheld mode despite the increase in resolution should not demand more than 20-30% if I have calculated correctly.
So either botw runs the same clock speeds at both modes or there is something else going on. Another solution could be it has something like g-sync. If it is the first one, then it would mean other games could utilize the hardware for better performance.
No, but it doesn't really explain anything. They talk about memory issues because of higher level textures, but if that were true, the Wii u would have much lower textures, since it has much slower ram memory.
Managed to get a working replacement to BotW today. It plays, it works, I'm relieved.
However, to be absolutely honest here, I'm already feeling disappointed in the Switch. Parts of the console seem really flimsy and the console, as a portable which is what I'll be using as, feels very cumbersome. My hands fumble when I'm trying to attach and de-attach the Joy-cons, as well when I'm inserting the game cartridge. Furthermore, I still haven't been able to connect to the internet and receive the day 1 update despite having no issues during the set up phase.
@BiasedSonyFan which is my point, they are speculating if the ram bus could be the bottleneck, but since both versions seems to use the same textures and the bus speed is much faster on the switch it seems unlikely.
But Nintendo seems to have taken measures to maintain graphical fidelity and parity across the Wii U and the docked Switch. I don't think you can draw that conclusion based on that observation.
Which still doesn't explain the difference between handheld and docked.
Not sure what to think. BotW runs fine, looks great, all good stuff. Same for FAST RMX, that's gorgeous.
And while I have a Pro Controller...I'm not using it. I'm not using the Joy-Con Grip either. I'm just going freehand and it is so comfortable to me, in part due to my right hand thumb not being able to reach as far as the left.
The screen is awesome. Using the system is easy. And its fast.
Just need more games now. Guess I wont drop it since the actual unit won me over after my mix of emotions at the hands on.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Glad to hear you're keeping it for now @BLP_Software you have some great passion for the gaming world and you're posts are always valid (a lot of that I saw in posts previous to the launch) and I hope that continues.
I do love the Switch, I just miss the Nintendo character in the OS without any music or character (whilst on that point I hope OS Themes get added to it sooner than later) and 1-2-Switch isn't what I hoped it would be. Still, MK and Splatoon to come and I damn hope they announce an Animal Crossing at E3!
