@Operative2-0 no I think I'll still push you on it. Nintendo has been integral to the gaming market for over 30 years. They pioneered lots of concepts that are commonplace in all three consoles and have sold millions of units. They continue to dominate handheld and only one generation ago sold 100 million Wii consoles.

Nintendo is now in their own little space in the market. The people they target are not the same as Sony and Microsoft. To that end Sony and Microsoft don't care what Nintendos doing because it really wouldn't affect them either way

I don't think people understand how console development works.

Nintendo didn't announce the Switch and then all of a sudden Microsoft woke up the next day and had a Scorpio.

These things take years and years of planning and research. To say Sony and Microsoft expedited the complete development and launch of entire consoles to beat the Switch out to market is ridiculous.

@Operative2-0 I'll agree that Nintendo have their own market but every company wants to grow their market share. The Wii U was a failure but still sold 13 million. If Nintendo only targets those 13 million die hard fans then that's the number they will achieve. Nintendo want to sell 100 million (not that I think they will) and those customers need to come from somewhere. Sony and Microsoft are not sitting back with their fingers crossed hoping that lightning doesn't strike twice. This would not be a good business strategy.

@AlexSays Its not a brand new console. It's a mid generation upgraded console.

@Mellor2000 We have a pretty good idea what's inside the Switch, spec sheets leaked a while back and they pretty much confirm our expectations. How that translates into actual performance, we'll see, but somewhere between the Wii U and Xbox One is pretty accurate.

Octane

BigBadJohn

@Octane Granted but still it's not confirmed.

The thing is I can't be described as a Nintendo fanboy (I've been a gamer since the early eighties and my first Nintendo console was the GC) but I always route for the underdog. The next 12 months are going to be very interesting.

@Mellor2000 Several developers have confirmed it. Don't know what you're expecting though, the Switch isn't going to outperform the Xbox One or PS4.

Octane

BigBadJohn

@Octane Probably not. Let's reconvene in 5 years time and continue this discussion.

This. I mean even if we were to entertain the idea that Nintendo somehow forced Sony and MS's hand, it still wouldn't make much sense, considering next to no one even knew the Switch was the Switch until early October, and Pro and Scorpio had been long announced, anyway

Remember the unboxing from the early hours of this morning?

Well the screen has a dead pixel. Look north northeast at the 3:03 mark towards the edge of the screen(directly above the word "cannot"). That's unfortunate and it's always a slight worry. I've snapped a shot below.

Just something for people to be aware of when they buy their Switch. Make sure to check immediately for dead pixels and look to exchange for a perfect product. Perhaps do it in store as the Switch should have a low initial charge on the battery.

Actually, that reminds me that I've been very unfortunate with Nintendo handhelds. My original launch 3DS's cameras would shut off and force me to do a hard reboot when playing the AR games. The Zelda XL for LBW's came with 2 dead pixels. My Triforce 3DS has a piece of dust or dirt stuck under the screen in the center(Though that is more than likely the fact that it's gamestop refurbished rather than a Nintendo problem(.

I hope I'm not as unlucky with the Switch

Which you believe popped up over night all because of Nintendo.

Hope you realize the tech in the Scorpio is not the same as the Xbox One.

Maybe Sony and MS have employed undercover agents who notified them of the Switch beforehand, causing widespread panic amongst their executives.

AlexSays

BigBadJohn

@AlexSays I don't believe that no. It's a conspiracy theory that I made up as a discussion starter. And no one knows what's inside the Scorpio apart from those who are working on it.

A DS Lite I bought new came with 2 pixels right beside each other as well and Smyths refused to exchange it. They told me I'd have to return it directly to Nintendo. They were in the wrong and I shouldn't have let them get away with it. But other than that all my other Nintendo screen products have been pixel perfect. That's at least 5 other screens.

Ya I was gonna say, I saw the dust on the screen in the video, and I'm pretty sure that's just a spec of dust on the screen.

It's still good practice to check your unit once you get it. But I've never had an issue in all the Nintendo handhelds I've bought (total of 9 3DS to date)

@JaxonH If you don't mind me asking, why nine? I understand two or even three, but isn't nine a bit overkill?

Octane

JaxonH

@Octane
It's definitely overkill.

I got a OG turquoise at launch. Wasn't into gaming, just had a passing interest in Nintendo from as a kid, from Metroid Prime and F-Zero on GC and Wii... so I treated myself with a new gadget.

Then the XL came out. Got a black one... 3DS number 2. Years later ended up giving away to a woman on Craigslist who had nothing for her kid at Christmas time, since I had so many.

Then I got the Mario & Luigi one, 3DS number 3. Gave that to a coworker for Christmas a few years later since I had so many.

And of course I got the Zelda XL with Link Between Worlds... 3DS number 4.

As a huge fan of FE Awakening, I ordered the Fire Emblem OG 3DS special edition from eBay. 3DS number 5.

Then the New 3DS models hit. Got a black New 3DS XL at midnight launch with MH4U. 3DS number 6. Also ordered the special edition MH4U New 3DS XL cause like FE, it's one of my all time fave series. 3DS number 7

Then came the FE Fates New 3DS XL. Obviously, had to get it. 3DS number 8.

And then Monster Hunter Generations New 3DS XL. 3DS number 9.

But I wanted the smaller New 3DS, so I got one of those too with tons of faceplates. 3DS number 10.

Oh, and I got the Hyrule Gold XL cause it was so awesome! It's my main 3DS now along with the smaller faceplates model. 3DS number 11.

And during the recent $99 BF sale, I grabbed the black one just to have a backup for years down the line, and since my smaller New 3DS has small scratch mark on screen from closing lid... wanna transfer when the wheels fall off. 3DS number 12.

Forgot about Majoras Mask New 3DS XL, bought cause it was so rare I didn't wanna cancel (tend to follow a "preorder now, can always cancel later" rule). 3DS number 13.

So... I take that back. I've bought 11 3DS to date 12 3DS to date 13 3DS to date 😁
