@gcunit Marketing.

Having an item on display that is noticeable and unique catches the eye, especially with a bold red in the corner and the full art.

3DS cases are rather understated, and a case more appropriate for cartridge size would be...well tiny, and easily overlooked.

People are attracted to whatever appears catching, and having a unique case dimension, with the art handled in this way, regardless of box contents, gets interest.

Ya no prob. It's actually at the 2:54 mark if you're curious. But it's kinda hard to read.

Btw I agree it could be slick marketing. Or maybe he stole one and obviously didn't wanna say as much. Either way, I'm glad we're getting a sneak peak finally since we needed more info.

I like the case sizes though. I think there around the size of PSP cases but half as thick. I think it's more about retail presence then it is efficiency, know what I mean? Kind of reinforces that it's not quite a handheld, like the tiny handheld cases indicate.

@skywake ...But a Switch version of any Wii U/3DS game won't be the same game, it will be a port requiring work, work Nintendo are likely to want to cover by charging the customer. I will be very pleasantly surprised if Nintendo gives us anything more than existing VC purchases for free/nominal payment, though I guess there's a very outside chance that they could create a 3DS emulator to run on Switch, getting around the need to port the games. But there won't be a Wii U emulator on Switch.

Valve doesn't charge extra for Mac/Linux versions of their games. Food for thought.

Anyways, I can see the argument and it makes a lot of sense. I just think it's a bit rough to be asking people to pay full price for the same games when Nintendo can confirm that they already brought them. I'd argue that all of the VC releases are the same game again. I'd also argue that some of the already confirmed indie releases are the same games again. Shovel Knight, Little Inferno and the Human Resource Machine being the main ones. Remakes and remasters get tricky so I can give them a pass on those.

But really, there are only so many times you can own a copy of Super Mario Bros before seeing a pricetag beside it on a Nintendo digital store starts to look like Nintendo flipping the bird. You just know there are some people out there who had it on the NES, SNES, GBC, GBA, Wii VC, Wii U VC, 3DS VC and NES Classic Mini. I can understand if people like that end up flipping a table over if they boot up the Switch on launch and see

Hrm... intentional? Maybe... maybe. If we don't start seeing a small slew of other users over the weekend, then I'm leaning toward this being planned.

@mav-i-am I doubt game shops have the Switch yet. They won't get them until the week it goes on sale.

Where's Jim Sterling? I need to give hima hat for laughing about Nintendo having an account system like this, Even though it was pretty obvious from how the Nintendo Accounts have worked.

You know what, screw it, since I've been right about that, here's another thing. My Nintendo will be the Switch's achievements system. Because it was outlined for the Nintendo Account and Switch.

@BLP_Software Well Fire Emblem Heroes missions were going in the direction of the easier achievements/trophies from 360/XB1/PS3/PS4. Most games had the approach of achievement/trophy unlock for completing each level (where applicable).

But if it's just "the same game" people should be OK with just not buying again, and just keeping the version they have.

Food for thought.

Both sides have a point. Nobody wants to keep rebuying games, but Nintendo shouldn't be expected to perpetually port the same games over and over free of charge.

The solution, I think... an upgrade fee. Nintendo recoups costs, people don't have to pay full price.

Or, people could just keep the 17 versions they already have. I mean, if you have ever that many versions already, why get all hung up over buying it again anyways unless there's legitimate appeal in the new version that's not in the versions they have?

@Grumblevolcano Well, people have it as a must-have to even consider a purchase, but the fact that there are achievements on mobile titles that actually reward you (Hallelujah, its not just bragging rights), and My Nintendo is a part of Nintendo Account which was made for Switch....one plus one is two after all.

Also, the comments section in the Account article, I am amazed many people cant read or comprehend the meaning of words. Nintendo could slap them with it point blank and they'd still not catch on to how it works.

But at the same time, people with physical versions can resell them to cover the cost (at least partially) of the new version if they want. Digital downloads don't have that option.

Anyway, I think that for the VC they may ask for an upgrade fee, but I don't think they'll add retrocompatibility for digital 3DS/Wii U games. They want people to buy MK8 remaster, not give it away for free.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

@BLP_Software I think the issue being made comes more about how it's displayed. If you look at the other consoles, achievements are really in your face. I'm going to use XB1 as an example but there's similar situations for most of these on 360/PS3/PS4 too.

  • When you login your gamerscore is one of the first things you see (it's in the top left corner of the screen).
  • Also on that screen you see how much gamerscore you have out of the total for each recently played game.
  • There's achievement leaderboards each month of which you can compete against your friends to get to the top.
  • The bleep bloop sound when you unlock an achievement that's not rare is extremely iconic.
  • Xbox Live Rewards rewards you for getting achievements, it used to be percentage rebate on all your digital purchases. Now it's mostly badges but also there's sometimes ways to earn reward credits (which get converted into funds for your account) and VIP things like for a fair few years there's been the opportunity to go to E3 with flights, accomodation, tickets, etc. free.

Meanwhile My Nintendo missions are kind of hidden (though we don't know if that'll change for Switch). If you consider everything regarding achievements/trophies, even now the closest Nintendo's got to a system like that would be the challenge walls in some of the games Sakurai has been involved in (e.g. Kid Icarus Uprising, SSBB, SSB4, Kirby Air Ride).

I don't disagree with any of that TBH. Personally I'd be fine with an upgrade fee.

@JaxonH
The issue is that having all your old hardware hooked up isn't something most people do. My old Wii, DS, SNES and GB? They're in boxes. So there is a reason why people will get them again.

@skywake
Oh I understand that. But wanting it all on one device isn't really enough to justify Nintendo continually remaking emulators for new systems and spending resources just so the same people can keep getting free games over and over.

There has to be a compromise. I think the upgrade fee is on point.

Is this any different than how the 3DS and Wii U worked? Your Nintendo Account remembers your purchases, and you were always able to redownload games once you delete them. The question is, if I buy a second Switch, can I connect my NN Account to that and download everything again, either whenever I buy a new device or when my first one breaks and I call Nintendo? Do 3DS and Wii U purchases carry over? I feel these things aren't quite confirmed yet.

The wording kinda sounds like Wii U and 3DS games carry over, but that would be a bit unbelievable for Nintendo's standards. Imagine having all of my VC games on my Switch day one...

@JaxonH If they rip their own ROM files from an unofficial source from the interwebs, then I really wonder how much effort they put into their VC system. Even Microsoft does it for free on the Xbox One with Xbox 360 games. I'm not saying that they're not allowed to charge for the upgrade, but since people already paid €5 for an NES game, you'd think that could also cover the upgrade costs to newer systems. At least, I'm sure they could've covered the Switch emulators with the money they made off the Virtual Console on the Wii U. Assuming there is an upgrade fee, how much would it be? $1 per game seems reasonable I think.

don't count on 3ds and Wii u purchases to carry over. And I doubt you will be able to download purchases on different switches at the same time.
