After nearly 6 years Mario Kart 8 is feeling real outdated and dull. Nintendo needs to seriously pump some new blood into this series and i am not talking about the mobile device Mario Kart Tour. There needs to be a solid entry with plenty of NEW tracks and new characters. If Nintendo would put as much effort into MK9 as they did with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, they could have a KILLER game on their hands. And if they thought MK8 brought people on board with the switch imagine what a system exclusive like MK9 could do, especially closer to Christmas.
Uhh. Mario Kart. Is that game still around? I'm not sure anyone buys that game on purpose.
I'm kidding. I got the Switch just for mk8. Logged 250 hrs. The lack of new Mario Kart and Nintendo's mysterious silence regarding Mario Kart is disappointing. Feels like neglect. To avoid more disappointment, I've been assuming Mk9 is reserved for the next console. But, I'm with you. Me want Mk9.
Super Mario Kart - August 1992
Mario Kart 64 - December 1996
Mario Kart Super Circuit - July 2001
Mario Kart Double Dash - November 2003
Mario Kart DS - November 2005
Mario Kart Wii - April 2008
Mario Kart 7 - December 2011
Mario Kart 8 - May 2014
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - April 2017
Mario Kart Tour - September 2019
There's a general pattern of around 2 and a half years from Super Circuit onwards so the next Mario Kart will likely come in 2022. Which would likely line up with the Switch successor's launch window if the rumours about a Switch Pro existing are false.
@Grumblevolcano I wonder if MK9 is being purposely timed to coincide with Super Mario World theme park somehow. I wouldn't be shocked if it is, or isn't, a factor, but the idea just crossed my mind.
We need a new F-Zero yesterday. Or even 1080, Excite Truck/Bike, Wave Race or a new racing IP. 8 is still consistently in the top selling games charts. Mario Kart 9 should be saved for the Switch successor.
@Bearzilla823 MK8 is still topping the charts, from a business perspective it doesn't make a lot of sense to release a new one when people are still perfectly fine with buying the old one. Why invest in a new game when you can also do nothing and enjoy the same result?
It'll be a while until Nintendo considers developing MK9.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,322 games (as of November 7th, 2024)

Yea, I think it's about time. I've put easily hundreds of hours into 8, especially across Wii U and Switch. One of the most finely tuned games of modern times.
But it's time for the next one. I was always one of the people like, "How could they POSSIBLY get better than 8?"
Years later, that statement is hilarious. 8 is so fantastic, but there is always room to improve or even really spice things up. There was another thread around here with lots of cool, solid ideas being thrown around.
It wouldn't surprise me if Mario Kart 9 is already completed or at least close to completion, and Nintendo are just waiting until MK8D sales slow down before they move in for the kill.
@SkullDragr : It would certainly be a smart use of resources!
It's just dawned on me that the current generation of consoles hasn't had a new Grand Theft Auto instalment, which is crazy when you think about it, but unsurprising when V is still selling lot hotcakes well over 6 years after the fact with no sign of slowing down!
Porygon did nothing wrong.

@SkullDragr I mean, it's been 7 years since the last new installment of GTA; that strategy is certainly working, isn't it? Rockstar are in no hurry to release a new one. Sure, eventually sales will dwindle down, and they have to. But the same applies to Mario Kart; I think they can easily ignore Mario Kart until their next console.
Though I wouldn't mind it if they released an F-Zero in the meantime instead.

I don’t see the point in another Mario Kart on Switch. It would cannibalise 8D’s online community, and stop sales for a game that is a consistent top 10 entry week after week after week (after week). And it would also basically be the same game, but with different tracks.
Better to do a completely different racing game under a different or new IP. Star Fox Racing this Christmas - that’s my guess.
