Topic: TV recommendations for the Switch

Hey,

I am looking for any kind of recommendation to what TV works well with a Switch? I currently have an LG OLED but the super fast response time is killing it for me. No motion blur in 30fps games just looks so jarring and judders.

Am I right in saying that pretty much anything other than an OLED will be suitable? I was looking as getting a cheaper TV, something like a Samsung Crystal UHD just for the Switch.

I have tried all sorts with my OLED, different screen modes(standard, sport, game mode etc) and BFI. Either the BFI flicker kills my eyes and don't really see any difference or other TV screen modes have to high input lag.

Thanks in advance.

Just to note that any 60fps games like Mario Kart 8 work completely fine and play great. It's just anything that's locked at 30 fps. Desperate to play tears of the kingdom and even breath of the wild but it just feels so unplayable. To the point that I am happy to by a new TV just for the Switch.

I bought a 32 QLED 1080p Samsung for my switch. That’s as good as it gets since it’s native resolution.

I'd argue that OLED is probably the best option for gaming. Sure the super fast pixel response times means at lower framerates you get a bit of stutter. Something you don't get on LCDs because the previous frame tends to bleed into the current. I don't notice it personally but, it's a thing. And in any case you're getting this because you have very fast pixel response times.... which is something you want for games....

If it's super annoying for you and you really want to go back to an LCD? I like Sony's TV line up personally. Just take note of whether or not it has HDMI 2.1. Yes, doesn't matter for the Switch but you're probably going to want to connect other stuff to it. And if you have this TV for 5-10 years and are into games? At some point you're going to want to connect something that can do 120Hz/4K with VRR

There are plenty of Switch games that run at 720p and 720p doesn't scale evenly into 1080p. Infact 1080p is kinda crap for scaling generally because most of the resolutions that scale evenly into it aren't really resolutions anyone ever uses. I mean, 540p? 360p? .... A bit of a full list to make it clear what I mean, standard resolutions and standard resolutions that evenly scale into them:

480p: 240p
720p: 240p
1080p: 540p
1440p: 720p, 480p, 240p
4K: 1080p, 720p, 540p, 240p
8K: 4K, 1440p, 1080p, 720p, 540p, 480p, 240p

4K is definitely where it's at, pretty solid coverage of different resolutions without wasting your money by going for 8K. The only thing it kinda misses out on in terms of clean scaling is 480p but modern TVs in general are pretty crap when it comes to displaying SD content. 1080p sets included.

And even there, the 4K set has more pixels to play with so the wonky-ness isn't quite as bad. 480p pixels at 1080p are 2.25 pixel squares, so every pixel is 2 pixels high with every 4th being 3 high or 50% higher. At 4K they're 4.5 pixel squares so 4 pixels with every second pixel being 5 high or 25% higher. Less obvious

I have a 65" QLED and Switch games look terrible on it, Zelda especially looks like someone has smeared vaseline all over the screen and there is also noticeable latency.
It's probably made worse because I also play the real consoles on the same TV, so the downgrades are really noticeable when playing the little handheld docked.

@Fox-McCloud I've been wanting a 40-43" tv that's decent for gaming and have had to adjust how much I'm willing to spend. The Sony X85K may be the most affordable 43" tv that delivers decent game performace (has decent brightness, low lag, doesn't suffer from motion blur (aka slow pixel response time). X85K is $500-600 USD. Mind you, I want the tv I buy to be able to handle a ps5 or series X if I ever get a more powerful console in the future. The only reason I haven't bought the x85k is because I'm not in a rush to buy, and I'm watching 2023 tv models coming out, since newer tv's seem to have better brightness than 2020-2022 tv's.

If you look for reviews or lists for good budget gaming tv's, those tv models usually aren't available smaller than 50". It seems the tv market assumes you'll buy a monitor instead, if you want 43" or smaller - which is bs, I think. I don't want or need a bigger tv for this situation. If you do look at monitors, make sure they have speakers, since not all monitors have sounds. (Forgive my use of "budget tv". It seems anything under $1000 in the US is usually called budget tv price range. And pardon my US dollars. I assume prices in Pounds are about 100 less than USD)

If anyone want's to correct me, or point out a decent 40"- 43" gaming tv for less money than a Sony X85K, by all means chime in.

(I've used rtings.com to see tv stats for peak brightness, pixel response time(motion blur), and input lag, etc.)

Really unsure what to do, have been thinking of maybe buying a decent television and just using that for my PS4.

Then buying a Gaming Monitor and hooking the switch up to that, not sure what to look for on both though.

My television is a good 7-9 years old now, picture still good for it's age but the controller you really have to press down on the buttons to get it to work. I did think about just buying a new controller or a universal one but really want a new television.

Any suggestions.....do most people play the switch on the television or a gaming monitor?
