@Slitth i think it's time for the game community to stop acting like their old hardware becomes obsolete when something new comes out.
There are extra development costs to put a game on multiple platforms and you want a freebie. I mean freebies are great. If companies decide to give out freebies, then awesome.. but if they don't, people need to stop acting like they are getting screwed over. You know what you're paying for when you buy a game. If you bought a game on WiiU, you never expected more than what you payed for - a game on WiiU.. now that a new system is out, don't act like you're getting ripped off.
@Inertiacreep
If Nintendo already have made it for multiple platforms, then there is no real extra cost.
All that is need its a shared database that show what rights each account have.
And such service is not a freebie because I must own a digital copy of Zelda on the Wii U and buy a Switch to have get this service.
After all I do not have the option to sell by digital copy of the Wii U Zelda and buy a copy for the Switch.
I would have this option if I had chosen a physical copy instead.
And it this kind of small things that make people wait.
Will the next Switch have compatibility with the old one's physical and digital games?
And the answer is. Only if Nintendo is nice.
As it is right now the Switch is a new enough system to ignore such worries for now.
But in a years time there question of waiting and seeing what the new one can do become very relevant.
The Switch would be a great buy if you hadn't said its your first Nintendo console since the gameboy. I would defo suggest getting the 2DS/3DS as an entry way console to figure out if you would enjoy the Switch, if you like 3DS games you will more than likely enjoy the Switch.
The switch isn't cheap, the games are super expensive, and you have never owned a Nintendo product outside of the gameboy so you dont really know how you'd feel about their IP's. best way to find out is to get a 2DS (imo 3DS is a gimmick), or 3DS and find out what you think, they come in cheap, have over 1000 games and is still got another year of support left, meaning its eShop will probably be around well into 2020
@Slitth yes dude, it significantly increases required development time and man power.. you think they just push a button and pow! now it runs on 2 systems instead of one? So yea, all the extra time and work it takes them, but you want it for free?
@Inertiacreep Of course it take time and money to make the game run on different systems.
But Nintendo decided to make a Wii U and Switch version of Zelda.
Now when I get a copy of it on the Wii U, there is little sense for me by get it again on the Switch.
Because as you said the old console still works fine.
So there is less incentive for me to get a Switch.
Sure there are other game that might make me get a Switch.
But as long as Nintendo release the games I want on the Wii U why should I.
Nintendo could have saved some money by just dropping the Wii U and only focus on the Switch.
Leaving me with a stronger incentive for me to get a Switch.
Now one of the reason I do not buy new consoles that often is that I never know what I gonna get and I am always stating from scratch.
The money I use on a new consoles could have gotten me games on the PC or older consoles.
That being said, the Switch as it is right now is a good purchase and I would recommend it over the other consoles that are on the market right now.
@Slitth I have some of the same feelings as you. However, I do not think that BoTW being Switch-exclusive would have made me feel any better. In fact, it would have made me mad. BoTW is, by default, a Wii U game. That is the system it was originally developed for, and it was clearly advertised for the Wii U from the beginning as well.
I'm glad that Nintendo made it a dual release instead of just putting it on the Switch. That's the one case in this early console change that I find that Nintendo tried to treat Wii U owners fairly.
My feelings are different with Mario Kart 8. With Breath of the Wild, I spent my money knowing that I could have bought it for Switch instead, I have little to no frustration that I would have to pay $60 again to get it on the Switch - it was my decision, the decision was clearly presented to me. With Mario Kart 8, I bought it and all of its DLC not realizing that it would be re-released full price on a much more popular system a few years later, and that there would be people I would really want to play with but can't, because $60 is wayyy too much to spend on a game I already own.
Even still, I don't expect Nintendo to hand over Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for free. It is not a direct port of Mario Kart 8 to the Switch. It has new characters, an added battle mode, and some other adjustments. My wish is that I could have gotten some level of discount if I wanted to purchase it in addition to the Mario Kart 8 I already own.
@Slitth
That's... really unreasonable currently. When we move solidly into a "no more console generation" phase, then sure, but ugh. What a dark time that will be. If you think DLC and microtransactions are bad now, just wait for when companies need to find some other way to make money without new consoles and ports to said consoles. It's gonna be insane.
I do most of my gaming on PC, and though there are gems out there that buck the trend, it's a massive landscape littered with microtransactions and founders bundles and insane amounts of dlc (what's the latest count on dlc for Crusader Kings II? It's gotta be like 10+ ranging from 5 bucks to 20 bucks a pop).
@Slitth whoa dude are you seriously up in arms about buying a switch? that is so petty. this is the best console since super nintendo came out... yo you are missing out on xenoblade chronicles 2! and octopath traveler this year which seriously has potential to be the best RPG since FF6! PLUS shin megami tensei 5 coming out! AND! pokemon which is likely going to be held to very high standards by nintendo! joy cons are literally the best controllers ever made and the opportunities for hd rumble bring gaming to a whole new level in a way that we havent seen since the revolutionary N64 rumble pack!
you want to miss out on a special age of gaming that is nintendo switch, go ahead. we never used to get free games when a new console game out.. idk where you come out with this new age sh* that since they have technology they should start giving you it free... then you talk about the end of consoles like this is a new birth right here dude. consoles are have always been important to gaming. the cornerstone. and as long as brilliant systems like this come out console gaming will continue but here you are talking about you dont want to buy it because you want to play free games on it. wth is that....
@rallydefault
There will always be console generations, because a console is just a "simple" computer with a fixed setup.
This is one of the big strengths of consoles. Its plug and play.
Nintendo could just make a OS if they want it and install it on a mini PC or tablet with requested amount of power. Which is some they are actually doing now.
Now DLC and microtransactions have be in gaming for a long time.
We simply use to call the expansion packs or sequel instead.
The problem is just that some gaming companies are going a bit overboard with this.
And we the community can stop them but simply not buying the games.
Now the only ting I hope to see from Nintendo is move to fully digital copies and reasonable backwards compatibility as far as digital copies are considered.
@Inertiacreep
Yes, I chose to not by a Switch because I am disappointed with the lag of compatibility of the digital content.
This is the best way any consumer can express themselves, by buying or not buying.
Despite this I would still recommend that people buy the Switch.
It a good console, its had a good and stable release and it look they it will keep going strong.
@Slitth well everyone has their own reasons for choosing not to buy consoles. I hadn't bought one since PS2 because even though i always loved console gaming and PC gaming, PC just started to dominate for me and i didn't see enough appeal to buy another console after PS2.
All i can say is that anybody who has an interest in console gaming, the switch is not to be missed. Like whatever you think back on what you think was the best console releases, SNES, PlayStation, etc.. missing the switch would be like missing that.
