Topic: Time to buy the switch?

Hey guys,

I’m finally thinking about pulling the trigger and buying the switch.

Is this a good time? Or is Nintendo possibly coming out with a newer version soon and I should hold up?

Thanks

Bladepro

Dude, it‘s not even a year old. If you want one, buy this version and not wait for a newer version that may or may not come in a few years.

I’ve never owned a nintendo device other than the gameboy when I was little haha. So I don’t know how often Nintendo updates their devices and that’s why I ask. @GoldenGamer88

Now is basically the perfect time to buy a Switch. You've got all the great games of 2017 to play and some fantastic titles coming in 2018 and beyond.
I don't think you should be worried that Nintendo will release a new version of the Switch any time soon. Nintendo does have a tendency to release new versions of their handhelds pretty frequently--just look at the many different types of 3DS and 2DS models--but with the current Switch model selling so well as it is, they don't have any incentive to make a new one anytime soon. Additionally, the Switch hasn't even finished its first full year yet. Releasing a new version so soon would probably do them more harm than good in terms of sales. Even if they do release a new Switch eventually, I couldn't see them doing until mid-2019 at the earliest.
So, in short: buy a Switch, as soon as you can!

Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.

Well, if they ever update it, it‘s typically two or three years after launch, so 2019 or 2020. The only outlier is the 3DS, which received its XL upgrade a year after launch, but that‘s mostly due to its poor initial launch, which is quite the opposite for Switch. And if you‘re waiting for a tech upgrade in the wake of New 3DS or even PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, this may be even further down the line.

If you wanna make sure, you could wait for the heavily rumored Nintendo Direct on January 11 in case anything‘s announced there, though, I doubt it.

Nintendo doesn't usually update their devices like other companies do, and in most cases, any upgrades are relatively insignificant. Even the "New Nintendo 3DS", which is basically a slightly upgraded 3DS, isn't worth the upgrade as the vast majority of developers (including Nintendo themselves) ignored the extra power of the "New" model, so only a very small number of games take advantage of the added strengths of the hardware, and you can count the number of retail "New 3DS" exclusive games with one hand.

So now is as good a time as any to grab a Switch IMO. I think you would have been able to grab a better deal during the Christmas season though.

Porygon did nothing wrong.

Updated consoles only get made when better tech or to be more accurate cheaper tech comes out. New parts eventually come out that perform the same as the old ones, but are cheaper to make. When that happens a console can be redesigned to use these new pieces of hardware and also act as a new design. The redesign isn't usually any more powerful, but can be FAR cheaper to produce.
So, if they come out with a cheaper version of the GPU or CPU or heck even if ram prices take a nose dive you would then see a redesign.
In the Switch's case the GPU is a propriatary Tegra X1 (An X1 nintendo custom built for their system which is the norm for consoles). The X1 is currently the only model of its line and thus no update would be available. Its CPU is custom built around the X1, so if the GPU dosen't get updated not much reason to fix it. Ram prices are still stable and while an upgrade from 4GB to at least 8GB would be nice for the system that would make the Switch MORE expensive to produce right now.

Bottom Line. Unless they are making a Switch "mini" or "XL" and just change the size of the screen, which would honestly require a redesign of the entire motherboard (for a mini) or somehow pull a little more processing power for a bigger screen (XL), the switch is where it will be for the next few years at least.

Edit: The battery could also be another point of an update, but that would also be just as likely be released as an aftermarket upgrade.

@Bladepro
What are you waiting for ?
Buy Nintendo Switch ASAP and make your day with Nintendo Switch !

No good deed
Will I do
AGAIN...!!!

If you think there's enough games, buy it. If not, consider waiting.

Nintendo rarely makes redesigns for their home consoles, and if they do they are not a necessity. Like the Wii Mini (I think that's what it was called) was actually a downgrade from the Wii.

With that said, Nintendo could treat the Switch entirely differently because it's partially handheld and Nintendo loves rehashing their handhelds. But as for me, I haven't seen a redesign worth purchasing since the GBA SP. The original DS and 3DS always worked just fine for me.

Purchasing the Switch should be based solely on the games. If there are enough games on the system then it will be a good buy. If there is not, then wait.

SMEXIZELDAMAN

Nah, not enough good games. Stick with the 3DS. That system is Fire!

Nintendo Switch is well worth it from the strong support, even for a console less than a year old already in comparison to Wii U. I am sure even if an upgrade would come out it won't be till 2-3 years away.

Though the console s not hacked yet to play ROMS, as Nintendolife are big fans of here.

Nintendo is likely to update the Switch at some point, but probably not any time soon. It hasn't even been on the market for a full year yet. There are many solid games on it already, plus years of future releases to come, I would highly suggest buying the system.

@Bladepro It's a resounding "YES!!!" It's really, arguably. the best idea any console manufacturing company has come up with. I hadn't owned a system since the gameboy advanced era and this got me back into it. It's such a great device! I take it on my commute everyday. And Nintendo has nailed it with their first party games! Mario Odyssey is my favorite game of last year, hands down! Pull that trig!

@Bladepro As others have said, buy it. I don't expect a worthwhile revision (i.e. a Switch with better processing power or any other improvements, instead of a cheaper smaller version with less features) to come until holiday 2020, so you should buy now. The only reason to wait is to look for good discounts/deals, but I have never seen any so far so it's anyone's guess when retailers will start discounting/bundling games with the system.

I am personally waiting for Nintendo to allow game that I have bought digitally on the Wii U to be fee downloads on the Switch.
Given the games would have to be available on the Switch of course.

For example, I do not see why I should be force to by a new digital copy of Zelda: BOTW just because I original purchased it on the Wii U

Inertiacreep

@Slitth no one is forcing you. Play Zelda on WiiU.. you own a console, not a PC.

I own multiple consoles and a PC.

just think that it is time for the game community request that digital content that licensed to an account can be used on all devices that can run the digital content and use the same account login system.
