Topic: Tablet vs Switch?

I recently got an iPad. Are some games actually better suited for a tablet than the Switch? Don’t get me wrong, all things considered, I take the Switch version more often than not, even at a higher price. But I am considering getting Book of Demons on sale now and it is 50 percent off. From the description of the game, it seems that it might actually play better on a tablet. To boot, it is only $5 on mobile and it’s $12 on Switch, $24 normally. Do you have games that you actually prefer to play on phone vs Switch?

Games that have a nice original touch on the iPad I like to go back to every now and then, but for the most part, I’d rather pay the 99 cents on the switch and get it for free than risk seeing an add every 2 minutes.

I've always preferred playing games on consoles/PC way over mobile devices, since I have an actual controller to work with, there's a lot more games I'd be into, there's not as much microtransactions as there are on mobile (from my experience, anyway), and I won't have to deal with ads, like what @Apportal brought up. Sure, some games work quite well on mobile, but the vast majority of mobile games just aren't my thing.

@rockodoodle
I will never want to play tablet games.
I will not support the mobile gaming that really represent Chinese people's habit despite i am half Indonesian Chinese people.
I definitely support Consoles / handhelds, the products made by Japanese companies. They are the real things to play video games.

Yeah, I haven't made a habit of playing games on the tablet, and certainly none with ads. But I would think that card games and certain other games might play better on a tablet. Maybe I will get the Switch version for Book of Demons

Funnily enough, I recently started venturing into mobile gaming again after swearing off it for years. Looking after a newborn baby sometimes leaves you holding a sleeping baby in one hand, too afraid to move in case you wake her up!

I probably shouldn’t have gone for F2P to start with but actually quite enjoying Crossy Road, basically a modern Frogger. The constant nudges to pay or watch an ad in exchange for currency is annoying though.

Simple, non-F2P I could recommend are the Rayman autorunners (I think they’re Jungle Run and Fiesta Run?) since I think they’re exclusive to mobile and play great. I personally enjoyed The World Ends With You but I know a lot of people dislike the simplified battles for touchscreen.

When I got Stardew Valley for the iPad, it completely replaced the Switch version.

I wasn't even trying, but before I knew it, my iPad file was three in-game years older than the one on the Switch.

As of now, I just have a Nintendo franchises and a Hearthstone. The only ones I have played are Dr. Mario Mario Kart and Mario Run. I went ahead and sprung for Mario run. I have not paid for anything else. Mario Run is pretty cool. Yeah, it’s overpriced, but it’s just kinda cool to see Nintendo on a different platform in this capacity. I think I would enjoy Rayman bc I loved Legends, so I need to give that a look.

I am considering Apple Arcade. It’s just $5 a month and some of the games look cool. What the Golf has been on it for a while.

Some of the Square Enix ports, though expensive in mobile terms, are pretty good. You can play Dragon Quest I-VI and VIII one-handed - and DQVIII is still a fantastic game by today’s standards. As stated above, The World Ends With You is an incredible game - and it has the best touchscreen controls I’ve come across.

Visual novels are also great on a tablet. Danganronpa released just in the last month, and then you’ve got a bunch of Phoenix Wright titles, Ghost Trick, Professor Layton, not to mention Steins;Gate.

Adventure games also work well, such as Thimbleweed Park, Oxenfree and Grim Fandango. And, if you’ve got a big enough screen, old CRPGs are also pretty good, like Planescape Torment.

As for whether any of these games are better on a tablet than Switch, that’s down to personal taste. You’ll likely have a bigger screen and almost certainly a lighter device with an iPad, though, which certainly has its advantages. And then there’s the fact that the software is usually much cheaper on the AppStore.

@Krull, thanx. I will keep those in mind. I am pretty sure that tablet gaming will alway be mostly a side mission for me. But there might be times when carrying my switch might not be that convenient or it’s charging and I don’t want to be tethered. Or maybe just try something new and unavailable on Switch.

@rockodoodle how i would sum it up is this: if you feel comfortable playing on the tablet rather than the controller layout of the switch then go for it.

Controller for sure most of the time. But as Krull mentions there are certain games a tablet might work as good or even better for some games.

Mobile games have limits while a console Switch is a dedicated gaming only. So let's not get trolled into these unrelated comparison. Mobile isn't a gaming devices let's get this fact official.

I totally agree. I just think there are certain cases where a tablet is suitable.

Dedicated gaming isn't one of them....
1. Cooling when push comes to shove
2. Cost break your Ipad/Tablet and spend upwards of $600 or more to replace
3. Lack of Dedicate game Software developer whom wants to make more money and tablets can't handle the power requirements.

Break this enough and you will see where it will go.

It is frustrating that you can play multiple GTA titles on the iPad, as well as Final Fantasy 1-6 and all the older Dragon Quest games.
But non of that came over to Switch so far.
Sega even had Jet Set Radio on the iPhone for some time.

But to answer your question, I think all the card games make more sense on mobile for me personally.

I personally don't find the vast majority of games suited for mobile at all. Heck, I play a couple mobile online games with friends and use an emulator* to play on my laptop rather than have to use my phone. Touch controls all mapped to either kb/m or XB1 controller.
The only games I'll actually play on my phone are card-type solitaire games, when I have to kill a few mins. Games like Pokemon Go are obviously suited for it, but I don't play anything like that myself.

*Games are legit purchased. Just pointing this out coz some people auto-associate 'emulator' with 'piracy'.

@Yanina : I enjoyed Liberty City Stories quite a lot, but I haven't played it since the Switch launched.

I would love to see Bully on Switch as well, and if they ever do bring it over, they absolutely must bring back motion controls from the Wii version as well. After having played the amazing Wii version, I cannot fathom how the game could possibly be as much fun to play on any other platform.

I would definitely double-dip in a heartbeat if it came to Switch. III/Vice City/San Andreas/Liberty City Stories/Vice City Stories on a single cartridge would be absolutely incredible. They could all fit on a 16GB cartridge. It would likely carry a high price tag due to music licensing and what not, but I doubt the majority would be dissuaded by how much value there would be in such a package.

@rockodoodle There's no game I'd rather play on a tablet over a Switch. I tolerate touch screens because they are the standard these days. But give me traditional controls as an option and I would always pick them.
