The Wii U is literally 2 consoles in 1 (Wii U and Wii). It's like there's two pieces of hardware in one console: The Wii U hardware and the Wii hardware. There is zero emulation involved.

The Wii U is even 3 consoles in 1 (if you modify it) since the Wii mode is able to play Gamecube discs just like the original Wii.

If we want to be pedantic technically the GC, Wii and Wii U had very similar architectures. There wasn't a Wii inside the Wii U or a GC inside the Wii, those compatibility modes were the same CPU/GPU just at different clock speeds. Where they separated the hardware was in terms of storage.

When a Wii booted into GC mode it walled off the 512MB of NAND in the Wii as well as underclocking the CPU/GPU. As far as the game disc was concerned it was a Gamecube at that point. Same thing with Wii mode on the Wii U but instead with the 8 or 32GB of NAND, Wii Mode on the Wii U had its own 512MB of NAND.

Was kind of a unique series of consoles in terms of that being possible. I struggle to think of any consoles that were that similar architecturally outside of this current generation we're in. GB -> GBC arguably was similar. But definitely PS4/PS4Pro/PS5 and XBOne/XBoxSeries are similar to that.

In terms of digital Switch purchases carrying over? Honestly I see no reason for Nintendo to dramatically change architectures which would be the only technical reason for them to be forced to drop combability like they did with Wii U/3DS -> Switch. Also the "Nintendo wants to sell games again at full price" argument kinda falls flat a bit IMO. I mean think of Skyward Sword, sure they're selling it again now on Switch but imagine if the Wii U had Skyward Sword HD at launch..... swings and roundabouts

With that said, with the OLED model I'm not holding my breath on Nintendo doing sensible things. At this point if they abandoned the Switch library entirely in 2 years I wouldn't be shocked. It'd be an extremely dumb move IMO but I guess that doesn't really matter

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

I wonder if they would try to tie in backward compatibility support with Nintendo Switch Online membership? They're kinda half way there already with the NES & SNES online libraries.
