If your original cable won't charge Switch directly, I'd talk to Nintendo.... If it's not covered due to how long you had it, the advice is definitely get an approved charger
Only use Nintendo and Nintendo licensed chargers @boyd88. And DO NOT use your Iphone charger or any other devices charger. Your Iphone and other devices chargers are a different amperage & voltage and can 100% destroy your battery and the Switch it self. Only use Nintendo and Nintendo licenced chargers. Other chargers are the wrong amperage & voltage.
I live in the U.S @boyd88 so don't really know any retailers in the U.K but a google search for (Nintendo Switch Charger) should be a good place to start. Otherwise only places i can think of would be Walmart and UK Ebay & Amazon.
Well, the same cable you use with your dock can also plug directly into the Switch, @boyd88 ... Having no TV, I play exclusively in handheld mode, so I certainly don't use the dock
Pretty sure any USB-C will be able to charge the console, although not as quickly as the one that comes with the system. I have used the USB-C cables that comes bundled with the Pro controllers to charge my Switch sometimes. It works, but it's super slow.
@boyd88 The Switch uses a USB-C plug, your iPhone does not and if you try to plug the iPhone cable in you could damage the port. The best choice is to use a Nintendo cable. The pro controllers and Joycon charging grips come with them. Or you can buy a dedicated Nintendo made charger online. If you only have the USB version of the cables, any USB to wall outlet adapter should work just fine so long as you are using the Nintendo cable.
Stay away from really cheap 3rd party cables, they will work poorly or could even damage your console. But also stay away from "fast charge" cables too! Those cables push more power into the Switch than it is designed to take and will fry your console.
Also, if you are travelling and not bringing your dock, you can simply unplug the AC adapter from the dock and use that. It is a Switch charger and can plug right into the Switch.

@NorseGamerTommy that likely has to do with whatever you plugged the USB cable into. If you have a good USB to wall outlet adapter, the pro-controller cables work very well. But if you try to charge the Switch by plugging it into a PC or something like that, it will go much slower.

@NorseGamerTommy Those vary in quality. I have a like 3 of them, one doesn't work at all, one works "okay" and one that was actually marketed for the Switch works as well as... well as well as it should work.
