Topic: Stuck analogue stick on a lite

Hi. The right analogue stick on my lite is permanently stuck going forward (it physically looks fine but the menu screen and all the games are acting as though it’s been pushed up). I’ve replaced the analogue with 2 separate analogues and the problem remains. Any other ideas? P.s. apologies if this is in the wrong thread.

@JoeP87 my bro, you got drift.

@JoeP87 "Joycon drift": a known issue with controllers. It's like phantom input on the sticks (usually with well used controllers. My pro controllers left sticks got drift at around 300+ hours of play). Nintendolife and other youtubers have videos about joycon drift, if you want to see the details.

If you go into Switch settings/Controllers & Sensors, there's an option to calibrate the sticks. It can help with drift (not a permanent solution, though). Give that a try.

Nintendo will repair/replace the the sticks for free. Granted, sending the console in for repair isn't ideal.

Hope this helps?

I get that I’ve got drift. Like I say I’ve replaced the analogue stick with a brand new one (twice) and it’s still doing the exact same thing.

Apart from replacing the stick is there another way of correcting it?

@JoeP87 Other than using the cablibration mode for the sticks in switch settings/controllers & sensors, I don't know. Since I joined here in 2017, I wouldn't say this is a great place to ask. I've watched tech questions since I joined, and the rare times I've seen anyone discuss replacing the sticks (I can count them on one hand), I've never seen anyone say that the stick continues to have phantom/drift-like input. If you've recalibrated the stick, and you're still stuck, I'm not sure anyone in here will have an answer for your scenario. I say that because, only myself and maybe a couple other people ever answer tech questions in here. Repair knowledge in here is typically low to none, surprisingly.

I’ve tried the calibration but it won’t let me. The first instruction is to move right and the stick won’t deviate from facing forward.

I had that happen to my right side stuck on my switch lite after about a year of heavy use. As stated by someone else you have joycon drift. The only three options you have are if it's under warranty either through Nintendo or a retailer (Walmart or GameStop) send it to be fixed or replace it through warranty, if there is an electronics repair shop near you it might be possible to get it repaired ( which would void your warranty), and the final option is to buy a new switch unit.

Sadly from what I've read and been told by four different GameStop and Walmart employees that I've talked to about this issue in the past, the switch lite is well known for developing joycon drift in particular the right stick. I know someone would say the employee was just trying to get me to buy the more expensive versions of the switch, but at the time I talked to those people (peak COVID) those stores only had switch lites in stock.

@AppleroseGrace You missed a detail in the original post. Their phantom input remains after replacing the stick...... twice. On top of that, the system wont let them perform stick calibration.

@WoomyNNYes true, but I near the time I gave up and trashed the lite, I had to hold the right joycon stick hard left upon startup to navigate the menus to attempt calibration. Which worked for a week or so then had no further effect.

It's unlikely (but not impossible) you'd have 3 sticks with the same fault, and it's unusual (but again, not impossible) to have drift on a new stick. It's possible you've not seated the ribbon cable correctly in the connector or might not be drift at all and an issue with the connector/board in the light.

Does the direction on the calibration screen show full forward rather than just slightly forward? All of the drifting I've experienced is a slight drift off-centre rather than fully in a single direction.

You could try swapping the left stick for the one you think is faulty and see if that works - would rule out faulty sticks at least.

What about testing another pair of joycons? If the problem still persists, then you could rule out the joycons.

I don't know if it will help in any way, especially if your problem is hardware failure related, but I did want to let you know there is a way to initialize the console without deleting your save data, screenshots.(I don't know if that includes video clips). Be sure to read the details, though, because the support page directions mention that you'll have to redownload your games. I don't recall if there's anything else you need to worry about.
