Topic: Sony's PS5 presentation confirmed my decision.

Sony is married to Hollywood. Their presentation, business know-how, output, and target audience all have that in common. It's very very tied to film format production, and tied to marketing to an audience based on film format advertising, and appealing to an audience largely tied to film watchers. Which is a lot of people.

And this makes sense. Film & music is what Sony does (I'd argue their electronics have always been overpriced and range from terrible to pretty good but overpriced). Film & music have always been their core businesses, and it's sensible for their gaming to be informed by it.

Nintendo is video games for the sake of video games. Pure gaming, which is why it's so universally appealing to "core" gamers, even those that claim to hate Nintendo (but want Nintendo games on their favorite platform.)

Microsoft....they're unique in this because they so far haven't really tried to put a horse in the race to what their games represent, They've mostly wanted to simply be a platform, like PC itself , that makes it an inviting place for others to put their games on. That's changing a bit, and I do like what I'm seeing there. The studio's they're buying and the types of games they're fostering seem to be connected to what I'd consider the "golden age of PC gaming" which is pure gaming, but a very different type of interactivity than Nintendo games. Interestingly, Switch has picked up a lot of support from that realm as well.

So when we evaluate all 3 systems and what each represents, Nintendo tends to be pure traditional gaming, a bit of PC golden age gaming, too, even stealing a bit of PS1 era gaming thunder in terms of JPRGs and such. Very traditional.

XBox represents PC gaming from the late 90's early 00's, in spirit, and a bit of Sega arcade flourish, and is mostly not about the specific games, but is about the ecosystem for other companies' games (but we'll see how their studio aquisitions change that.)

Sony represents sort of a theater of its interactive cinema type output, where they are probably the best, or one of the best providers of that type of content.

Fortunatley all 3 present something different. Nintendo is, and always will be home for me, it's the core of traditional gaming which is where I come from. Microsoft has become very appealing as a PC replacement (or PC itself if you're doing that) as a fairly generic, neutral platform for all other games that aren't a good fit for Nintendo's light hardware. And Sony, remains very likable for its stable of cinema interactive games that are usually unique in presentation and scale, though I don't find it a terribly likable platform to play other companie's games on these days. If I had to pick just one, it's Nintendo every time. If I had to pick 2....it's a hard call. I don't want to miss the games I like from Sony, and some are very very great.....and yet I prefer MS for playing anything not exclusive as their ecosystem is just more "friendly" than either Nintendo or Sony.

And this coming gen it's all so expensive that it's hard to fully commit to all 3.

What games really resonated with you from their presentation?

Ratchet and Clank, Kena, Deathloop (though I need to see a bit more gameplay) seem really impressive and cool, and at least half of the other games looked solid.

Non-binary, demiguy, making LPs, still alive

I got a dozen ps5 games already that are definite purchases. Can't wait to finally preorder the consoles!

@kkslider5552000 I mean, the good news is you don't need to get a PS5 to get those games, save Ratchet and Clank. Kena and Deathloop are both multiplats (among others).

I think Ratchet and the Horizon sequel will be fun games. Didn't really see anything innovative in terms of gameplay, so that was very disappointing. Graphics are fine, but we've been seeing that kind of fidelity on PC for years, including the ray tracing. But I can see console-only gamers being pretty stoked with some of the lighting. Hopefully they also make big leaps in AI performance.

Though I got my Switch in 2018, the key consideration for me has always been playability. I was gifted an XBONE, and enjoyed it, but I didn't buy any games for it. I just played what came out on GwG. Once I moved, and gave up my TV, I left the XBONE behind.

Some of the PS4 and PS5 single-player exclusives intrigue me, but they're not system purchasers for me. Especially given the no-TV constraint I currently have. If anything, I will invest in a gaming laptop, because of the included and stowable monitor.

@rallydefault I think AI will follow. I'm currently playing The Last of Us Part II, and I have to say, the AI is very impressive. Probably the best AI I've seen in a game. I remember that the AI of the human enemies were quite basic in Horizon. So I hope they improve those, or focus more on the machines. Since one of my gripes was that all the story parts involved combat against human characters, which was a lot less fun than fighting the machines. It seems that they're changing that though, since the humans now use machines, like the war elephants shown in the trailer. So that's promising.

Yea, no system-sellers for me so far. I'm sure they will get some eventually. I'm pretty sure I'll wind up with a PS5 instead of Xbox next gen, but who knows? Maybe Microsoft will suddenly strike gold with some awesome exclusives that aren't Halo or Gears. I think Rare is slowly getting back into its groove. Sea of Thieves has evolved into a pretty spectacular game, so maybe their next effort will be enough to sell an entire system for Microsoft.

@Octane
That's good to hear. I'll get around to Last of Us II before the end of the summer, hopefully. My gaming time on the TV is much reduced with a toddler in the house, so it's pretty much catch an hour when she's napping or an hour when she goes to bed. Takes a loooong time to finish games on my Playstation these days haha Took me a couple months to beat God of War and I only put like 10 hours into it.

The vagueness of the thread's title managed to out-clickbait the actual news articles, which is no easy feat at all.

I'm pleased to witness it was for a good cause, though.

I don't quite have lots o' loot, because I'm from the Boot.

@AlexSora89
? OP was just sharing his decision on PS5 after watching the presentation. What news articles are you talking about? Also this is a forum of personal opinions.....???

(Sorry if I'm misreading your tone. You're coming off as arrogant and sarcastic but maybe you just didn't do a good job typing.)

I guess my title was a little click-baity, but I honestly didn't mean it to be. But yes, it was for a good cause. And if I were to start the thread today, I'd say "Fire Emblem: Three Houses confirmed my decision" because I just started that game and MY GOD I am HOOKED right off the bat.

Heh, nobody seems unduly bothered by it .... I quite like some of the games shown at both Sony's & XBox's events but most of those were multi-platform. especially PC, which is what I'll be sticking with
