They should only do live if they have several huge announcements.

The thing I like with Live shows is the on-stage demos. I don't particularly trust concept trailers because it means it's what they WANT to do rather than what they HAVE done. And at that point there's just no reason for me to get hyped.

Chances are they'll do their usual direct and have the live demos be afterwards at the treehouse stream. Which I think would be dumb for exposure, but that's the most likely scenario.

Nintendo is basically this already.

I don't think they should do a live E3 next year. I enjoy watching the trailers but the parts where you are watching a very well paid person in a suit saying how ace their company is, isn't very entertaining. The digital events are fun. Remember kids, it wasn't the format that sucked...it was the announcements O.<.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

But how is a live show any different? I mean the only difference between a live show and a pre-recorded one is that the stage demo can break. Or the presenter can fumble their lines. It's still all fully scripted and they still pick and choose what they want to show and in what light. Usually the entire extent of the hardware unveiling is them just physically holding the thing up before transitioning to a trailer anyways. Then they go into a stage demo and the thing just drags on while we all sit around waiting for another actual announcement. Why not just skip the formality and just show what we've actually stayed up to watch?

If what we're really after are live demos I'd argue that they should keep the two seperate. Have the Nintendo Direct as the main show and put all of the fun and announcements in there. Get us hyped about the first showings of whatever. That's what we stay up to watch. Then demo the stuff through an unscripted competition or post-direct stream. I mean what's wrong with doing this as a replacement for the "stage demo" and having all the rest pre-recorded? If we're worried about them not "being honest" then surely a fully unscripted and demo in the form of a contest or something is far better. I think without question the format they've landed on works better.

@skywake: Some people would watch a live conference rather than watch a digital conference any day. Some are the other way around. It's as simple as that. What are you even arguing? That the people who feel one way shouldn't feel that way?

The biggest draw for a Live event would be the Press and Nintendo should try to get the press on their side. It is sad how often I see press (not Nintendo Life, those guys rock) ignore directs and just get news from second or third hand sources. I think having both a Live Conference and a Direct for a launching system would be best. The Direct can go into more detail while the live conference focuses on the important bits. Direct can handle the new features the OS will support and some longer gameplay demos, while the live conference would have games and new partnerships announced, along with showing real unique gameplay that the new hardware can deliver and how that wouldn't be possible on the Wii U.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I'm stating simply that the Directs work and I don't see how a hardware reveal changes anything. Because the only thing a live show adds is a crowd. It's no more real, it's still as scripted and they often cut to a pre-recorded video to do the explaining anyway. And often it drags on if they don't get it quite right. The Directs are entertaining in their own right, far more than the live shows were. You can't tell me that the puppets, robot chicken, non-specific action figure and Iwata with the Bannanas were all bad. Clearly it works on some level.

And anyways, if we want an "honest" live presentation? Well they've built a format for that also. Contests. Have the public play the game on stage as its own event. Far more honest than any other sort of presentation. So why not both?

I think that's the very definition of an argument there. If I didn't think that people who disagreed with me were wrong then why would I say anything? I'd be on the other side of the argument if that was the case. So yeah, I guess I am saying that you should agree with my point of view rather than your own. And you are doing the same. Argument. That's what's going on here

Nah, I prefer the digital approach.

If I were to attend E3 in person I would want to see a live conference. But that is never happening, so a digital event is a lot more enjoyable for me. Every digital E3 has been more enjoyable than watching Nintendo on the stage. I like that they cut away all the business talk and get straight to the games. Not to mention all the cool collaborations they have done. I absolutely loved the Robot Chicken collab last year, that was brilliant and very enjoyable. The muppets this year was great as well.

Even if you get to go to E3 doesn't get you in to the press conferences. Press are normally invited to the conferece. I have been to E3 for 3 years now and haven't gotten to see a single press conference, in fact I have heard a lot of press skip Nintendo's direct for that reason, they let someone they work with who isn't at E3 watch/report it but that makes the E3 press less interested in Nintendo's news. That is the biggest reason why I think Nintendo should do a press conference for a hardware announcement or release (most likely the announcement, to get people excited and show off the live demos of what the hardware can do)

If new hardware is shown then yes.
If else then no.

I love how they do the directs. Plus more time for gameplay. The Digital Event + Treehouse Live is the best E3 format ever, and they should stick to it.

I love the directs and definitely think they should stick with them for most things....

But I love the feeling of community that comes with watching not only the presentations - but hearing the responses. I'm one of those that thinks a direct just can't compete with that special spark that comes when you feel like you're in the crowd yourself.

Best example for me was the silence that came after Reggie revealed fireworks in Nintendoland. I might even be imagining that, but I honestly felt like there was a collective intake of anticipation before - and then just utter confusion.

Maybe that's just me and maybe I'm misremembering it - but I'll miss moments like that if they don't go back to the floor - for better or worse (man, I thought that conference sucked).

They should focus on having a good E3 next year, live or not.

@skywake: Uhm...I never stated you didn't know what an argument is. I said what you're doing is silly.

So thank you for acknowledging that this is quite silly.

Definitely not. The speakers always seem somewhat nervous, which makes it hard to focus on what they're saying, and just makes me nervous for them. Better for them to make a polished presentation and try to avoid any awkward moments where they try to demonstrate games only to have the game go buggy or the player be incompetent.

kyuubikid213

I like the Digital Events.

Don't get me wrong, conferences are cool and everything, but...if you give me the choice between a dude talking on a stage and a Robot Chicken sketch, I'll take the sketch. Between a dude on a stage and Muppet renditions of our favorite Nintendo execs, I'll take the Muppets.

It's a nice approach and I think it allows for a lot of creativity when they're revealing games.
