According to a new report from Bloomberg, Nintendo will “begin assembly of its new Switch as soon as July and release the upgraded replacement for its four-year-old game console in September or October”. The site further adds that the system is “likely to be priced higher than the $299 original” and “may be announced ahead of the E3 conference starting June 12 to allow publishers to showcase their full range of Switch games at the global event”.
The Switch Lite will remain on the market. However, the standard Switch will eventually be phased out.
Bloomberg’s report follows tweets made by Emily Rogers earlier today, who said that Nintendo announcing new hardware appears to be “imminent” and that it could release in September or October.
That actually isn’t all from Rogers, who also indicated that a new Metroid game will be released this year. There’s been speculation about a new 2D entry planned for the system. MercurySteam, who developed Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS, could be leading development.
I highly doubt this, mainly because there's a literal chip shortage going on, and no one will be able to get the console. Nintendo can't even manage to produce enough normal switches to meet demand.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
When the Pro rumours began, I just couldn't see why they would want to rush into replacing a system that hasn't even peaked yet. However, as the thing seems to have some rather new software tech they they would be nuts to sleep on it. A more mobile phone upgrade model as opposed to a conventional console generation leap was always the best route for Switch.
I'm not only super excited about an upgrade, but E3 just got interesting! And what has Microsoft got planned for it? So many questions. Hurry up and announce it lol!
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
@jump I think the Pro is it. Their business model is more mobile phone than gaming console for Switch I reckon. If we are going to get a refresh every couple of years, folk will be talking about successors forever (No change there, then.lol.)
@GrailUK I mean, the only thing is.. eventually sales would start to drop, and people would want to move onto the next brand new console. The only reason the mobile phone market works is because you use a phone almost every day, and the phones themselves are all-in-one devices.

@VoidofLight We will see after the next 4 years and if it happens again at the 'end of it's life cycle.' Who knows. They might have a brand new concept for a games machine.

@GrailUK A revision is boring, it's time to talk about an actual new console!!!
Forget HD rumble there should be 4k rumble now, a wave of Switch ports for the new console and to unveil it they bring back Reggie to do some kind of cringy meme showcase!!! ;p
@Slowdive I think if this was just about Nintendo exclusives we might not see an announcement now, but if third parties are asking Nintendo to announce, that's more interesting.
@jump They have created a goose that lays golden eggs haha. I'm sure they have an idea for a new games machine (and they are obviously spending a lot researching it!) but Switch looks like it's here to stay (thankfully!)

@Slowdive I think the odd Pokemon situation yesterday has a solution. Perhaps TPC doesn't want to show off any more footage of Legends Arceus with the base Switch because it still runs badly but it runs well with the revision so Nintendo announces the revision along with their E3 plans, then a Pokemon Presents happens next week with all gameplay being shown on the revision. Nintendo then proceeds to only show gameplay of games on the revision.
Probably also means if they have a Direct then it's the usual Tuesday slot like how Microsoft kept their Sunday slot from previous years.
The only reason the mobile phone market works is because you use a phone almost every day, and the phones themselves are all-in-one devices.
What are you even talking about? The "smartphone model" works because it's a stable platform for software development which allows a large library of applications to exist. Frankly it's the only sensible model for a hardware platform and it also happens to be what Windows is.
The question shouldn't be why are console makers moving to a new revision model. The question you should be asking yourself, as a consumer of these products, is why have they been able to get away with NOT having that model. And the answer to that is (or was) rapidly changing architectures and disposable content......
But you've got it backwards. The only reason the console model worked was because games were disposable products and console architectures rapidly changed. Neither of these things are true anymore, at least not to the degree they were in the 90s. More games than ever are a service and we have standardised hardware architectures. So the console model no longer works.
I bet you the Switch Pro will get folders, themes and all the qualify of bife bits that are missing from the current system. 😑 Kind of crappy considering even 3DS had that stuff but feels like something they'd do these days.
