I love the switch (and Flip Grip) for the multitude of Arcade Games available, the added portability is a great feature. I have no real issues paying for the games I want to play (within reason of course) and the Arcade Archives/Neogeo collections are well priced.

I recently downloaded Capcom Arcade, really well done collection, shame they have bundled stuff but hey ho, it’s priced reasonably so no big deal but I probably won’t touch quite a few games.

I’ve given up waiting for Space Invaders... It’s been out for over 12 months now in Japan (I know I can switch regions but I’d rather not, old people and technology and all that). (SI Forever is good for Extreme but it’s the originals I’m after)

I can’t really understand why things take so long to get started, licensing issues could pose part of the issue I suppose but it’s all pretty much available elsewhere. Surely it can’t be that much of a resource hog to port these classics across.

The Arcade Archives collection are pretty basic, no extra polish really, it’s the same selection screen followed by the emulated rom. They churn out a game per week... I know there’s a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t buy but there’s obviously a market... and it doesn’t seem to pose a big problem for Hamster.

The Taoplan games, I have some of the original arcade boards, but my machine is glitchy and I’d prefer to play them on Switch anyway... To be released in 2020... they are on their way... erm... nothing since really. Don’t even know if they are coming to switch...

It seems to me that the big companies can’t see the wood for the trees... even drip feeding us the games/info is enough to keep me interested... I may return to Mame at this rate... :/

@revowp Yeah I do enjoy the retro offerings as well, I've got a bunch of the games released by hamster. I've also picked up the mega drive collection. Wish Nintendo made more of an effort.

I personally wish, companies would release some more light gun shooters. Enjoyed them on the Wii, and I'm surprised by the lack of releases on Switch.

@revowp
Are Arcade type PS2 games considered as Retro now ?

Sounds like someone is impatient lol

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

@Wargoose I think the light gun games is more to do with the type of tv’s we use these days. Think it’s difficult/too costly to produce. Although there are loads I’d love to play again... especially House of the Dead and Virtua Cop (oops, Sega so no chance anyone’s going in the basement to get those).

The Capcom release is great... but kind of like ‘here’s 32 games’ out of nowhere and that seems to be it. What about ... and ... ? Look at the posts on the release page and it’s complaints about missing games that people want. What’s wrong with these companies saying here’s 32... more to follow but maybe a monthly release... (We can’t get blah blah because of this...this... and this but we’ll work on it).

Someone made a grip to turn the console sideways to play retro games... I bought one and it’s a great accessory... hopefully the guy made some serious money from it. People build Pinball Machines out of the switch to play pinball and that’s only being hampered by greedy license holders really.

Every single week Square Enix seem to release a new/rehashed game (I have some and they are great) but they own Taito too so why are they not plundering their back catalogue in the same way. Space Invaders Forever is a joke... where’s the rest of the release... 12 months after Japan is not acceptable. Extreme is an amazing game but currently not enough for me... just add what I want as DLC and I’ll buy it.

I get there’s a bit of a Worldwide issue going on at the moment but forget the polish or just hand it over to Hamster to do the honours...

@Anti-Matter anything is Retro that’s been released in the past. Some great games available for the system... can’t you play them on the newest Playstations tho? Or is that the subscription service? I don’t own a PlayStation anymore so I’m not sure.

How many retro consoles are around? Must be a market for it then... I loved Vandal Hearts on the PS1... but it seems I need to emulate to play nowadays... or plug in my PS1 if I can find it...

Nintendo Online is a great example, they are a bit slow but at least the games appear, mostly.

Granted there are some that will probably never appear for one reason or another and I’ll have to resort to other means to play those if I want to... Viewpoint being a good example...

I have quite a lot Konami's Rhythm games on PS2 and PS1 since i am a huge fan of Rhythm games from Konami.

I have DDR games on PS2 and PS1 (DDR 3rd Mix, 4th Mix, Extra Mix, Konamix, MAX JP, EXTREME JP, MAX 2 USA, EXTREME USA, EXTREME 2 USA), Para Para Paradise PS2, Drummania games on PS2 (1st mix, V2).
Para Para Paradise PS2 was the first game i have with its peripheral to play, play like Arcade version so having their games with their peripheral like i built my own Arcade at home especially during pandemic situation.
I have a plan to expand my Konami's Rhythm games by adding Beatmania IIDX games, Popn' Music games, Keyboardmania and more Drummania games on PS2.

And for DDR, i found a seller in my hometown that can make DDR metal pad by order, takes 2 weeks to make and the price was quite expensive but still cheaper than my New 3DS XL. It just matter of time i have enough budget then i will order DDR Metal pad and i can happily play DDR at home like playing at Arcade.

Oh, i have both PS2 Slim Japan and PS2 Fat USA, two awesome Sony machines to play Konami's Rhythm games at home.

@Anti-Matter Wow. That’s brilliant. I had a few of the cheaper pads which was great, always wanted to buy a more substantial pad but never got round to it. I’ve got one for the Switch, plugs into the GameCube adaptor, to play Necrodancer/Cadence with.

The thing is... most of those games were arcade releases... it wouldn’t be too much to emulate and release on Switch... then ‘some guy/girl’ can make the controller for those that want it. Although I’m sure PowerA or Hori would oblige.

Maybe there isn’t that much of a market for it, but i’m sure it would make at least a small profit. I suppose it comes to licensing issues again, or the fact that the games companies have eyes elsewhere... maybe they don’t really care what we think unless it makes them millions easily.

Nowadays rhythm games in my opinion not as good as 20 years ago. Music choices nowadays are different than during 90's era and early 2000's, the best in my opinion.
We know Toy Box, Aqua, STEPS, Vengaboys, 2 Unlimited, Missing Heart, etc 20 years ago but now we get LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, Arianna Grande, Dua Lipa, Tik Tok, etc. Awful musics in my opinion. The other rhythm games from different game companies such as Deemo, Voez, etc are not even looks interesting for me in term of gameplay and music selection. I have listened to Konami rhythm game musics for 20 years and they are like my new religion and to compare with other rhythm games from different companies, they are still not even surpass my expectation as i set my bar very high, i expect the music qualities must be as good as Konami, my norm.

I knew DDR, Beatmania IIDX, Gitadora, etc from Konami are still exist on latest Arcade but Konami don't want to port them to consoles anymore, instead they ported to mobile with very awkward way to play and a lot of DLC songs than default songs.

And as Konami Rhythm games fan, when i judge the songs quality for latest machines, i felt quite disappointed as the musics quality for DDR A20+ wasn't as good as old DDR. Well, you know... A lot of artists from Konami left due to infamous Konami policy for their workers. And looks like the current artists on Konami started to run out music ideas. Only some of them that i noticed still awesome like 20 years ago such as Sota Fujimori, Takayuki Ishikawa, Yasuhiro Taguchi, Yuiichi Asami, etc.

Oh, i also have DDR on Wii (Hottest Party 3, DDR 2010 and DDR II) but they are the weakest DDR in my opinion. Only DDR II was the best from all but still not as good as DDR on PS2, XBOX and XBOX 360.

@Anti-Matter I fully understand what you mean. However, it’s all a cycle of life... in 20 years time the games you mention that don’t interest you will be someone’s retro... if only games by Deemo, Voez existed today instead of this stuff... etc...

The music industry, although slow to switch over to iTunes, Spotify etc, realised that it’s the way forward. If only game companies could see that having a great downloadable library is the way forward. It might not make them millions quickly but short-sightedness has seen the death of many great companies.

Sitting on all this IP can’t be good for business, if it’s still on sale then even a few pence profit could be worth it in the long run. If companies like Konami, Sega and Taito (plus many, many others) don’t want to invest time and money porting to newer consoles/PC then hand it over to M2/Hamster etc to do the legwork and take a cut of the money.

Donkey Kong (and other Nintendo arcade property) was handled by Hamster and was an instant purchase for me. (I own an original board too).

If these companies don’t see a business opportunity in all this then the only way forward is progressing Mame and the shady practice of obtaining roms. Then it’s left to Konami, Sega etc to spend money pursuing people through courts to reclaim ‘lost’ profits.

It really is so frustrating when I want to create my own little ‘legal’ arcade corner in my house based around a Switch console... I’m willing to wait, just to know that someone is on the case... or why it won’t be possible...
