Topic: Rare Replay: Nintendo's Version?

Lately, Microsoft has been showing some love for Nintendo users. The Nintendo Switch has games that were exclusive to the Xbox One and Windows such as Ori and The Blind Forest, Super Lucky's Tale, and Cuphead. Also, on June 11th, 2019 Banjo-Kazooie was announced as a downloadable fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and released on September 4th, 2019.

What is significant about all of this that Microsoft knows that some users who want their games may own a Nintendo Switch and not an Xbox. Personally, I bought an Xbox One as a way to have a media player that can play video games. Banjo-Kazooie was even a factor to even me buying an Xbox One.

In 2015, Xbox Game Studios (Known as Microsoft Studios at the time) released Rare Replay for the Xbox One. This had a lot of gamers excited because a lot of the Rare classics was once again available. Classics such as Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark were there for nostalgia and newer hits during the Microsoft era such as Viva Pinata. What a lot of users noticed though was how the collection could've been better.

Everyone mostly knows about Rare's history with Nintendo. Rare at one point was one of Nintendo's strongest second-party developer and had a lot of games released for them on the SNES and N64. However, in 2002 Microsoft acquired Rare from Nintendo and Rare became a first-party developer for the Xbox family. That meant that a lot of Rare series are owned by Microsoft and series that were licensed from Nintendo stayed with Nintendo. With the release in 2015 of Rare Replay a lot of users noticed that Microsoft had more of a N64 catalogue on the Xbox than Nintendo did for the Wii U. Some users noticed that some iconic games were missing from the collection like the Donkey Kong Country series, Diddy Kong Racing, and Star Fox Adventure, because Nintendo does own those games and would not want them to be on a competitor's console.

With the love that Microsoft have been giving to the Switch and having Banjo-Kazooie in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there are rumors of a version of Rare Replay coming to the Nintendo Switch. The rumor is that some of the Xbox titles would be replaced by Nintendo's games like the Donkey Kong Country series. Personally I would love to see this come to Switch. This game if it would come would celebrate a part of Nintendo history that is hardly seen now. It is always a memory that Banjo-Kazooie and Conker debuted on a Nintendo console and seeing their games on the Switch would be such a big deal. The internet loved seeing Banjo-Kazooie being in Smash Bros because a lot of fans, including myself never thought that would happen. This can lead to the revival of many series that a lot of people grew up with and maybe having Rare Replay on the Switch would be an opportunity for Microsoft and Nintendo to see if they can work together to bring back some of the beloved series that a lot of people love.

What do y'all think?

@Kirby9714 Since rare replay hasn't come to the Switch, I've mentally grouped it with virtual console as dead. I have no idea what's going on there. If it came I'd buy it. Ive never played Banjo Kazooie.

Would love to see Rare Replay on Switch, but I doubt it'll ever happen.

With the DKC SNES trilogy not on NSO, I think there's still a chance for this. Either that or having Rare games (even the DKC SNES trilogy) on NSO would mean Microsoft get a cut of NSO sales so they never come to Switch.

@Kirby9714 Phil Spencer recently made some statements that suggest they are done working with Nintendo on new projects. He seemed irritated that people kept asking.

So I'm seriously doubtful we will see much, if anything, more from them.

I believe they commented in the past that Nintendo owns those.

Yea, I thought Nintendo owned DKC trilogy.

@Heavyarms55 I can almost guarantee that that was just corporate speak for "We're developing more stuff but its not ready yet." It would make no sense for them to stop now, given the entirety of how Phil has directed Xbox. Phil sees Xbox as an ecosystem, not an individual device. Why else would he have made Play Anywhere? PA in itself is contradictory to the notion that the Xbox isn't an ecosystem, as taking away exclusives takes away console sales and he knows it. Why would he have actively wanted Cuphead, Ori, and New Super Lucky's Tale to come to Switch if he saw the Xbox as a device and not an ecosystem? Why would he have released MS games on Steam if it wasn't an ecosystem? I would be more surprised if there wasn't a port of the Master Chief Collection then if there was, as a port of the collection makes perfect sense. Release the older games on Switch to drive interest for Infinite on the Series X, increasing sales and investment in the ecosystem. I also think that there's a completed build of Rare Replay for the Switch, but Phil wanted the DKC/DKL games and Diddy Kong Racing on both versions, and Nintendo is hesitant. Not completely against it, but very hesitant. Signs of it are seeping through with Wonderful 101 on third party platforms and the lack of DKC on SNES online. If Nintendo was completely against the idea, they would have already put at least 2 on SNES online, but they didn't. The only DKC that they've touched on the switch is Tropical Freeze, and I feel that that's telling of the situation.

@alexybubble I suppose that's reasonable. But at the same time Nintendo is quite different than Steam - they're running on those PCs. Steam is a platform heavily used on PCs running Microsoft Windows OS, In the end, games aren't running on Steam. Nintendo is a much more a rival than Steam.

Both Ori and Cuphead were published by or in association MS but produced by different Studios. It's somewhat different than something like Rare or 343 which are owned by MS outright.

Honestly though, I hope you're right. I'd love to see more MS titles come to Switch. Personally I'd like Rare Replay, Halo 1-3 and Reach and Fable 1 and 2. I just don't think any of those likely.

I doubt Rare/Microsoft are considering this. Sounds more like just someone's dream rather than any evidence being behind it.

@alexybubble I would be very surprised if Master Chief Collection came by normal means, the size is gigantic. It's currently around 100GB on XB1 and the updates coinciding with the remaining PC releases would probably increase it to around 150GB, really doubt that could be reduced in size to suitable for Switch release size. What I could see however is Microsoft releasing an xCloud app on Switch sometime after the full release of xCloud happens (it's currently in beta).

I could see it happening, but I also doubt it. I realize things are starting to get weird in terms of console owners working with and putting games on their own competition's consoles, especially Microsoft, but this is a little different. For all the talk of Ori and Cuphead, those are still largely 3rd party games. Microsoft publishes them and marketed them to some extent, but they're not like Microsoft owned companies or IPs. It's not even a Platinum situation. Rare's games are. And granted, there were Rare games on GBA after Microsoft bought them, but those were mostly games already in development for a handheld that was not competition for the Xbox. I think its likely that the line is drawn at "Microsoft owned IPs and companies putting their games on other consoles". ...except Minecraft, because Minecraft makes all the money, and they want it on everything. Rare Replay would do very well on Nintendo, so I'm not saying its impossible. But Xbox Series X is on its way, does Microsoft want to give competition more games now?

If I'm being honest, the real ideal situation should be for Rare's DK games to end up on every version of Rare Replay, Switch and Xbox (free download or whatever), because it'd be a little unfair for Nintendo fans to receive so much from Microsoft and then have Nintendo put nothing out for Xbox fans. Also because a Rare Collection is not complete without Donkey Kong.

I kinda want it to happen. The first thing nerd related (read: unimportant) thing I remember being really upsetting and disappointing was Microsoft buying Rare. And boy did Microsoft prove Nintendo fans right! Putting Banjo in Smash, a giant love letter to Nintendo and video games where he always would've been if Rare didn't leave for a direct competitor, felt almost like closure after this sad, disappointing thing that happened to one of the best game studios in the world. Rare Replay on Switch would feel roughly the same I feel like.

Would love to play Conker and Perfect Dark on the Switch. Those are in my all-time top 10 games. I doubt it would ever happen though.

I don't think this will happened even though MS posted over Cuphead and Ori, and said that they have a good relationship with Nintendo this is one of the biggest reasons for Nintendo fans to buy an Xbox One. That point right there is reason for them to keep it on a MS system.

Unless I missed something Switch doesn't have a Virtual Console.

Xbox's average user doesn't care about Banjo, Cuphead, Ori and the like. Forza and Halo are their system sellers. I'm sorry to stereotype it as a "dudebro console" but it really is. It'd make the most sense for them to port Banjo to Switch.

Will it happen? Doubtful at this point.

I would like to see a new open world DK from Nintendo, other than Rare Replay of DK. I would also like to see Nintendo and XBOX work on a Banjo game for a multi-plat release. I think a collaboration like that would work out. Banjo: Nuts and Bolts lacked a certain Nintendo charm.

A Rare collection on Switch would become one of the highest-selling games on the console, guaranteed. It would make everyone involved, Rare, Microsoft, and Nintendo, a boatload of money (with Nintendo receiving the smallest portion probably, but still).

A Crash and Spyro Trilogy-caliber brushing up of the Rare games would just be... I mean, holy cow it would be one of the greatest things to happen to gaming in a long time. Toys for Bob did such an excellent job with the Spyro games especially. Just imagining Diddy Kong Racing or Banjo Kazooie spruced up like that. Dang.

At the same time, I don't blame Microsoft for holding onto their property closely when it comes to Rare. They are still a very talented developer even if their recent stuff hasn't been the same caliber as the N64 era. And let's be honest, Microsoft really needs good 1st and 2nd-party stuff in its corner moving into the next generation. Xbox One was largely a flop when it came to exclusives for Microsoft, though there were a couple gems.

There has been rumours of Rare Replay or Halo Trilogy on Switch for ages now. Whereas I can't see it happening, it would be one of the most monumental gaming events in the history of gaming. Microsoft would become an ambassador of gaming! It would be huge. They would be crazy to bring their current games over, but their retro catalogue (and Rare has such history) would bring them nothing but goodwill.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
