Topic: Rain Code for Nintendo Switch

To my surprise there's no thread for Master Detective Files: Rain Code, despite the game looking extremely good.

From the developers of Danganronpa, Rain Code is launching this summer as a Switch exclusive. The devs recently explained in an interview that certain games exclusive to Switch outperform multiplatform releases, such as Triangle Strategy sales dwarfing the multiplatform Diofield Chronicle, despite the latter launching on all platforms. And for that reason, they chose to target Switch first.

The game seems to be more gameplay focused than a mere visual novel, similar to AI Somnium Files and its 3D environments and player controlled character movement.

Special Edition looks nice. Wish I could afford it.

It does.

Artbook, steelbook case and soundtrack, with a nice collector box. Those are all the things I like to see in a CE.

No previews besides the gameplay and trailers already shown.

There's a fair bit of info you can glean from those trailers though. Especially if you've played Danganronpa and have an idea of what to expect (this game looks way higher budget though)

I always kinda doubted this game would be able to run well on Switch but still it sucks to see it actually perform poorly, hopefully it won’t stay a Switch exclusive for long.
In a more positive note, that OST is a straight up banger! As expected from the Danganronpa composer.

I’m wondering if I should cancel my collector’s edition. I wanted it for the ost but otherwise I am not as interested in the rest of the goods. Plus I may be able to buy the ost separately. Gotta decide.

@Hoshiko I don't have much of an eye for that stuff - what performance issues are you seeing?

@gcunit It’s most apparent in one of the very first clips they show, with the main character walking through the city, plenty of stuttering and pop-in by the looks of it.

@Hoshiko I find the editing too quick to be able to draw reliable conclusions, but thanks for clarifying.

I saw a new advert for this on YT, and they got the girl in the game to do a 4th wall description of the game. It was pretty cool.

Game is out this Friday, so we don't have long to wait!

Ya, I just watched the Noisy Pixel review. It does seem to live up to expectations.

@JaxonH Looks like Kodaka hit it out of the park again. It's really cool to have modern, ambitious spiritual successors to both Zero Escape and Danganronpa on the Switch now.

Just hope it sells well enough.

Excitement for this game has been very muted online from what I've seen. Not really sure why? I mean, obviously games of this genre are niche by default, but there are enough Danganronpa fans out there that you'd think there'd be a little more buzz. Especially since, at least imo, this comes across as higher budget than most games of the genre with full 3D models and character control, and doesn't feel like a cheap static image visual novel.

Thats actually why this game appeals to me more than Danganronpa, in the same way AI Somnium Files did. I like the genre but sometimes want a bit more budget to afford 3D character control within 3D environments. I still adored what I played of Danganronpa, but you get what I mean. It helps.

I like that the digital Deluxe version came with separate app downloads for the soundtrack, an art book, and one other thing. I got like 4 Rain Code icons on my Switch menu. About to fire the game up in a sec. Just tried out AEW Fight Forever (its really fun!), Lara Croft Collection (also good! And a fantastic port) and Ghost Trick (also good!). And wrapped up Day 2 in the Pikmin 4 demo (so freaking good- I adore this game so much).

Lot of fun games releasing all at once.

This game rocks!

The sound quality is superb. Like, really really excellent. I'm playing with headphones and can notice all the reverb in an automated announcement, the crisp, clear voices and, btw, the voice work in this game goes hard.

I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy playing right now as it's dawned on me how much I like playing Rain Code.

Did you end up keeping your CE? I think it's a really nice collector item, and now that I'm playing the game I feel an attachment to it. But I'll admit, I mostly want it for the box 😀

@JaxonH I ended up canceling based in NL’s review. I only wanted the OST anyway.
