Nah, Nintendo does unpredictable things, but this would just piss off so many people. They might release a Pikmin game on mobile, but it won't be a main installment, a spin-off title is more likely.

I was hoping for the Wii u to have 2 pikmin installments, just like the gamecube. So maybe my wish will come true. But I wouldn't mind it being released on next gen, I would get that sooner or later anyway.

Nintendo has been extremely clear that they don't want the mobile games to devaluate their IPs, and releasing "Pikmin 4" (as it the title seems to be confirmed by Nintendo to be called) on mobile would not do that?

Furthermore, Miyamoto's own game projects are traditionally for home consoles AFAIK. Hideki Konno is the head of the mobile game development.

Pikmin 1 was released on October 26 in 2001 (in Japan), Pikmin 2 on April 29 in 2004. That's about two and a half years. It's definitely possible. If what Miyamoto said was correct, and the Pikmin team is always working on a new Pikmin game, then 2-3 years is plenty of development time, for sure if they are using Pikmin 3's engine, which is very likely.

I guess that does sound right.

I can see pikmin 4 basically being like metroid prime 1 to 2, where they remain the same gameplay, graphics, engine, etc wise.. but with new areas, objectives, enemies, etc etc etc. yet still be incredibly successful.

Really want to see how this turns out, I'm hyped.

I wonder why miyamoto didn't show us a demo of it during the direct.. if it's that close to completion, and basically on the horizon, it doesn't make much sense for him to keep it a secret like this.

Heck, him simply teasing "it's in development" like he did with pikmin 3 would've spiced up the direct.

Well, this came out of nowhere! I was assuming for a while this was happening, but I thought they might have waited until the NX at this point. Maybe not?

Possibly for the NX......I mean come on now. The reason Pikmin 3 came on Wii U instead on the Wii was because even if they made it on the Wii, it would take three years to make it happen so it was moved to Wii U.

The Pikmin 4 game was "very close to completion" according to Miyamoto in an interview made 2 months ago, so your point is...?

The interview wasn't made two months ago. It was made this month/late last month. Europe lists their dates as day/month/year. So an interview dated as 7/9/2015 is referring to the 7th of September 2015.

Well, the gameplay is bound to remain the same. I might get a little graphical update, but I wouldn't expect much. Just like Pikmin 1 and 2, they reused a lot of models and used the same engine.

Perhaps they wanted to avoid the same thing that happened with Zelda, showing a game with the risk of it getting delayed. But still, despite the fact that it's ''close to completion'', we haven't seen a single screenshot, so I'm expecting at least a Q2 2016 release window.

I think it could be Wii U and 3DS, like they did with the shorts. Perhaps Wii U, 3DS, and NX.

This should most likely be moved to the Wii U thread, since AFAIK all currently available data indicates that this is a Wii U game:

At the same time, we have also prepared a demo version of “Pikmin 3” so anyone who hasn’t played Pikmin can experience its unique joy. Continually launching campaigns after the release of software will lay the groundwork for the next iteration of “Pikmin” in the future. (Miyamoto to the shareholders in October 2014)

I don't understand, why does that suggest that it will be a Wii U game?

If you release a demo for the specific purpose to prepare the audience for a future game release, it does make sense to do it on the platform the game will arrive on?

The demo wasn't released for that purpose, he's just saying that for general campaigns post-launch, and I don't see how that pertains to the game's future platform. Splatoon keeps getting regular updates, as well as a second test demo, but that doesn't mean we're getting another one on Wii U. Sorry, I still don't see the correlation.

Got married.

I never got around to picking up 3...(and it is so expensive now...grr...), I really honestly have a gut feeling that this is a Wii U game. A mobile release would be coupled with a DeNA announcement, and while DQ XI was announced for the NX (accidentally), it seems unlikely that the current co-head of Nintendo would announce that an NX game was in near complete state. No, this looks like a Wii U game, likely reusing assets and the engine of 3 (thus saving money) and giving the Wii U one helluva a last (likely) major year. Pokkén Tournament, Pikmin 4, The Legend of Zelda U (which I also suspect won't move to the NX, just my opinion) and maybe some farfetched games like; Mario Kart 8 Complete Edition, Donkey Country Returns 3 (though...there would be riots over that), and maybe some other tricks up Nintendo's sleeve.
Still, 2016...is going to be a major year for Nintendo.

So it seems kinda unlikely they'd announce their first official NX game in a clumsy interview setting dontcha think?
I'm guessing this is either Wii U or 3DS. Probably Wii U so they can reuse assets.

Good point. Whatever platform it is on, wii U or NX, I'm buying it anyway.

I've been thinking. I'm not a big fan of the dungeons that were introduced in Pikmin 2. However, I wouldn't mind one massive dungeon hidden somewhere in the game. Like the Cave of Ordeals or the Savage Labyrinth in Zelda. One that sports many floors that get progressively more difficult.

@Octane: They could also make a cavern mode that is separate from the main game. It could be fun to have procedurally generated dungeons again with more of a rogue like feel to it. That could appease fans/critics of that aspect of Pikmin 2. I would personally like to see a return to the time limit in the first game as it added urgency to each day. I doubt Nintendo would do that though with their more recent trends of making games appeal to all skill sets.

Agreed, I liked the concept of the dungeons, I just thought that they completely disrupted the pace of the game. Pikmin 3 was a lot closer to Pikmin 1 in that regard, but finding fruit wasn't that difficult and in the end the limit was 100 days, more than enough to complete the game at your own pace. Perhaps a hard mode is necessary, one that lowers the time limit or something like that.
