I think the fact that you can rest between tge rounds makes it far too easy.

What soundtrack are people using?

I’m using the new soundtrack mostly, but on my next playthrough I’ll probably use the OG!

Both are so good, I think they did very well with the OSTs!

New soundtrack feels a little busy to me, been using my GameCube badge.

Apparently The Origami King only had 60 different enemies. That’s less than half of TTYD’s! Personally I didn’t mind it much in Origami King, just goes to show how unique and diverse TTYD is, and just how huge the game feels!

It doesn’t only feel huge, it is huge. it’s already my 3rd most played app on my Switch Lite (which has been my main console for well over a year now, about when I started caring more about Switch). Origami King is my 19th most played app on my Switch. To be fair I’ve taken advantage quite a bit with the music player on TTYD, but that only takes up some of the time.

TTYD never really feels slow, which happens occasionally in Origami King. I enjoy both games though. I’ve played through TOK on my Lite once, and I’ve played through it twice (once 100% it) on another console. I really enjoy TOK, but personally I think TTYD is better! I hope next Paper Mario takes the best aspects of both of these games, it would make for a crazy good game!

Both OST are totally forgettable to me, so...

The thing about the Power Bounce is not a frame rate issue, they literally changed the way the move is done as a way to nerf it a bit. Basically I think the timing after the 4th jump is different. The first 4 jumps you hit it just as you hit the enemy but for the ones after the timing is a bit stricter so its easier to hit it just a little bit before.

I'll just say some of the complaints about TTYD I very strongly agree with and some others I very strongly disagree with.

To me the real tragedy of TTYD is that they could've done several games in a similar style but without those issues and made a GOTY contender every 3-4 years since, but just didn't. I mean Nintendo arguably already does that with 3D Zelda and Mario anyway (even despite coming up with new issues half the time). Even ignoring new Paper Mario being what it is, TTYD is just an excellent starting point to continue making great games in a similar style. There's many less good, more boring games that have gotten so many more follow-ups (NSMB being the most obvious example), while TTYD got none.

In my opinion, what was an excellent starting point was the original N64 game. But what happened with that game is simple: released at the end of life of the N64, almost no one played it when it was released, so the game was buried with the N64 by the Gamecube and its sequel.
But whad did they do with that sequel? Instead of transcending this strong foundation, they did worse than the first game in almost everything:

  • worse dungeons and level-design;
  • worse music;
  • worse pace;
  • worse main city.
  • worse Bowser.

(and that is very personal, but I graphically prefer the character-design and the environments of the N64 game)

And some chapters are kind of remakes of some of the chapters of the original game, but:

  • worse Boo chapter;
  • worse snow chapter;
  • worse island chapter.

Since many players discovered the series with that Gamecube game, a very few of them were aware about what was better on the first N64 game.

The only things that are (a little) better in this sequel are the combat system and the companions. But else...

As if they lost their inspiration with that Gamecube sequel. If the series changed complety with Super Paper Mario and its sequels, it's not that surprising, I think. By the way, Super Paper Mario would have deserved a transcending sequel (like Paper Mario Color Splash which transcended Paper Mario Sticker Star).

Of course, it's just my opinion.

I can kinda see most of this but worse main city? Really? Even back when I wasn't as fond of TTYD, I still thought Rogueport was one of the best hubs in any game I've ever played. It's so diverse and fun to roam around in, and all the NPCs have their own side stories that go on over the course of the game. Toad Town in 64 is larger, but I got way more attached to Rogueport by the end of TTYD.

I feel that Rogueport has a lot of character,
but the fact that it's surrounded by water makes the whole world feel less connected to me compared to 64.

In Paper Mario there were a few chapters accessed from Toad Town like the toy box and flower fields. These were creative ideas, and there were many areas you did travel to on foot, so it felt like a good mix.
The chapter you get to from frozen sewer pipes was pushing it a little, but the frozen pipe aesthetic was good though. More than that would have been too much, and unfortunately all of Thousand Year Door is like that.
But it does kind of own it, and perhaps it works for one game.
For me though I prefer the greater connectedness of the 64 game. And that game in general.

Well technically the glitz pit, keelhaul island, and poshley heights are accessed organically without a pipe, but yeah none of the main areas around are physically connected via walkable roads to rogueport.

It might actually be the only paper mario that does it like that, since even the ones that use maps to move around show distinct roads connecting the levels.

This is genuinely one of my favorite games ever, probably tied as my favorite game ever. It’s so good, and I can’t believe we’ve never got a proper follow-up even 20 years later. Hopefully this remake means we’ll return to form! Maybe take some pointers from TOK as well, but I say mainly expanding on what PM64 and TTYD started is key.

As somebody who tends to get lost in RPGs after coming back to them from a long time, I really like how you can now talk to Goombella about what should be done next. Great quality-of-life improvement right there - the Mega Man Battle Network games have that same feature, more RPGs should have that too, honestly. It helps that each chapter has its own area, too. Something that the original Paper Mario does, as well.

I also just finished chapter 3 in the remake. And yeah... I didn't like that chapter, either. It's repetitive as heck and it drags on for so long. I do remember liking most of the later chapters, so I'm looking forward to chapter 4 next time I play.

I will agree I had some biased against TTYD for some reason when I originally played it. Especially after I replayed 64 this year but playing the remake made me appreciate it a whole lot more and I have to say it's at my number 1 spot with Mario 64 after it. Between Thousand Year Door and RPG though... can't chose between them. They were both really fun games that did different things.

@Uncle_Franklin Nice! That thing gets really tough!

@KaiserGX The early Mario RPGs are honestly some of the best games of all time, I don’t think I’ll ever understand why they rejected it for so long. SMRPG and TTYD remakes give me hope for the future of Mario RPGs.

@Uncle_Franklin That reminds me of when i cleared the Pits of 100 Trials in Super Paper Mario. And I was bale to get that last Pixl, Piccolo.

Felt satisfying after I completed it. Tough but worth doing.

(Pretty big spoiler here.)

Just finished chapter 4! Except... I didn't! Now I'm this shadowy Mario, and looks like Mario's gotta get his real self back. What a plot twist! I remember being... a bit surprised by this when I first played it on the GameCube. Same with Vivian joining your party!

@MarioVillager92 the fake ending to chapter 4 is a pretty funny reveal.

It’s interesting to think ?????? would’ve likely been successful in defeating Mario, had he been a bit less interested in gloating about it.
