Topic: NX backwards compatibility and VC - Help a noob out!

So I have a Wii U pre-ordered (they are sold out here in Australia where I live), the main reason I was going to get a Wii U is because I could get all the old classics (most of them anyway), plus Wii and Wii U games.

Now my question is, will the VC and eShop be available with the NX? I know there's not a lot of details out there for the NX yet, but I am a complete noob and returning Nintendo player. If it hasn't been confirmed yet, can you guys give me your thoughts?

If the NX will most likely do this, I think I will cancel my purchase of the Wii U as I do not have much money.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

We dont know

But it's safe to assume Virtual Console will be coming back, as the previous generation (along with this one) have it.

Basically honestly it's anyone's guess. They haven't announced anything so it could go either way. However I will add that if what has happened to the VC is any indication of the future of the VC I wouldn't count on it. While the VC was great on the Wii is was somewhat lacking on the Wii U.

My thoughts on this is this don't count on it that way your are not disappointed when it doesn't happen. If that is your reason for buying a Wii U right now and you don't have much money then I personally would wait to see what happens but that's just me. In the end it's up to you you just have to think, if for some reason Nintendo doesn't announce a VC for the NX or if you are unable to transfer purchases from the Wii U to the NX will it be a big deal for you. If the answer is yes then I would hold off on getting the Wii U.

I think it will return but it needs to be revamped.

I'm betting that it's going to come back, along with the Virtual Console...hopefully this time they don't start over with the service.
@WebHead Define "revamped". Do you mean something like being able to download every Wii U game, or...

maybe a netflix style system.

@MaddMatt, the answer really is "no one knows." We likely won't know until 2016, which is when Nintendo has stated they'll start talking about the NX.

We can speculate, though. Here's my guess, which is somewhere between "wild" and "informed."

I think that, as you put it, the NX will "most likely" have a Virtual Console or a VC-like service. Based on everything we know about the NX via president Iwata's statements, the platform is going to be absolutely buoyed by Nintendo software. That may seem like a redundant statement since the same has been true for the Wii U and 3DS, but it seems that the NX is going to be designed from the outset to make it easier for Nintendo to provide as much of their own software as possible, to lessen the impact of going (largely) without third party software.

For Nintendo to exclude their massively successful past library from that equation seems highly unlikely; I'd go so far as to say having access to downloadable classic games is nearly guaranteed. I'll take it a step further and speculate that, in the case that you do go ahead and buy a Wii U, purchases made via your Nintendo Network ID will "count" on the NX. Nintendo recently announced the upcoming Nintendo Account system, and the Nintendo Network ID carries over to it; at the very least, I'd wager that you'll get heavy discounts on any games that you'd have to re-buy on the NX (Nintendo managed to offer that perk from the Wii to Wii U even before having a unified account system in place).

So there's my rambling speculation.

Thanks guys.

I think I will hold off now now until we get some confirmations, I am hopeful though that the NX will allow older games on it, in that case I'd just get the NX.

If that isn't the case, then hopefully by the time the NX has more details, the Wii U might be even cheaper LOL.

Again, thank you so much guys, was a big help

Here is my opinion. if Microsoft can get Xbox 360 games to run on a Xbox one just fine seeing as the Xbox one is a completely different architecture than the 360 then yes Nintendo can get Wii U, Wii and even GameCube to run via emulation similar to that which Microsoft is using to run 360 games on Xbone. The real question is... will Nintendo even put any effort into it and continue supporting the Virtual Console along with it? time will tell.

I hate to be so pessimistic but I doubt it will be like the VC we've already seen. it will probably be a new system and we'll probably have to buy all our games all over again (but on discount if we've purchased them before) like on Wii U. And, I'm not going to lie, but the Wii U's VC is probably the thing I'm most disappointed with with the Wii U. So I'm not exactly holding my breath to see what the NX's VC is going to be like.
