I have thought about purchasing the DLC for Zelda Breath Of The Wild. However I attend to restart the game once or twice a year and play all the way through.
When the switch eshop ends and Nintendo drops support for the switch will I be able to restart the game and use the DlC or will it be gone?
I hate spending money on something that I may not be able to use in the feature
@Tay205 When eshop support ends, Nintendo doesn't take digital games & dlc content away from you. The content on your console is yours. You just won't be able to redownload them.
Regarding starting new games, when you boot up BOTW, the menu options are Continue and New Game. So, you can select new game, if you want to start over. OR... you can make a new switch user, and use that as a new save file. (Although, if you ever wanted to transfer to a new Switch, game save data can only be transferred if that Switch user is linked to a nintendo account.)
@Tay205 Bearing in mind there's usually a bit of a gap from when store stops allowing new purchases etc, but still allows you to download previous purchases. Last time I checked I could still download Wii games for example even though the Wii store closed a couple of years ago - it was a while ago though, and might have closed completely by now.
There has also been speculation that whatever replaces the Switch may be backward compatible, so it's possible the Switch eShop might stay around for a while yet
If you bought the game and the dlc(downloadable content), they stay on your console. You own them, and can play them as much as you want. Whether or not eshop is still running is irrelevant.
On BOTW, if you pick "new game", your previous game save file will be deleted/over-written, and you start new game save file. (you will still have access to dlc, because you bought and dowloaded it to your console)
If eshop closed up today, all the digital games & dlc you already owned/downloaded would remain on your console and remain playable. You only use eshop to purchase & download digital content, then it's yours.
@WoomyNNYes that's good. Because I don't want to but the DLC to find out when the eshop does close to find out that I won't be able to use the DLC after the eshop does close
That's completely fair @Tay205 . That's something I question a lot. Even though I wasn't playing it, there's a part of me that's still kind of upset I never got all the digital games I wanted from the Wii Shop Channel. As a Wii U/3DS owner who's still working on my collections for those, I'm concerned as well. I feel like the Switch eShop still has a long life at the moment, especially since there isn't a new one on the horizon.

@WoomyNNYes let's say I brought the DLC for BOTW last Friday for example and I bet the game with the DLC, then 2-6 months from now I wanted to replay the game. When I click New Game how can I use DLC?
Do I need to re-download the DLC or is it pop up in the game?
@Tay205 : Once downloaded, there's nothing to "activate", the DLC is, for the most part, seamlessly integrated into the game.
There is also a physical option available if you want to own Breath of the Wild and the DLC on a single cartridge for prosperity, however, you will need to import it from Japan (English is included on the cartridge and will be compatible with your existing save data, if any), so that's an option if you want a complete physical edition.
I'll just add to what Silly_G said:
Even though the dlc doesn't get saved onto your physical game card, the Switch system is engineered to run the game + dlc as one program/game. From your point of view, the game will act like the dlc was part of the game all along.
I'm in the same boat as you. I bought BOTW physcial at launch, and like you, it doesn't have the dlc on the game card. (that's the only way physical BOTW has been sold in North America, so far.) When the dlc released december 2017, I did buy the dlc.
@WoomyNNYes good to know. Ya I never brought any dlc so I just wanted to be sure I have them forever until the switch breaks. I was scared to buy it at first
@Tay205 : You can't buy them separately. They were initially released in two separate waves, but if you download the expansion pass now, you have both by default.
Porygon did nothing wrong.

@Tay205 I bought ALL ONE of it. 🙃😉 (I'm just being silly, there) There's only one dlc option for BOTW, the $19.99 Expansion Pass. Originally, it was released in two parts, as Silly_G mentioned. So, that's why they mention DLC pack 1 & 2.
DLC Pack 1 (Master Trials, Trial of the Sword) released summer 2017,
DLC Pack 2 (Champions Ballad) released December 2017.
