Topic: Nintendo switch Battery question

Tay205

So I had a battery replacement done last week by a repair shop for my 2017 model Nintendo switch.

Today (Feb 16) I thought I had a battery life issue finding out its just early to worry about.

The repair shop told me not to leave the switch in the dock after it gets fully charged.

I believe the guy does not know nothing about the Nintendo switch.

I know that Nintendo put a chip on the motherboard to stop the switch from overcharging.

However I had brought a animal crossing switch (2019 model) in May of 2021 and it's been in the dock since. I have no issues with that switch as I mostly play that switch docked.

However, I want the 2017 model for hand held play once a week.

I will play the 2017 switch once a week in hand held mode but other times it be either in dock or turned off

Will the New battery get harmed if I leave it in the dock?

If those are OEM battery for Nintendo Switch leaving Docked shouldn't hurt it. Since it a new battery it should perform better then the old battery. Just make sure it's not some off-brand and has a good warranty for it.

It shouldn’t have any issues- I’ve had one since 2018 and I just keep it in the holder and it hasn’t shown any signs of battery wearing or anything. I mean, if you aren’t going to use it for a month or something it might not hurt to turn shut it off and keep it unplugged from charging but otherwise you should be good.

Happy gaming!!

If you are responding to me in forums or a comment I would much appreciate it if you quoted or tagged me in your responses so I can see it and respond. Otherwise I usually can’t tell that you’ve replied. Thanks!

@Tay205 The switch battery is a lithium ion battery. I don't think there's anything special about it other than it may last for more charge cycles than some aftermarket batteries because than Nintendo's OEM quality may give it an edge.

Earlier I said I've never seen the Nintendo branded battery sold for the Switch, but I just found one on ifixit's website. I don't know anything about ifixit, though.

ifixit's replacment battery how-to for the Switch.(you may have seen this searching youtube already)

@SwitchForce it's not oem. I only have a 90 day warranty. I just find it odd he told me not to leave it docked over 100%

@WoomyNNYes should I just leave it docked then and use it in handheld when I want to?
Or play it in dock then unplug it?

@Tay205 Since that repair place said give it a month, maybe you should treat your switch like normal, leave it docked if you want. If you don't treat it like normal for this month, you might end up needlessly paranoid.

It's a rechargeable lithium ion battery. Charging is managed by the console. I'm not aware of any other reason to worry.

Anyone see anything wrong with that?

@WoomyNNYes I did also replaced the thermal paste as well. I wonder if that had anything to do with that?

That's recommend DO if anyone removes the heatsink on Switch or anything that has a heat sink attached to it or you'll be very SORRY.

Tay205

@SwitchForce oh I didn't remove the heatsink just the battery. But I did replace the thermal paste on on top of the heat sink and the metal sheild

@WoomyNNYes my mother thinks it's possible that the motherboard could be defective causing it to show improper battery life.

I am half way thinking if it's a battery or motherboard issue.

When the battery is 100% charged I turned it off completely and few minutes later when I turned it back on it read 97%.

I am now wondering if this could be a issue with the motherboard.

@Tay205 If something was wrong with the the mother board, I think you'd have more severe problems, or things wouldn't work, but so far, it sounds like your switch plays fine otherwise.

You can show you mother this Nintendo support page, if you want:

The Battery Charge Indicator or Percentage Displays Incorrectly
https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a...

You'll notice the last step says,

7. Repeat steps 2 through 6 several times.

The battery charge indicator will improve gradually by repeating this process several times.

Those directions fall in line with what my understanding that the console/system has to learn a new battery in order to estimate how much charge it has. Going from full charge to letting the battery run down to very low before charging it again. And you may have to do it more than once. (I've seen similar directions for smartphones. The switch console is a tablet running on mobile technology.)

I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but that's what I know. And the Nintendo Support directions are in line with that.

Now, if you follow the directions (they are bit tedious) and the console never seems to work for as long as it should, then I'd question the size the replacement battery was. Did they tell you how many mAh the replacement battery has? Was it logged on the receipt/work order?

If everything is a never ending headache, you may have to accept a loss. The switch is in such high demand, I know gamestop offers a good amount of cash for trade-in, or slightly more if you take store credit. **If you did get another switch, and you'll need to have both the old and new one to transfer game saves. So, find out how much you can get for your switch, buy a new one, transfer game save data from old switch to new switch, then trade-in/sell your old switch.

@WoomyNNYes ya I may get Another switch sometime. I think I get a LCD switch.

I would get an OLED but I am afraid that I may have issues with "BURN IN". I don't mind issues with the battery but burn in I may be upset about.

Do you have the OLED switch?

Tay205

WoomyNNYes

haha, oh, @Tay205<3 You're doing a heck of a job of finding reasons to worry.😉

If you're not in a hurry for a new console, the OLED may drop in price by spring/summer, perhaps. You won't miss it if you dont get it. But, if you did get an OLED, I don't think you'd regret it. ....And, OLED screen burn-in is basically a non-issue. See video below.

I know you're bummed with your battery situation, but the chances of you having problems with a new switch are so low. ...If you were going to bet money that your next switch will have problems, you're almost guaranteed to lose that bet. And, even IF you did find something wrong with a new switch, if you notice it within the first month, I think most any store would let you return it, especially if you deal with the manager. Managers are most likely to want to keep you happy.

@Tay205 I got a switch in 2017 when the console launched (I had to have Mario Kart 8!). I had the launch switch for 4 years 9 months, put about 3000+ hours on that one. A couple months ago, around christmas, I got an OLED.

@Tay205 Nobdy's OLEDs have burn in. You really should watch that youtube video I posted above, you'll see, it's nothing to worry about. Play it at 1.5x speed if you want to get through it faster.

My OLED is two months old, no issues.
My nieces got an OLED at christmas, no issues.
My launch day Switch from March 3, 2017, lasted 5 years, has over 3000 hours of play time on it. Still runs. No burn in.

@WoomyNNYes cool. I was looking at best buy and the reviews I saw people having green tint on their switch oled when in handheld mode and brightness in the middle and there be a green tint. Now I don't know if your oled has it or not but I counted over 25 reviews on best buy having a green tint. That's something I should worry lol

Tay205

Tay205

@Rambler oh
I may just get another regular LCD. I Rather safe the money since I just normally play it docked
