With the Switch having reached a year old, I think most of us will agree it has proven to be a success thus far. The Switch has an impressive library of games, from major 1st party releases, to an endless stream of Neo-Geo Ports (that I still find random as hell). The console's versatility has proven its under-powered nature is acceptable in the face of how nice it is to take games with you where ever you go.
However, for its success to continue Nintendo can't wait for the online service to launch with new features. They cannot wait for E3 to announce big new games. The steady flow of indie games and ports has kept the eshop alive, but we've gone a few months without a big release OR a big announcement of a release. If Nintendo wants the Switch wave to continue, we need more than Nintendo Labo and a multi-player Kirby. There are all sorts of things they could do or announce, but they need to capitalize on the hype while it is still there.
I am concerned they might try to ride on the success from last year all the way through to summer or even fall, and that just wont work. The hype will fade, the sales will drop off and this amazing momentum they have will be next to impossible to re-acquire.
They should officially reveal Fire Emblem and Yoshi. Also, gives release windows for Octopath and Travis Strikes Back.
New game announcements are always welcome obviously, but not if the game is too far off. For the most part, Nintendo should stick with revealing games and releasing games within a 12 month period. Of course there's exceptions like Prime 4 and Bayo 3, but almost all of the Switch games out now released within a year of the the official announcement.
"Nintendo should do the thing they do every year" ok
also some of y'all are gonna be so shocked and/or mad when Labo sells better than most Nintendo IP
Like I do agree we should know at least a BIT more about what's coming after Mario Tennis but at the same time, I'd be so happy to actually have an E3 with strong announcements again (well strong announcements that show more than the number 4 anyway)
@kkslider5552000 Why would/should people be mad if Labo does well? Just because I seriously doubt it will do very well, doesn't mean I WANT it to fail. Further, why would anyone WANT it to fail? Not like it succeeding would hurt them in any way.

In 2017, they had one on April 12. In 2016, they had one on March 3.
I‘m pretty sure we‘ll get one before E3. The one in January was a Mini and didn‘t promote bigger releases all that much due to its format. Maybe around March 16, the day Star Allies releases.

Impatient gamers might want announcements sooner, but waiting 90 more days isn't going to kill anybody
That said I wouldn't be surprised because they usually do have a small direct around April or May. But if they don't I don't think that's really going to change anything which kind of contradicts stating they "need" it.

Maybe between March and April, there will be another Nintendo Direct with Agenda about :
1. Nintendo Labo
2. Mario Tennis Aces
3. New Zelda games
4. The Snack World Trejares Switch version
5. Some upcoming E-shop games
6. (Hopefully) Animal Crossing & Pokemon for Switch
7. Metroid Prime 4 first footage
8. (Probably) Yokai Watch 3 Sushi / Tempura English localization
@JaxonH they need to at least put out dates for Hyrule Warriors and Mario Tennis Aces which both have Spring listed as their release window. Even though Spring ends June 21st, they really need dates before E3.
@faint I am not suggesting it is not. But in order to continue doing well... My point is that they need to keep fueling the fire or the fire is gonna burn out.

@Alikan
They do, and they could do it in a direct as well, but I'm not sure they need a direct to do it.
At this point we are so close to E3 why not just wait and go in with a bang. Tweet the release dates out and hype Kirby, HW, DKC and Mario Tennis, Dark Souls, and save everything else for the expo.
That's what I would do anyways

A new direct yes. will it have Prime 4/Pokemon/Bayo3/Smash 4 DX? probably not. at least, save some huge announcements for E3. i do expect one from April to May. i'd be shock if we get one this month though.

Theres likely to be another Direct before E3. I'd say there would be something to include more info on Wolfenstein 2. Isn't it still do out this Spring?
Sony announcing Spider-Man and God of War PS4 at E3 2016 only for them to have no big news until their second trailers at E3 2017 could be rightly called impatience. Whatever Nintendo's doing could be called complacency or confusion.
They have an exclusives-driven ecosystem, they should tell people what they can look forward to this year just like they did with the Switch Direct.
I have no doubt we'll get a Nintendo Direct before E3. I kinda doubt we'll see any major announcements before E3 though. I'm mostly expecting more info on third party games and the upcoming 1st party titles.
Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again
I have to point this out again, was there actual concern there wouldn't be one? Because I think there's been one around April since the Wii U era.
looks it up
Ok, so there's literally been a main Nintendo Direct in April for three out of five years. And the exceptions was two directs for Smash Bros and Mario Kart in 2014 (and the Mario Kart one I remember being massive) and nothing in 2016 because it was Nintendo in 2016.
This exactly. What Nintendo needs is to put out good games when they're done. What fans want is not to be kept in suspense. These two get mixed up on the forums all the time...
@toiletduck It works both ways. @Haru17 has a point. The main selling point of Nintendo's hardware is their exclusives, if people don't know what to expect this fall for example, it may influence their purchases. Now, it's not like the Switch is a Wii U 2.0 and it needs everything it can get to stay afloat, but it does help I think. You can look up ''upcoming PS4 games'' and you get a whole catalog of games with trailer, teaser trailers, gameplay demos, etc. Whereas the Switch right now has ''Yoshi''.
That being said, I do think Sony is currently backpedaling because they released they cannot reveal half a dozen games at each conference if they can't keep up with the actual releases. That's why last year's E3 only had the SOTC remake and Capcom's MHW.
I think there's a perfect balance in between. Having some idea of what's to come, but also leaving a bit of room for surprises.
@kkslider5552000 They had a Direct in March 2016, though. In 2014, they made a ton of announcements at E3, but have since gone away from that strategy.
