Topic: Nintendo Selects still a thing?

Just wondering when Nintendo is finally going to discount old, popular games. Any rumors out there? Seems like it’s been since February 2019 since the last update.

Pretty sure they'll be a thing for the Switch when it's on its way out.

@koffing Like @MarioLover92 said, they're still selling strong enough, they haven't started offering select games yet, but if you watch, the big Nintendo games are getting 20-30% off at times - They did that around black friday & much of December. If they aren't on sale now, I don't know how long you have to wait to see those sales again, though. For sure, just before E3, lots of games go on sale, but that's in mid June.

Too soon for Nintendo Selects on Switch. It took until early 2016 in North America to get 3DS Nintendo Selects. We're not going to see them on Switch until at least 2021 I'm thinking.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe should be one of the first releases. It's sold so much already, and it's a port at that.

What Would W. Do?

Sad. Thanks everyone. Yeah, I am hoping discounts happen sooner for 2016-2017 games. In particular, Splatoon 2. I have two copies — one for full price the other I got on sale for $30 — and now I need a third copy (which is a good problem to have but... it’s hard to buy the same game again for near full price three years after it came out and sans Splatfests).

Any Hot selling or Popular games aren't going to go on-sale except for holidays or your buying from 2nd used games stores. Those are your only options and that isn't going to change.

Well, I think it’s completely possible that it will change! Many other console and PC games from 2018 last year are available for cheaps. I get that there is a Nintendo tax, but it’s not a rule written in stone or physics. : ) Nintendo has created this weird personal device slash family device. And it’s confusing to many parents. And they need to keep improving it. And there will be pressure for them to do so!

Selects generally start close to a system's successor launch. 3DS and Wii U Selects started in 2016 (Switch launched March 2017), Wii Selects started in 2011 (Wii U launched November 2012), etc. so we'll probably see Switch Selects around a year before the Switch's successor launches which may be a long way off if Nintendo goes the mid gen slightly more powerful revision strategy.

@koffing Why do you need another copy of Splatoon 2?

Better Nintendo release the Ultimate Hits version for their first release.
It will contain with the latest updates and All DLC in one cartridge.
Just look at ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, etc that have so many updates.
Nintendo have done with Welcome Amiibo 3DS, so i think Nintendo should release the Ultimate version for Switch games.

Other games did the same thing such as Mario + Rabbid Gold Edition, The Sims 4 PS4 Rebranding, World of Final Fantasy Maxima, 99 Vidas Switch version.

I HAVE BEEN CHANGED.... FOR GOOD. 💚💗

Three family members who want to play together simultaneously in Salmon Run etc.. We could already do two together — in theory — if we had the digital copy and the purchaser was on the secondary system. But currently we do physical releases as much as reasonable.

Like the Players Choice games back in the 90s or greatest hits of Sony?

I actually think we might see a limited selection of “Selects” games next autumn. As the next gen consoles launch Switch will become increasingly positioned as a budget/entry option.

Half a dozen games like Kirby, Mario Tennis, Mario Party and DK TF - from early in the Switch’s life cycle and aimed at the younger end of the spectrum than (say) Zelda or (even) Mario Odyssey would make a lot of sense at half price.

@koffing wait. I only need to own two copies of splatoon over four systems to get salmon run to work? If so I'm dumber than I look. I have a lan room with four switches with four copies of splatoon 2.

I would consider double-dipping on games if they have all software updates and DLC on cartridge; of course this would be under the assumption that the developer has no further plans to update the software.

There is some anecdotal evidence that Nintendo reissues cartridges with software updates included on them, but the downside is that if they do issue another update after the fact, then the entirety of any updates to date must be downloaded (i.e. the console won't merely download the difference between the two versions, but rather, all updates from version 1.0 to current, regardless of what version you have on the cartridge, which would negate any benefit from having a more recent build on the cartridge).

Ubisoft are so scummy and lazy that they included the broken version 1.0 of Monopoly on the Hasbro Game Night cartridge, even though the latest version 1.4 had already been available for some time at the time of HGN's release. > No committment to quality whatsoever with a lot of publishers, sadly.

It is a fact that Switch games are expensive. However you can sometimes find games used or on sale for lower price at GameStop.

I can see BOTW2 kicking off a Selects entry of BOTW just to get people on the fence to jump in and to reduce consumer confusion. Nintendo likes to make one big franchise entry per gen or make them wildly different in art direction (I'm sure somebody pitched making LA look like BOTW and it got vetoed. Granted I love the toybox/model world style).

However I can't think of too many other games that would sit nicely in the Selects bin unless the Switch was on the way out. Evergreen games are selling just fine. So short of sales just tanking all of a sudden, I think we shall see the selects in 2021 at the earliest. I feel like the versions that include the guides are also semi-selects entries as the game itself is technically discounted.
