@Bolt_Strike
Switch 2 and Switch 1 aren't in the same situation, a Switch 2 Edition re-release of an old Switch 1 game doesn't have anywhere near the same selling potential as a port of an old Wii U game on Switch.
We definitely will get a new Smash, complete with several rounds of DLC. I just can't see them letting a hardware generation go by without missing a chance to milk one of their biggest cash cows.
The same goes for all the other big franchises; they'll just be spread out through the next four years rather than dropped all at once.
@Matt_Barber Again, we can't really say this when that's exactly what they did with Mario Kart on the Switch. Granted that was a situation of the hardware not being good enough to run MKW, but still the fact of the matter is that the Switch came and went without a new, flagship entry in the Mario Kart IP so the capacity is there.
They could certainly ATTEMPT to put out all of their biggest franchises, but whether they actually all land on the Switch 2 may be questionable because of delays and hardware limitations. And there usually is at least one recurring IP that misses a generation (it's usually more of a medium or lower selling IP, but they seem to be unable to avoid something missing the console every generation).
So yeah, I'm not really saying for sure that Smash 6 won't happen on Switch 2, but it's a distinct possibility and there's definitely going to be a gap somewhere in the lineup that we may not be expecting and end up disappointed in just because of the nature of game development.
@Bolt_Strike The point isn't that we got a freshly made Mario Kart, because we obviously didn't, but that we had to buy it again if we wanted to play it on the Switch because it wasn't backwards compatible.
I suppose that they could have reached out to all the Wii U owners and given them a free/cheap upgrade even, and that wouldn't have taken that much of a bite out of overall sales because it wasn't a very popular console. However, they didn't do that.
As such, I'd think that there will be a new Smash game even if it's basically just the old one with better graphics and more content. I suppose that they could bite off more than they can chew, and get stuck in development hell until the next console comes along, in which case selling an upgrade pack for the older game might be a fall back option; I just can't see them doing that by choice.
@Matt_Barber I do think they're more likely to try something more ambitious for Smash 6 that could lead to them needing extra time actually. After Smash Ultimate they kind of have to because otherwise it would feel like a downgrade with the inevitable decrease in characters, if the game can find something else to hang its hat on then it could at least position itself as a sidegrade that has its own advantages. The problem is that it's difficult to tell what that something is and Nintendo themselves might need time to figure that out. So yes, a MK8D scenario feels very plausible here depending on how long it takes them to one-up Ultimate in some way. Ultimate S2E feels like a better outlet for the demand for high-performance Smash with new characters/stages from more recent games. Coming off Ultimate and trying that for a proper Smash 6 feels like a tough sell I think.
Yeah agree with the others here, that a new Smash if a when not an if. I wouldn't mind if they took a similar approach to MKW, where, knowing that outside of doing a Smash Ultimate Deluxe, they can't really expand on what they just put out, so they'll have to try something new.
On the subject of MKW, I am surprised we haven't gotten some additional content yet, but I imagine that'll happen soonish. Not expecting any new courses until '27 or '28, but some new outfits or characters would be nice. I'm sure they'll add other courses or maybe worlds, as I imagine they'll want MKW active throughout the console's life cycle. A cycle which could easily be another 8 years as I think longer console cycles are the new norm, if the reaction to the PS6 leaks is anything to go off of.
I know there's usually a direct in Feb, July, and September, but is there ever one at the end of the year? I seem to have lost my obsession with directs lol
@Tayrailbridge We're getting a Kirby direct. Probably a Metroid direct. Sometimes there is an indie or partner showcase late in the year. General direct though? No chance — there are already a ton of upcoming first party games announced so there is zero need to have a general direct before February.
@Tayrailbridge It doesn't make sense to have one at the end of the year (and especially not now when they can do random social media drops and Nintendo Today updates). They're typically not going to have much coming out soon after because most of it is positioned for the holiday season and December/January tends not to have as much. So we're probably waiting until February for the next big wave of news. In the meantime it's probably smaller showcases and random drops.
Isn't Hyrule Warriors coming before Kirby? why focus an hour long Direct on Kirby before HW. There was already quite a hefty chunk of information and footage of Air Riders in the last Direct.
As for all the comments regarding Smash Brothers, didn't they say somewhere that they won't be making a new one as the current one is pretty much.... well.... "Ultimate". Not sure what a new SB game could bring to the table that the current one doesn't already have.
I'm still waiting for them to announce a game that will make me stand up and shout "Take my money! - My house and my car ...well I don't actually own a car but you can have my neighbours car."
@Grumblevolcano@caleboi25 That's why I said, keep selling the Fighter Passes for people who just buy the Switch 2 version, and don't already have them, but give them to the people who already bought them on Switch 1, in same way as BOTW Switch 2 edition. That gets rids of so many of the licensing headaches and I assume they would have put those licenses on as long a contract as they could. After all, Smash is some of the best advertising for any game, and with Smash Wii U and 3DS, those licenses lasted till the end of their respective eshops.
Also with what Cale said about it not happening cause of it running better on Switch 2; that has happened with so many fighting game upgrades. You had Super SF4 PS3 into Ultra SF4 PS4, you have Mortal Kombat 11 being sold on previous and current gen, you have DBFZ having next gen upgrades. They could just have separate servers, and finally include rollback netcode, cause I think most big Smash fans really want better online. And or, have the option to fight with previous gen if you want, as a lot of those other games do.
@SplatRay001
I'm hoping it's like the Galaxy games where they announce something and then just "oh and on Switch 2 it's running at 4K" in the fine print on the eShop page or something. It makes no sense to me why they would do that, especially for Pikmin which kinda trades on it looking shiny, but they have done this kind of thing before
For my part I didn't pick up Pikmin 4. If there's a resolution upgrade with this? I'll use the second half of the voucher I'm getting for Prime 4 to pick this up. If not I'll hold out a bit longer to see what else comes up
@SplatRay001@skywake I think Nintendo may have learned from Prime 4 not to talk about performance anymore. With them bragging in April about how the game runs at 4K 60fps/1080p 120fps on Switch 2, if any gameplay shown is lower performance you know for sure Digital Foundry will pick up on it and then that'll create a negativity cycle about the game/console. Performance enhancements are better off kept secret.
@Grumblevolcano
That's ridiculous, just because other games don't reach the same resolution/frame rate bench marks as Prime 4 doesn't mean Nintendo will just never talk about performance ever again. Digital Foundry is not some authority that must be impressed.
@westman98 My point was about if Nintendo released Prime 4 Switch 2 gameplay that wasn't 4K 60fps, not how Prime 4's performance compares to other games. In an alternate reality where Nintendo didn't brag about performance in April, we may have been able to see more of the game by now because there wouldn't have been that requirement for every piece of Switch 2 gameplay to be 4K 60fps.
