When he said "his understanding is the other 2 would be more HD ports" that's because all the speculation and rumor at the time was that. And he just kind of went along with the current of popular belief. Just like when Trilogy was originally rumored back in 2017, despite no actual credible leak suggesting it, everyone just went along with it because that's what popular opinion was at the time.
The original leak from the known credible source always said all 3 were green lit to be Remastered.
I have respect for Grubb, but in this case he was just repeating the leak from Emily back in 2021, and repeating "from his understanding" which clearly came from popular discourse at the time, which grew legs of its own.
Idk. I can see why ppl would think that when you've got ppl like Grubb repeating it, but I always go to the original source, and the original source never said that. As often happens, ppl have some legit info but assume the rest. "Retro is working on Prime 4 ergo they don't have to remaster all of them ergo they'll just be HD ports". It's perfectly logical, but nearly every leak I've seen that didn't pan out is because of assumptions like that. Nate the Hate infamously got info on a new system being worked on, legit info, but then assumed it was a Pro and reported it as such. When he should have stuck to the facts- a new Switch is being worked on. Nothing more, nothing less.
I watched that Digital Foundry episode, and they had no sources at all.
It all stemmed from Nate the Hate saving face trying to say, "well, it wasn't a Switch Pro, but uh... I totally wasn't wrong, they just cancelled it, ya that's it, they cancelled it" and Digital Foundry went along with that narrative, since it also helped them save face.
You have to be veeery careful listening to ppl when they make claims. You'll notice they never say a source claims it was cancelled or a source confirms it was cancelled. They just throw it out there, surmised from logical deduction but presented as fact.

What if this is Nintendo creating their new standard for rereleasing GameCube-era content? I know it's super hopeful thinking, but if they wanted to, they could easily port games like the other two Prime games and WW/TP for Zelda, give them some upscaling and shadow-drop them at $40 with a physical copy two days later. It does kind of seem like they have all this content in their backlog, and they have no idea when to release them.

@Cia They could do as Metroid Prime 1 Remaster was finished around 2 years ago!! That's plenty of time to be working on the other two, assuming they weren't doing some items concurrently, which is feasible.
@ElRoberico Remastering Game Cube games makes a lot of sense for filler titles though I wouldn’t expect most to be done to the same standard as Metroid Prime was. Same with the Wii games too.

@FragRed Honestly, with the amount of GameCube titles go for on the secondhand market, I will gladly pay $40 for a physical/digital copy of them, especially for dormant franchises.

@ElRoberico Maybe now with the Switch doing so well and games selling sometimes better than ever before, bringing back dormant franchises would be perfect timing. I’m not sure anyone understands how Nintendo decides on these ideas.

I remember disliking this when I first tried it on gamecube hot off the heels of becoming a Super Metroid snob but - while I still disagree this is on the same level as 2D Metroid - I'm having fun getting lost in prime rn. Went into the deepest parts of the pirate ship only to realize I need the gravity suit lol
I just got the ice beam, then explored the underwater section as far as the Energy Tank, now heading back to Phendrana Drifts. This game is so good... It's SO. FREAKING. GOOD!!!
If you don't bring back F-Zero, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, etc now, there's no point trying later when a new gen starts with a far smaller install base.
Now is the time. 2023, early 2024. I'm willing to bet we see an HD port of F-Zero GX with online and an HD remaster of Kid Icarus Uprising. I don't think Star Fox is coming back though. That one is toast. Maybe they port Zero with single screen controls, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

@JaxonH Star Fox is a one trick pony. It’s really a great tech demo for the SNES 3D capabilities thanks to the Special FX chip (is that the name of it?), N64 and 3DS. But it never evolved in terms of gameplay. F-Zero GX makes a lot of sense to remaster with online. I’m not too sure Kid Icarus will come back. It would need a lot more work to bring that over from the 3DS than say a GameCube game. But Nintendo may already have green lit it and it’s just sitting in the vaults waiting to get released. I do think there’s a fairly good chance they do a Metroid Prime Remastered type of port for Eternal Darkness. It would beef up the more mature game’s library on offer and could do well enough to create a horror franchise for their systems.

I mean you're wrong in multiple ways, as multiple Star Fox games played very different to the early games, and also there are obvious examples of games with space dogfights that did more things than a Star Fox game did that could easily work in a Star Fox game (including that one Ubisoft game that had Star Fox in it).
It's also just a weird criticism of a series that is often praised more the closer the later games are like the earlier games and criticized more for their unique ideas.

On the one hand, yes there were some Star Fox games that dared to branch out a bit, but the biggest example was [Dinsaur Planet I think it was called?] which wasn't really Star Fox any more than Super Mario Bros 2 was Mario. Aside from that, Command, Assault and Zero offered some new ideas, but nothing really evolved. It was more trial and error throwing various ideas at the wall to see what would stick.
I do think Star Fox could have a future without evolving- a straight laced on rails entry in HD with quality gameplay could sell 1-2 million copies and keep the series alive. But it doesn't seem any Nintendo developers want to make a new Star Fox. Miamoto himself had to make Zero and that just rehashed 64.
I always thought StarFox 64 and Sin & Punishment 2: Star Successor were the best two on rails shooters ever made. If those two series came back, even as digital only titles for like, $39.99, I think they could do well enough to stay profitable, since they wouldn't need to make a full scale game attempting to justify a $60 price tag.

I mean, literally if they just made another Star Fox Zero with more normal controls, more original levels, not a repeat of the Star Fox 64 story and understanding what made the original actually replayable, it would probably be awesome. I'd be more than fine with that.
I dunno, I think Star Fox has the exact same problem as Sonic, where people just wanna go back to the classics because every other idea they ever put out is obviously flawed and they don't often make sequels to them to...fix those flaws. And its kinda worse because at least Sonic (...used to) have enough games where you could get some quality stuff between the meh to bad games. Whereas Star Fox post-2006 has had one remake, one technically original game that re-uses the 64 story with very divisive controls on a dying console, a mediocre tower defense game for some reason, and a Star Fox game that's technically another company's original IP.
One thing that annoys me about most reviewers is the claim that the original control scheme is dated and not on par with "today's standards".
When the original game was released there were already multiple dual stick shooters on the market. Gamecube also had two sticks and enough buttons to allow dual stick setup.
They made the original "classic" controls to compliment the gameplay. They didn't care how other fps games controlled. The classic setup is still the best control method because changing beams suck with the new controls. You can change the beams on fly in any situation and also strafe with classic controls. You can jump while locking your aim downwards for easier platforming. Using the LT button, you don't lock only to enemies. It's used to lock your viewpoint in different situations.
I don't see any benefit using the dual stick system. Certainly it's not as bad as the motion controls, but it should not be the default option either. It's there only for the people who never even gave a proper chance to classic controls, or in other case, never learned how to use them properly. In other words, they made it for people who still think Metroid Prime is a fps game (even though the proper term is fpa). These people prefer the game work in the conditions of other shooters. I prefer it to work in its own conditions.
I bet the fastest speedrunners will still be doing it with the original controls.
