Guess it’s good that they’ll offer the main three game separately as well. That way you can play whichever you’re most interested on without all the fluff…

With some luck, the movies will be an optional download even for the digital version of the collection.

@TheBigBlue

The physical release is just a download launcher on Switch. It appears Konami have opted to use a 4GB cartridge (denoted by the 2.4GB frontload mentioned in the image below). The NES versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 are on cartridge. Everything else is a download, 54GB+ for everything else.

Yeah, I’m still throwing money at this regardless.

So I'm curious to why Metal Gear Solid is larger in file size compared to Metal Gear Solid 2 and that Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 take up 1.4GB.

Hmm. I was wrong, I thought they put at least all the games on the one cartridge and put the bonuses on an additional download once you put the cartridge in or something. It does save space, I suppose. Still a physical pickup regardless, I am quite excited for this one

wonder what the Volume 2 collection will have? Probably Metal Gear Solid 4 obviously and maybe either the Portable Ops games or at least the Metal Gear Solid Acid games?

So would i be correct in assuming MGS 4 is actually possible on switch? Hope that's on volume 2. I mean they wouldn't call it volume 1 if a second wasn't planned. If the witcher and Arkham knight are possible then why not MGS 4?

Truegamer79

Megas75

Might as well just get this digital. Disappointing but Konami is gonna Konami. More or less just accepted this happening at this point
@Truegamer79 No reason for it not too. Just a couple of days ago they revealed that they got it running on the 360, and the big reason it's a PS3 exclusive was because of storage space on DVDs.
Evidently nowadays they don't see something like that as an issue anymore

Yeah... I wouldn't accept this even if it were free.

I'm not allocating 60GB of my own storage for this.

I would have gladly paid a bit over AU$100 to have absolutely everything on a 64GB cart (or 32GB cart + a Blu-ray wth the videos).

But I'm not settling for this crap.

I hope for the sake of the PS5 fans that it has everything on a single UHD disc.

@XandertheWise

Peace Walker is the best game in the series, imo.

It's Metal Gear-flavored Monster Hunter.

In the midst of all this physical version drama, I just took a look at the eShop page for the collection as it was in the 'Featured in Direct' page and I'm....confused.

I've heard this collection totals up to around 50GB if you want to grab everything (with the article on here that talked about the physical version stating those numbers as well). However, when I checked each individual game, the file sizes listed only totalled up to around 6GB (this includes the stuff for the gallery, which is supposedly 30GB worth according to Konami). Is there something I'm missing here?

@Fizza Bonus content and videos make for 31GB of the total size, according to that chart above.

However, the chart doesn't make sense. MG1 and 2 should be nowhere near that size, even with whatever emulator Konami is using to run them. The ROMs themselves are about 200KB combined and NES emulators come as small at 1~2MB.

So in all seriousness though will MGS 4 or 5 even be possible on switch? I might believe MGS 4 but not sure about the other one.

FragRed

@Truegamer79 The 4th is technically possible because it’s a PS3 game right? It just depends how messy it was to produce for the complicated hardware that I think will determine how how well it’s ported. The 5th game definitely came out for both Xbox 360 and PS3 so there’s no reason it can’t come to the Switch.

@Cotillion It's because what counts as bonus content is unintuitive. Each game's content is:

  • MGS1 - MGS1, Metal Gear 1+2 (MSX2), digital screenplay book + master book for each of the 3 games
  • MGS2 - MGS2, digital screenplay book + master book for MGS2
  • MGS3 - MGS3, digital screenplay book + master book for MGS3
  • Bonus Content - Metal Gear + Snake's Revenge (NES), First 2 Digital Graphic Novels in video form, digital soundtrack

So basically the digital books are the reason the MGS1, 2 and 3 file sizes are so big. As for what's on the cart, it appears to be: The 2 MSX2 games, the 2 NES games, the books for both and the digital soundtrack

Definitely an awkward approach, would make more sense to have just the games on the cart which would easily fit on a 16GB cart (The HD collection which is the version they're using for MGS2 and 3 is around 8GB total on Xbox 360) then have the books, soundtrack and graphic novel videos be downloads.

@Grumblevolcano Are the graphic novels related to the story in any way? Or are they just a spin-off type of thing? I may end up buying the games separately because of the file size 😅 The only thing I care for in the Bonus Content atm are the NES games but I can live without them.

Add me on switch if you like Xenoblade :)

@Truegamer79 MGS5 was on the PS3 and 360, both Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain

They're the actual Graphic Novels that were released as a digital book on the PSP, fully voiced and everything

The digital graphic novels are a great way to experience the MGS story if you're not into the games' stealth/action gameplay.

Ya I quit caring about "cartridges" about 4 years ago, and my gaming experience has been blissfully stress-free ever since.

Not to say I don't still appreciate a good all-on-cart experience. I'd certainly prefer that if possible. But at the end of the day, it's digital data. Be it stored on a proprietary cartridge that's just a larger micro-SD in disguise you can't write to, or an actual micro-SD.

So volume 2 seems to include MGS4, MGS5 and Peacewalker, and IGN says it is indeed coming to Switch also. That is seriously hype.

MGS4 was a PS3 game released at the start of that generation, while MGS5 was a PS3 game released at the tail end of that generation. People see it as a PS4/X1 game, but it did in fact release on PS3/360.

I have always wanted MGS4 on Switch. And MGS5, for that matter. It's the game that got me into the series after all. I could never get into stealth games until Splinter Cell Blacklist on Wii U. And I adored it. Eventually tried MGS5 on PC and put about 20 hours into it. I'm still not very good at the game, but I had a ton of fun.

This is an epic W for Switch gamers.

Speaking of Splinter Cell, it's unfortunate that Splinter Cell Conviction is stuck on that generation of platforms. Damn you, Ubisoft.
