Thanks - so any moons you accumulate by playing, after let's say you've totaled 999, just won't count? That would make it hard to know how many are still out there!
@Alstil Well, it's not like they replace the Moons in the levels. But unlocking more Moons gets you access to different kingdoms and new costumes. And yes, in theory you could buy your way to 999, unlock everything, even though you only collected 250 Moons.
@Alstil
There is a total of 880 regular moons in the game:
By order of kingdom: 116, 31, 42, 93, 80, 44, 9, 35, 85, 73, 57, 72, 12, 64, 38, 26, 3
You unlock a star on the map screen next to the moons when you have all regular moons in a stage. (Same for collecting all purple coins).
@Octane
No, you unlock something different when you get all regular moons, and you get something else for getting 999 moons.
So even if you buy up to 999 moons you won't get the other bonus if you don't have all regular 880 moons.
Man, the sheep herding mission in the Wooded Kingdom that unlocks in post game is rage inducing! After north of 20 failed attempts I was so angry I smashed the TV remote down so hard it split open, then decided it was time to put down the game for the night...
Somehow the remote still works, so at least there's that.

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@RR529 The weird thing is that everyone is talking about how hard it is, but I only finished it in a few tries. I guess I just got lucky XD
But one thing that did want to make me throw a remote through my TV was the Hidden 2D secret moon in the mushroom kingdom. The one where you have to go through moving 2D planes without turning 3D. I died so much on that that I was ready to quit after about the 20th try, but I somehow managed to do it, and when I did, I was super relieved that I wouldn't have to do it anymore.

@RR529 Rage inducing? Hmmm ... I found it so hilarious (same with every other mission of that kind) that I didn‘t mind but I remember doing those two missions for more than 30 minutes.
@Scrummer I mostly died stupid death, made of my own accord, as I always seemed to forget you couldn‘t re-enter a 2D section after exiting one w/o a pipe. I do look back fondly, though, as it seemed like the second-most creative 2D section in the game .

The Mushroom Kingdom 2D section certainly asks for skills known mostly by 2D Mario veterans, like dashing across single-block spaces and getting extra height by holding the jump button after stomping something.
@Ralizah The coolest thing there that felt criminally underutilized for me was Yoshi and his newfound ability to wall-cling and climb ledges by shooting his tongue at walls. Since when have his hands become sticky too? Throw in the grapple-flowers from Galaxy and we'd have a fully-realized 3D Yoshi. Alas, the most you do with him is just run around and eat fruit, including the short, easy mini-level featuring him.
@meleebrawler This is actually the only 3D Mario game where I actively enjoy playing as Yoshi. I'd love to get a new 3D platformer with him as the main character one day.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
Just finished the endboss yesterday and I am only just over 200 moons, wich excites me a lot and at the same time makes me nervous (still almost 600 to go). But yeah, the game is REALLY good.
The artstyle is sometimes a bit off though, with those realistic things. But overall it looks great, with great music. It even has moody moments, something you wouldn't expect from a Mario.
And those transformations, fun stuff (my favorite so far is the pumpkin)! You have clear objectives in every world, but you can go off the path and explore anywhere. And its great that you don't get kicked out of the level after a moon (that would have been insane, seeing as how many moons there are).
Bosses are also fun, though the endboss didn't excite me as much as I hoped (its a repeat of a earlier boss, sort of). However, I suspect another (maybe better) endboss. I also like the 2D segments, they look great and are fun and you can spot them from a distance. 1 last thing: Its super easy though. However, I may get to the harder stuff now so we'll see!
Post game question how many moons do you have to re-buy to get all the moons. obviously every kingdom has the main purchased moon, but than you can rebuy at any shop? want to get everything else out of the way the last 3 legit moons are recking me and want those to be the last 3 things I do
