Soft-body damage: I don't know if it really would work out well but for a prototype I would try to use soft-body damage (like games as Wreckfest use it) as one of the main features for Mario Kart 9. I would try that because Mario Kart isn't only about racing, it is also about fighting against others.

I feel like Nintendo could get away with putting Tour and Arcade tracks in as a paid DLC if there was another cup with retro tracks in it as well to go with that cup. For re-using retro tracks to get to 16 more retro tracks, here’s how I think it should be done: four of the most popular retro tracks from DS, Wii, 3DS, and WiiU, each one having their own cup. I feel like with the Switch, Nintendo wants to one-up themselves with each sequel for the Switch, so that’s my logic here.

DS Cup:
SNES Choco Island 2
N64 Moo Moo Farm
GBA Sky Garden
GCN Luigi Circuit

Wii Cup:
DS Delfino Square
SNES Ghost Valley 2
GCN DK Mountain
N64 Bowser’s Castle

3DS Cup:
Wii Koopa Cape
DS Waluigi Pinball
GCN Dino Dino Jungle
N64 Koopa Beach

Wii U Cup:
DS Tick Tock Clock
GCN Sherbet Land
Wii Wario’s Gold Mine
N64 Yoshi Valley

Super Mario Maker 2 was a big success on Nintendo Switch due to its ability to create your own stages.
So, i would like to see Mario Kart 9 has an Edit Tool like from Modnation Racers PS3 that we can create your own characters, the tracks and play together Online with our custom tracks.
Honestly, i see Modnation Racers PS3 has more interesting features than Mario Kart games. Nintendo should be aware too because there was a clone of Modnation called Trackmania on PS4.

I've already written a lot about ideas for the future of Mario Kart, but it would be foolish to copy/paste the entire thing over as it's over ten Word pages long. Instead, I'll just highlight old and new track related things.

Retro Tracks

Shell Cup – DS Figure-8 Circuit / GBA Boo Lake / Wii Dry Dry Ruins / WiiU Shy Guy Falls

Banana Cup – 3DS Alpine Pass / GCN Mushroom City / WiiU Sunshine Airport / SNES Koopa Beach 1

Leaf Cup – WiiU Cloudtop Cruise / SNES Donut Plains 2 / 3DS Wuhu Island Loop / GCN Bowser’s Castle

Lightning Cup – N64 Wario Stadium / 3DS Wuhu Mountain Loop / Wii DK’s Snowboard Cross / GBA Rainbow Road

I've got GCN Bowser's Castle there to have some Bowser's Castle rep, with Mushroom City getting in over Wario Colosseum as there's already a Wario retro track, and I'd like to see what they could do with it. Same goes - to a greater degree - for SNES Koopa Beach 1, SNES Donut Plains 2, and GBA Boo Lake. You'll notice that there's only one DS track, and that's because the number of tracks able to be use is running low without brining in the Rainbow Road from that game before the GCN one. Most of the others are personal choice, with both Wuhu tracks getting in for something that comes later.

Now, people have offered a few good ideas to change up the structure of the games, but I've got one that should be easier to manage. Just four cups, but each has ten tracks. Set up in a triangle formation, only the bottom row of four will be available to start, and by completing the two lower points of each individual triangle you'll unlock the top point on the next row up. Now, this does mean the track count is boosted to forty, so that's eight extra tracks from what previous games have offered. If you so wanted, that could be boosted further to fifty with a cup of crossover related tracks.

New Tracks

Mushroom – Luigi’s Balloon World / Craft Island / Wuhu Track 1 [M] / Sunset Snowdrift

Flower – Skylit Heights [M] / Mario Circuit / Chargin’ Chasers / Starshine Sands

Star – Painted Platforms / Wuhu Track 2 [M] / Forgotten Falls / Peach Paradise

Special – Airship Firefleet / Jungle Jitter / Bowser’s Castle / Rainbow Road [M]

Yup, I've concepted a theoretical tracklist of new races for a game. The obvious ones are here such as Mario Circuit (this time being mostly focused inside Peach's Castle), Boswer's Castle (where a giant statue features as part of the track rather than decoration), and Rainbow Road (one singular strip of road that twists and loops to create a feeling of randomness), though there's a few that aren't as obvious.

Luigi's Balloon World traces out two balloons, with a lot of Odyssey-styled balloon decoration around. Craft Island uses Yoshi's Woolly World as a base, though I accept that Crafted World can get some representation with it. Chargin' Chasers is a sports stadium built in the clouds, where racers at one point will go into a clear pipe that breaks through the underside of the clouds to give a view of the ground below. Peach Paradise is a tropical resort that uses paintings to warp between places of the resort. Jungle Jitter is a DK track based on that one level from DKC3.

Skylit Heights is a marathon track where racers will drive around the skyscrapers of New Donk City. Starshine Sands would be based on the Starshine Beach Galaxy of Galaxy 2. Airship Firefleet takes the concept of Airship Fortress and goes further with it, hopping between more than one airship. Painted Platforms would feature various routes around a circuit, with only a few painted in each lap. Forgotten Falls is a celebration of the lost or forgotten aspects of Mario games, with the backdrop being that of the Lost Kingdom of Odyssey. Sunset Snowdrift is a snow-based track with a sunset.

And then there's the two Wuhu Island tracks, which will go to different places than the other two have already been. One such place being Wedge Island - the golf course built on a group of islands. And I've wanted this feature to return from MK7 for MK8, but it didn't, but I want to be able to create custom cups again, with them attached to your profile that anyone yourace against will be able to access. And yes, the reason I want it to return along with the new and old Wuhu Islands tracks is just so I can have a full Wuhu Island cup.

I hope Mario kart 9 comes by 2021. I have so many ideas for it. Like in the battle mode, I think it should keep all of the five modes from Mario kart 8 deluxe and also add a new one. My idea for battle would be called capture the egg. It would be a team game based on capture the flag, but the flags are Yoshi eggs. You have to go capture the other teams egg and take it back to your teams base. Every egg you take from the other team is one point for your team. You also will have to defend your teams egg from the other team too. If you are carrying an egg but are hit by an item, you drop the egg, giving someone else the opportunity to grab it. There can only be two eggs on the course, with one for each team. If the other team takes your teams egg, then another one just spawns back at your teams base. The team that has the most points when time runs out wins. I can imagine that this would be so fun to play online. What do you guys think of this idea? Would you play it?

I kind of hope they’re going the less consistent route with retros. I mean every game (excluding 8 Deluxe) has some retro tracks with themes that are very similar, close together. The whole Shell cup in DS was circuits except Moo Moo Farm, and still, it was all grass. It also had 5 retro circuits, two of those being Luigi Circuits. The Wii has the least consistent lineup with 3 Mario Circuits, 2 beach tracks, 2 jungle tracks, 2 Peach tracks, 2 DK tracks, and 2 Bowser’s Castles. 7 wasn’t bad with this, it’s just that a lot of the tracks had a beach summer vacation vibe, but didn’t really feel too similar. In 8, the only thing I can say is that Donut Plains 3 and Royal Raceway feel very similar, but that’s just a stretch, and it’s probably just me. I do hope that Wario Colosseum is brought back as DLC though because a stadium and colosseum are kind of similar in theme, but that’s a little bit of a stretch.

@SuperSpaghetti Well there was the no retro repeats rule until the MK8 DLC. Choices were probably made with longevity of the franchise in mind while keeping the rule active.

I would love a track from the excellent Dojo and the Pygmy or Mylo the myopic mouse. These 2 classics would definitely provide inspiration for a great track

I can’t for the life of me understand why they didn’t use Figure-8 Circuit in 8. Maybe they thought it was too similar to Mario Kart Stadium and both Mario Circuits? It would’ve been taken the place of Cheep Cheep Beach though and I love that track (it’s so underrated) so I’m kind of glad they didn’t use it. Yikes at that DS (and SNES but it gets a pass) selection (besides BC and RR of course)... also wasn’t Peach Circuit in DS lol.

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if I'm just repeating what others have already said but I believe Mario Kart 8 Deluxe pretty much borders on perfection.

Other than a selection of new tracks I can't think any many ways it can be improved.

I'd obviously buy game regardless but my wish list would be at least 25 - 30 new tracks. A selection of retro tracks but preferably ones we haven't already seen in the retro section on previous MK instalments.

Lastly some kind of (optional) story mode in the mold of Diddy Kong Racing

@SuperSpaghetti Yeah, GBA Peach Circuit was in MKDS. Removed it from the list.

I have an idea to build on this. 12 characters, 4 teams, 3 on each team in a box stadium. You drive around with the goal of capturing a flag from an opposing team. Bumping another driver gives you that team’s flag. Going to your team’s area puts the flag in your team’s numbers. It’s inspired by the capture the flag I used to play in gym class.

Another idea: battle royale race. This one is inspired by TWD98’s video. Basically, getting hit or falling off sidelines you. And you’re racing against 99 other people online.

Youtuber ThatSRB2Dude mentioned that, maybe Nintendo could be planning on releasing a new game like Splatoon 3 or Mario Kart 9 with the the Switch Pro(whatever the new version will be) later this year. He was just tossing ideas around. So, he wasn't making a prediction, just thinking outloud & speculating. Interesting idea, though.

-Anyone that doesn't know, ThatSRB2Dude makes Splatoon related videos (and he plays Splatoon competitively).
