@Dezzy post puts it to rest. Motion controls are optional, so it can indeed be played in handheld.

I posted it before.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't they have needed to adjust the controls in Sunshine to accommodate the analog trigger in the original?

So they must've gone in there and changed controls to some extent. Which means they can surely get Galaxy running on handheld too. Just give us a button that represents shaking the wiimote and then put the pointer onto the touchscreen. Easy enough? That's how the Dolphin emulator handles it, and it works perfectly (mouse pointer not touchscreen in that case)

@Dezzy Yeah, Sunshine uses analog triggers for FLUDD, the Switch doesn't have those. I think they just removed that part. Can't see them doing it any other way.

@Dezzy Yes, Super Mario Sunshine uses the analogue triggers so they have changed that for this port, too. Optional motion controls is actually good news for those that hate them.

Super Mario 64

– Docked: 960 x 720
– Handheld: 960 x 720

Super Mario Sunshine

– Docked: 1920 x 1080
– Handheld: 1280 x 720

Super Mario Galaxy

– Docked: up to 1920 x 1080
– Handheld: up to 1280 x 720

@BlueOcean OPTIONAL motion controls are great. The NA site made it sound like they're required, though, and Nintendo has a history of forcing non-optional motion controls into their games.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Another one of the descriptions on the UK site says:

"Mario blasts off on an intergalactic quest to help Rosalina and save Princess Peach from Bowser’s assault of astronomical proportions. Defy gravity and hop across planets with optional motion controls, or pass a Joy-Con controller to a friend for some extra help in Co-Star Mode!"

Oh thank God if confirmed. Nintendo has done an incredible job of giving players the option to.play Switch games however they want (ARMS comes to mind). It would seem extremely absurd for them to limit Super Mario Galaxy to just Joy-Cons just because.

God first.

@Ralizah Switch can't even handle Mario 64 in 1080p.

No seriously, any reason why the resolution is lower than Sunshine and Galaxy? It's still higher than whatever that smudge the N64 produced, but that's weird.

@Ralizah I agree, I don't like motion controls for platformers. Why is Super Mario 64 720p on TV? LOL The lack of widescreen in Super Mario 64 is said to be related to the pop-in. You can see it in Super Mario 64 widescreen hacks but they could have fixed it. Can't Nintendo fix their own games? Widescreen for Super Mario Sunshine is great because it was 4:3 on GameCube. That's the highlight of this very lazy collection, in my opinion.

@MarioBrickLayer Yeah, the joy-cons are required for optional motion controls and two-player mode in Super Mario Galaxy as I posted earlier.

On the Wii U, the modders just made it so that you can't run while shooting fludd, so when you stand still, you use the analog stick to control its distance. That works fine in 99% of cases, although I seem to remember there are a few cases where it helps if you can run and shoot simultaneously, so Nintendo will probably make it so you can run and shoot a standard amount. I imagine that would do the trick.

lmfao Super Mario 64 is only being presented at 720p in TV mode and they didn't even bother to fix the pop in from the original game in the process of remastering it while they gave the full on widescreen HD treatment to the other two games and straight up omitted Galaxy 2

Some remaster we have here lol

@Dezzy Walking and shooting water is useful for cleaning so I'm sure that Nintendo found a way to make it work.

It probably means it's being emulated. It's often hard to change the aspect ratio of old stuff like that because it's built into how the game handles "culling", so they'd need to go into the original code and change that if they wanted it in widescreen.

So my guess is they don't have the original code anymore so they're just emulating it.

@Dezzy on the Wii u you could run and fludd. Half press was holding the L and shooting with Rz.
Full press was just Rz

Banjo-

@Dezzy I think that they do but they're just being lazy. They probably put the Wii U N64 emulator with Super Mario 64 in here.

@status-204 Nintendo should have ported it properly like any other developer does.

I was really hoping for super Mario 64 widescreen options as well as scanlines

@Dezzy I completely forgot about that. For a moment I thought that running and shooting was still possible on Switch, and fully pressing the button halting your movement. But no, that's also analog technically. On the GameCube the controller registered the amount you pressed the button and changed the water output accordingly, and fully pressing it made you stand still. Even running around with a fixed amount of water and standing still when fully pressed is not possible on the Switch. That didn't fully register until now...

Octane

@status-204 Yeah, that makes sense. But I guess that's all the more evidence that Nintendo barely touched the games.
