@nikben You're right. I see the same issue. That may be normal. When I get to controller #5, it won't let me sync it as a half joycon. But then again, I personally don't know any games that support 5+ players using half joycons. Not all games support half joycons, only some games. I know Virtua Racing supports up to 8 players, but I don't know if that supports half joycons.
Which game do you want to play that supports 5+ players? I think there are two games in the Switch library that support 8 players. (anyone is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong)
The game I was having trouble with was Wrestledunk Sports. It will not register player 4-8 correctly. I solved my issue by starting an 8-player game in Super Bomberman R and letting that game take control of my joycons. I closed the game and the joycons still had the correct settings. I then started WS and got all 8 players connected.
Other games I have purchased for 8-player sessions: Shipped, Mario Strikers (not tested yet), Clusterpuck99 (favourite), Luigis Mansion (not bought for the 8-player part of the game really) and Bafl.
It’s most likely a problem with the way the game itself was programmed rather than it being an issue with the console itself (seeing as you’ve had no problem connecting to Super Bomberman R).
8 individual Joy-Cons would be fine either way, but more than four players with Joy-Con pairs wouldn’t be supported as the console would then have to accommodate up to 16 separate Bluetooth devices, and the Switch wouldn’t have enough bandwidth to accommodate that.
I have not tried to connect more than 8 single joycons. The problem is that my console always treats the jocons 5-8 as two pairs instead of singles. I can connect them in the opposite order, and the same happens with the last four to be connected. You might be right that it is a problem with the game since Bomberman can handle it. If I start Wrestledunk Sports without Bomberman first it only allows me to connect "4 singles and two pairs". It is still a pity Nintendo did not anticipate that Switch-owners would like to have as many people connected as possible.
I have plenty of good 4-player games, but 8 players is more scarse. I also have Sausage Sports Club, but I never got into that really. I have considered getting a second Switch on the second hand market for Killer Queen Black....but that seems a bit....flamboyant, maybe...oh to have friends who like to invest in game-gadgets....
