Hello everybody, I am new here. I was checking out the Nintendo Switch online subscription for $20.00 a year which is, in my opinion, an awesome price. However, I was wondering: If I get the subscription, will I always be online, wherever I go? Like, I can bring it anywhere and always have connection? Or do I get the subscription, only to be able to play online when there is free WiFi or my WiFi.
Nintendo Switch Online does not allow you to be online at all times. You have to provide your own Internet connection via Wi-Fi or wired connection.
Edit: Someone answered before me. However, it's also worth mentioning that you can play the NES or SNES games without a connection, but only if you open the corresponding app while connected to the Internet at least once every seven days.
@MarioMan97 Supplimenting to what's already been said.
Nintendo Switch Online gives you access to:
online gaming like for Mario Kart 8, Splatoon, etc. (NSO is not needed to play online for free-to-play games like Fortnite, Rocket League, etc.)
game saves cloud back up
NSO classic game's library: NES, SNES (and gameboy, I think?)
Mario Kart 8's expansion tracks, and Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, and possibly something else. You'll only have access to these thing while your subscribed.
(N64 games require the pricier NSO expansion)
Regarding "being online every where you go": You can always disable the switch's wifi via airplane mode. Which is nice if you want handheld battery to last bit longer. It's not a huge power saving, but it helps.
However, it's also worth mentioning that you can play the NES or SNES games without a connection, but only if you open the corresponding app while connected to the Internet at least once every seven days.
I don't think you have to actually open the app every seven days, the Switch just has to have been connected to the internet at some point in the last seven days.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

I can speak from experience. You have to open the individual apps while online to play them once every seven days. Just connecting to the internet does nothing. You have to open each and every classic game app while online.
@GameOtaku Hmm, I'm sure there have been times when I've been on holiday for a week without internet and been able to use the NSO apps even if I hadn't opened them while connected to the internet within the last week. I don't know the exact rules on for how that works, Nintendo's website is a bit ambiguous about it.

Last time I had a month sub you had to open each app. I had opened the nes one but not the snes one and during the middle of the week could play the nes games but when I tried the snes app it wanted to check.
