Topic: Handheld or dock?

70% of the time will be docked, but when I will use it undocked when I get home after work and want to spend time with my family, in vacation, and if I want to play while on my bed.

Flexibility rocks.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The best feature of the Wii U in my opinion was the off tv play. Whenever the mrs was watching some dull costume drama I could fire up Mario Kart and play a few courses without causing any arguments about the tv. The beauty of the Switch is how versatile it is. Play on the tv, stick it on the dining room table, hold it on my lap. I've heard rumours that a second dock would be quite expensive but add to the mix the ability to dock upstairs on the bedroom tv as well and I'm sold. I probs won't take it out of the house apart from maybe for flights a couple of times a year.

@Deadlysub I'm also buying it as a second console as well. Because the Switch is going to have a lack of hardcore games cater to the series and hardcore gamers. So even though I'm an old school Nintendo gamer I'm more so a serious hardcore gamer.

I mean if they invest they're time and energy into serious gamers as well, I would probably use this as my main console.

Majority of the time mine will be docked. The only time I'm using it hand held is when I'm going on a road trip, or taking a flight. Other than that it will be doctor and I'm going to consider it more so of a Home console than a portable handheld console.

Predominantly it will be used in it's dock but it will be kind of cool to be able to take it away from the house occasionally

@skywake For me it is not a replacement for my 3DS. While I really do love the fact that the switch is basically a WiiU that you can actually take with you places (I absolutely LOVE that about it, and have always wished the WiiU could do it, so I definitely WILL be taking my Nintendo Switch out and about with me). However , I wouldn't go as far as saying that it could ever replace my 3DS. (3DS is much more portable than the switch, and the vulnerability of the exposed open tablet screen does worry me on the switch in ways I know my 3DS will never have that problem. So 3DS is still my handheld of choice.(and will remain so for many years to come). I will be using my Switch most of the time at home on the TV like I did my WiiU, but will have the advantage of being able to continue playing those games when I go places.

As for will it replace my WiiU, the truth is it depends on whether the switch lets you do digital console transfers that port all my WiiU games to the switch (in the way that you could for Wii games on the WIiiU). If you can, then obviously there will be no need to use the actual WiiU console for playing WiiU games, as it will all be nicely integrated on one system. But if you can't, I'll definitely be keeping my wiiU (and playing it regularly) -As there are still so many games I'm addicted to on that system, that I've nowhere near finished completing. (Hyrule Warriors probably being the top of that list! -but there are quite a few others too!)

Another reason for this, is there are quite a few family favorites of WiiU games that me and my daughter play on every weekend, and while we'll both be getting a switch also, alot of those WiiU games we're not about to give up anytime soon! So I'm hoping that the Switch does support the WiiU to Switch console transfers, because that'll certainly solve alot of the problems associated with which console is going to be plugged into the TV. (however, one caveat is that it will mean only being able to play downloaded versions of the WiiU games, as obviously the Switch does not have a CD drive for any of the boxed games we have). But this will be an advantage for Nintendo, because it will mean many of us will be repurchasing them in digital form that way, so is nice easy money for them if they're smart.

I always have this intention to keep using old hardware when I get something new. I inevitably find myself putting the old stuff in a box before long. Maybe that's just me. As it is I intend to keep using my 3DS and Wii U but I just know that I'm going to fold pretty quickly. They'll end up in a box or on a shelf.

As for the bit about the Switch not replacing the 3DS specifically. That's the popular one. And maybe people use the 3DS in a different way than I do but I can't see the Switch being any less portable. I have a 3DS XL and I always put it in a carrying case if I'm taking it somewhere. I'll do the same with the Switch and once you take into account the extra bulk of a case? It's not going to be that much bigger. Plus if I'm going anywhere with my 3DS it's usually in a bag or on a car seat where the size gap between the 3DS and the Switch isn't a big deal.

People who play their 3DS on busses and trains? I can see them thinking the size difference is a deal breaker. I sometimes carried my 3DS in my pocket purely for streetpass, I wouldn't carry the Switch in the same way. But even when I did carry my 3DS like that I never played it while I was out. I've never played a portable console on public transport.

Both. The last 18 months most of my gaming has been on the 3DS*. I couldn't count the times I've wished I could and kick back on the couch with Fire Emblem or Etrian or whatever beamed to the TV. On the other hand I couldn't count the times I've looked at the 3DS and wished the graphics were a little more refined.

The Switch promises home console quality graphics on my portable, and portable quality games on my TV. Assuming the Switch gets support from 3DS publishers and developers (hello Atlus!), and there's every reason to assume it will, it'll be the perfect device for me.

  • For context... I have all generations of the XBox, SNES, GC, Wii, GB SP, GB Micro, DS Lite, DSi, Playstation and Dreamcast. I've hated the XB1 since day 1, to the point where I almost lost interest in gaming altogether before rediscovering the love with DS and 3DS. I haven't switched it on in over a year. I had zero interest in the Wii U thanks to the Fisher Price GamePad.

I probably will only have it docked at my house, but if I happen to be traveling in some capacity you better believe I'm going to take advantage of how portable it is. It's been a pain having to cart all those cords just to bring previous consoles with me. Of course, undocked also works great for a good poop.

I know exactly what you mean about the being boxed up phenomenon of older consoles we intend to play. (I'm pretty sure my NES Classic Edition will suffer this fate).-Mainly because there are only so many consoles you can keep hooked up to the TV in one go, due to the number of HDMI sockets, etc. The 3DS not needing a TV means that this is never a problem to have two on the go, so I do know for certain that my 3DS will remain my most used system even when my Switch is in use. If the Switch lets me do a WiiU and Wii system transfer, then obviously I will no longer need to use the WiiU console anymore. But if not, then the NES Classic will get unhooked from the TV and boxed up so that I can have both my WiiU and Switch as the two consoles that are permanently hooked up to the TV. (game selection is very simple then, as with a simple flick of a remote control, I can then play whichever I want on demand like I do now with the current two that are hooked up).

I completely agree with you about the fact that the Swicth and the 3DS won't be that different in size when inside a carry case. The only reason I say I prefer my 3Ds for portable use more, is because there are many times when I don't want to carry my laptog bag with me just to have my console handy. The 3DS fits nicely in my jacket pocket without even needing the case (which is what won't be so easy to do with a switch tablet, in a non-vulnerable way). -I wouldn't ever dare bringing that with me without a case. So the Switch will be used more for journeys where I don't mind lugging my laptop bag about with me, and my 3DS for everything else where I prefer to travel light.

hahaha. Glad it's not just me that does stuff like that! (Puts a whole new meaning to the term, "I'll be out in a minute, I'm just playing Wind Waker!!") **cheeky grin***

(hmm... I wonder if that's how it first got its name?)

Both, I see myself definitely using it as both a home and portable console, I am one not to prioritize myself with to many games at once because it ruins the immersion for me, which is why when I had my Wii U and 3DS I tended to not play one of the other if I was to immersed in one game, this console is perfect for me so I don't have to start to many games, just undock it and go and play the same game.

Yeah, especially Zelda games! (it just gets way too confusing trying to remember what you've done and what you've not done if you have large gaps between playing). I did that once and regretted it. (it was easier just to start again from scratch). For all the ones I've played though, I makes sure to keep detailed item and heart container checklists, so that I can tick check off as I go. (of course that's on;y possible on Zelda games I've played through at least once, so for new ones, there's now way I'd ever come off them to start another game. (as tempting as it can be sometimes when fun new games come out). But I totally agree, the experience is a million times better when you're playing through properly from start to finish. The addict in me doesn't stop me from buying new gamnes though while I'm playing, I just tend to have alot that sit there waiting for when I've truly finsihed playing all my favorites through. There are still quite a few Wii and WiU games that I've bought and never played yet due to this fact. So I think you've taken the most sensible approach. (I just wish i had your willpower to resist buying new games that I get quite excited about!)

I'd like to think I'd play docked more... However, I may end up just playing mobile most of the time with my busy schedule. D=
