Topic: Fortnite is taking away time from other games

Fortnite is taking away time from just about every other online game out there, and while it may be bringing in tons of new gamers to the shooter genre in a kid friendly way, is this truly good for other games like Splatoon, and other FPS games on other consoles? Not to mention the battle pass system is restricting time gamers on able to spend on other games they enjoy more, just to get their money's worth. What do you guys think on this topic?

Well then stop playing it. Your heart won't stop if you don't reach a certain rank in a game.

@Yosheel I like playing it though, it's fun too play with my friends, but I want to play when I want too, not when epic wants me too. They've built a loop so that no one ever stops buying the battle pass, so that no one ever stops playing, so it always stays revelant. It makes me question whether the battle pass is worth it. But ragnorak looks to good to pass up!

I bought the SSN4 pass when there was 18 days left, earned 1000 vbucks, then waited for the new season. Now I play it 1-3 times a week about an hour each time. I'm at 900 vbucks and tier 40 or something, with 6 weeks left in this season. Like Yosh said, just play something else. You're burning yourself out.

I don't mind the news, makes it convenient to get my other news and any updates on fortnite in one place. No different than updates on games i'm not concerned with. I just scroll down.

Do you enjoy playing it? Then play it.
Is playing it a detriment to your health, family, or friends? Then don't play it.
Do you prioritize playing it over things you would otherwise routinely do? Then don't play it.

You're describing Epic as though they nefariously invented an evil time suck. And you're right! That's what a company would want from a game that thrives on micro transactions; an engaging feature set and content vault that is constantly updated and rotated. It's okay to still enjoy the game, though. It sounds like you're enjoying it, so don't feel bad about that as long as it's not out of the ordinary.

I'm not really sure what other advice there is, other than Yorumi's suggestion of varying your options.

Just pick and choose your time and day and game of the day and you will be better for it.

As long as you have fun, just play it. Backlog will grow but we don’t play games just to finish them, right? Just play whatever you want, there is no issue in spending most of your time on one game.

I get you. Tbqh I'm fully done with Fortnite. The game is going in the right direction but the sheer repetitiveness is becoming a drag and all the latest events don't actually require that much effort to pull off, some voice acting and some changes to the map. Can we get something completely different to another survive the storm or event that runs of cooldowns. I kinda want horde bash back or some form of raid in one of the previous two events the last mission we had to search areas and encountered three mini bosses at the same time that was awesome and something that should be a permanent feature or part of the raid.

The games that I play are: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Arms, Zelda: BotW, Mario Odyssey, Sonic Mania. I have finally 100%'d all of them!

I’m the same way OP. Actually sold my Xbox and bought a switch about a year ago because I’m always on the move with my daughter (year and a half old). I told myself I was just going to play games like Zelda and Mario, but here I am playing fortnite every day lol I don’t hate that I play it. I enjoy it. I was terrible at first and now I can do well in about every match. My internet on my side of the house is bad so I play with my pro controller and put my switch on a stand in the kitchen. If you don’t play with a pro controller you’re missing out.
I’m a newer Nintendo guy though so the games that aren’t very appealing the eyes don’t draw me in. I think I have 8 games right now. I’ve put a ton of time into Mario kart, and 40ish hour into Zelda.

At first I thought this topic was about how Fortnite seems to dominate the news feed on every gaming site, and I was about to agree. I hate visiting, say, Gamespot and seeing ten stories in a row about Fortnite. I don't play the game, and I really don't care to (competitive multiplayer is not my thing), so I'm annoyed how it pushes other gaming news off the front page.

But I see the topic is about a player complaining about how playing a game he enjoys is taking time away that he could use playing other games, and I'm like, what the hell is he complaining about?

@Mountain_Man Your take is correct, the whole point of the forum is that its taking away time from other games, and the news is one of those points, my comment was one way it's taking over, yours is another. So to be honest, your comment is more on track than any other reply in this forum

But, but, but, Fortnite is "freeee!"

There was a graph somewhere showing how much fortnite had stole the audience of all the other online games as well. It was pretty insane. It's basically destroyed Overwatch and League of Legends (according to the data I've seen)

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

NEStalgia

And this is the problem with online games. There's only so much audience at once looking for an online game, and most of that audience will flock to whatever ones are most popular, and the rest are left with little reason to exist.

@Dezzy Well it's free. You need a console and an internet connection, nothing else. There's a fair chance it'll eat into the Splatoon 2 community when the paid online service launches in September.

And I can't figure out why. From what I've seen, it looks to be a fairly standard multiplayer shooter with a survival/building gimmick and below-average graphics. I mean, sure, it's probably a fun game, but I don't know why it has so captured the gaming industry's attention.

The building everywhere and destroy everything mechanic is more than just a gimmick, it's a deep part of Fortnite's gameplay. Like other innovations such as the skydive to an openworld and the storm.

Everything combined makes for a modern and fresh take on the genre, extremely similar to Splatoon. Can't call this a fad when everything points to really solid and fresh gameplay.

If the game cost £25 and also needed an online subscription, it wouldn't be where it is now. The free-to-play model is what has propelled it beyond anything else.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@Yorumi I wasn't around much when WoW really hit the scene (I was way too young and didn't hang out on the Internet much, plus I was busy playing RuneScape back then lol), but a big reason why fads blow up is marketing. The Wii had some great marketing, Fortnite had some huge marketing especially with that crossover with Infinity War, etc.

Good marketing makes bad games sell unfortunately. Now I'm not saying Fortnite and WoW are bad games (I barely played them so I have no real opinion), but when you see things like Star Wars Battlefront II 2017 still selling 7m+ copies even despite the bad press of lootbox stuff, it is what it is.

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
