Soon I am going to be buying my first Nintendo system. It is going to be the Switch and I will buy it after the next Direct. I am wondering what 3 games should I buy and maybe what accessories are nice to get too?
@Tigerhoodman Glad to hear! My top three recs do depend on if you have a Wii U or not, or anything really. If this is your first ever console then it’s easy to determine your choices.
First three picks... Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are the seminal favourites for most.
For RPGs exclusively I’d recommend Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Dragon Quest XI S, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
If you’re a casual gamer who wants a relaxing experience; Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Stardew Valley are both superb picks.
Since it's your first Nintendo console you may as well just go to the big franchises. If it's just three then Mario Kart and Smash Bros are flat out great fun and Zelda Breath Of The Wild is the premium OMG game.
There's a few others like Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter which alot of people love but not for me personally. Plus there is Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Ring Fit Adventure, Pikmin 3, Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario + Rabbids and Arms are some other great games from Nintendo you may want to consider too.
@Tigerhoodman
Games: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Mario Odyssey Zelda Breath of the Wild
If you like first person shooters, Splatoon 2 is epic. Don't let the family friendly look fool you. I'm so glad my friend nagged me to try it. It's amazing.
** Get a tempered glass screen protector. Nintendo favored a material that won't shatter/crack if you drop the console (because, kids😉). It's a high quality plastic, which looks fine, there's nothing wrong with how it looks, but it doesn't have the scratch resistance we're accustomed to having on modern phones/tablets.
** Nintendo Support has good directions & troubleshooting for most everything - a very good resource. This should be the first place you search if you have questions for how to set up your console, nintendo account, how to upgrade micro sd card (if needed). https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/contact
Super Mario Odyssey
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
They're all great starter games and they are all different genres, which is why I picked those three. There's even more games that I'd consider essential, like these:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Splatoon 2
And like @WoomyNNYes mentioned, there's the Pro Controller. Although it's rather expensive, it's a really good, quality controller and it's my preferred controller for playing my Switch games on the TV.
Super Mario Odyssey (or a physical copy Super Mario 3D All-Stars if you can find it, to play the classics).
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Smash Bros Ultimate (gives you an introduction to Nintendo's wide array of properties, so you can see if any franchises catch your eye).
Otherwise everything Xenoblade is fantastic (XC2 is my favorite, but you can't go wrong with XC:DE either. Torna is directly related to XC2, so you may want to play XC2 first if you want to play Torna), as are Astral Chain, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Zelda: Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3, Super Mario 3D World, & Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (especially if you're into multiplayer for that last one).
@Tigerhoodman Ok first off, Welcome to the addiction that is nintendo games, welcome to the franchises like, Mario, zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, And so much more, Any of the choices above are amazing and you can't go wrong with one.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

Sorry for not being active much recently, but I’m very much alive!
My top three Switch exclusive recommendations would be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Bayonetta 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. Your first accessory should be a micro sd card 200GB or larger because even if you're all digital, most physical Switch releases have been post-patched. Then your second accessory should be either an official Pro controller or an 8bitdo N30 Pro 2 controller, depending on if you prefer your analog sticks level or offset.
Unless you intend to buy a Switch Lite?
Then purchasing a controller would be pointless.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,247 games (as of April 15th, 2024)

While Smash Bros. Ultimate is a must-have, I wouldn't particularly recommend as an immediate purchase to Nintendo newcomers. Smash earns its place by virtue of its integration of so many characters etc. Newcomers are unlikely to appreciate a massive aspect of Smash. I'd say it can wait until you've got a good few months/years of Nintendo IP under your belt.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
I'd second most of the recommendations above, particularly the Zeldas and Marios, and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. I'd also say Pokemon Sword/Shield is worth a try if a monster-collecting RPG sounds appealing to you.
If you're tolerant of / would be interested in playing any older games, I'd also recommend trying out a month or two of Nintendo Switch Online, if only to try the collection of SNES games that they provide for free. The selection that they offer is pretty comprehensive - covering most of the big-hitters from that system's library - so it's a good way to sample some of Nintendo's history.
Start with the classics (series and specific entries)!
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Mario Odyssey
Mario Kart 8 or Super Smash Bros depending on what you think you would prefer.
I would second it being worth at least a trial of the Nintendo Online service to see how much you enjoy playing NES and SNES games (you'll probably get the most out of the latter). Also, to the point about Smash being more enjoyable knowing Nintendo history ... sure, that could be true, but Smash (or even Mario Kart) could also serve as a great introduction to a bunch of Nintendo history!
Then lots of awesome series/games to go to from there!
