@Ralizah @JaxonH of course that is a fair point and I’m not overly bothered by it as I enjoyed fates mostly, just stating what I figured happened. It’s funny though because I personally feel it was more the vehicle (3DS) and making it less centered on perma death that helped more than anything to make awakening a success. As we have all noted Awakening didn’t really do very much that was new, but it was that perfect storm. I’m just happy the series continues on since I’ve been a fan for decades.

I also think Awakening benefitted from the expansion and adoption of the internet.

Sure, internet was around prior to 2013, but it's use for leisure wasn't nearly as prevalent. It wasn't until the advent of smartphones and their mass explosion onto the scene around 2010 that everyone, their mom and their dog had immediate access to the internet in their pockets 24/7. And Fire Emblem Awakening was the first game in the series to launch in that brave new world.

This, I believe, helped spread awareness. Granted, internet alone isn't enough. You also have to have a game that looks appealing and grabs peoples' attention at first glance. The previous entry, Shadow Dragon, wasn't exactly an eye-catcher. But Awakening, with it's snazzy new art style, gorgeous 3D visuals with classic 2D sprites on the map, vivid colors and amazing box art, was a real head-turner.

Compound all of that with the release of a demo- another thing previous entries couldn't benefit from, and the positive reactions to it from gaming media which was spread by the now-widely-available internet, and you had the perfect storm for success.

I'd think that if they'd ever made a new Fire Emblem game for the DS, that might have been the breakthrough one instead, because the platform was immensely popular and well suited for turn based tactics gameplay.

It just got two remakes though, one of which didn't even get an English translation. So, it was left for Awakening after a nervous five year gap between it and the previous entry on the Wii.

Obviously, FE3, FE11 and FE12 were all essentially remakes/reimaginings/expanded versions of the original Fire Emblem. So they're also represented by Marth. And FE15 was a remake of FE2, so that one is represented by Celica.

I admit, my impressions for this when I (finally) watched the Nintendo Direct on my own time amounted to "What?" Subsequent trailer viewings have made me more optimistic though. I don't mind how bold the new protagonist looks, and I definitely want more info before passing judgment. Still....Before the Direct basically confirmed this was a main series title, I thought at first that they were setting up a new mobile game or another FE Musou more in the vein of the first Fire Emblem Warriors. I'm not sure yet how I feel about randomly introducing other FE protagonists from other universes, though to be fair this isn't the first time this has happened in the series.

Time will tell how I feel about this one. Besides, I'm one of the crazy souls who still hasn't played Three Houses despite owning the title for almost a year now.

i had to give up on Fire Emblem for awhile when they released that one game for the 3DS which was Fire Emblem Fates.

They split Fate in 3 separate games. Two went to retail while the other one you had to buy from the eshop.

What they did was unnecessary and a waste. Why they had to do that, who knows.

Im slowly trying to get back into the Fire Emblem series by trying to get ahold of Three Houses and only that game and thats it . I think I had enough of the overhyped nonsense of Fire Emblem

After barely getting started shortly after getting the game (which I believe was the Christmas of the year of 3H's release), I drifted away from the game for... yeesh, two and a half years now? I did resume a few months ago though.

My first FE game was Fates Conquest on 3DS, and I love it, but I never really felt like getting another. I bought Three Houses when I got my switch last year, and I once again fell in love. I’m sure the new one will draw me in the same way. I’m really interested in how they’re tying all the games together.

@DarthNocturnal Quite a time gap! Hopefully you recalled some of what was going on. I don't plan to play through all routes consecutively, but I do intend to finish each playthrough before moving on to something else...unless I get very bored. That has yet to happen to me with a Fire Emblem entry, though Shadow Dragon came close.

I was in chapter 1. Not much to recall.

"We got a teacher shortage. Show these upstarts and rogues how to hold a sword, will ya?"

I'll be content if I get one route done. Fire Emblems can take a while to complete, and even with NG+, I'd probably get burnt out. And I've got more Switch backlog besides, including a few other large RPGs, like Xenoblade 1 & 2.

Fire Emblem Three Houes its main story where your main enemy bad guys are some corrupt Church and i guess the Church people dabble in evil magic theyre not supposed to like in Final Fantasy Tactics.

thats great and neat but at the same the makers of Three Houses want you to spend hours et to be a teacher to recruit and train students to be soldiers whether its ground knights or soldiers on horses etc.

Are we supposed to play a Fire Emblem game here or are we actually ending up playing a Fire Emblem game that ends up more like redoing the same crap in Persona 3 and Persona 4? the whole calendar year time limit etc?

Every Fire Emblem is a banger.

Awakening is still, to this day, one of my favorite games of all time.

Fates is probably the worst in the series. I LOVED the multiple routes, story premise and the gameplay is easily, easily the pinnacle of the series, especially in Conquest. Unfortunately the drab characters and ridiculous story brought down what should have been the best game in the series.

Shadows of Valentia was excellent. A little old school, with uninteresting maps as a result and more basic combat, but it had an incredible story and top shelf characters. Overall, solid 8/10

Three Houses... the best Fire Emblem since Awakening, and a good argument can be made for best in the entire series.

Engage looks like a return to Awakening's style, and I'm loving it. I always preferred that art style, but Engage takes it to another level entirely. Never has FE been so colorful and full of life. The Emblem rings are an interesting mechanic, especially considering the trailer showed the villain putting on a ring. If they can summon past series villains, this game is going to go off the rails, and I'm here for it!

@XandertheWise
The sim elements were one of the most widely praised aspects of Fire Emblem Three Houses. And I agree with the consensus- they were excellent.

But they also give you the option of skipping all of that and having it automatically assign training for you. The game literally lets you enjoy it however you want.

The pre-GBA Fire Emblem games I tried out were all pretty boring, tbh. So was the one on NDS.

Fates is def. the worst of the modern Emblems. Birthright felt like a worse version of Awakening, and Conquest had the dumbest writing I've ever seen in a video game. I was so disappointed I actually sold off my Special Edition. Thank god that era of the series is over.

I have a physical copy of Birthright, but never got around to "assembling" the whole game of Fates. And now that may never happen, barring a re-release that may not happen for an eon...

Shadows of Valentia isn't quite as out of reach. Physical copies are already getting jacked up prices though. Probably won't be getting the season pass, but at least the main game should still be obtainable somehow (even if I need to sell a limb...)

Come to think of it, I never got all of Awakening's DLC either. Sheesh, so much lost with this shop closure...

I've played every other localized FE though (and dabbled in a few fan translations, although I usually didn't complete them). Started with 7 way back in the day. That and the Tellius games were probably my favorite pre-Awakening entries.

@DarthNocturnal I just did some digging, and physical copy prices aren't awful. They're very close to the original list.

And I agree with you completely. So much is being lost with this eShop closure. I've never played any of the FE DLC, but it's also so easy to forget how much is being lost. I hope they do something to really preserve a lot of these in the future. An ultimate edition of Fates would be insane.

Im still a little iffy on Three Houses. I just want to play a normal game. not a frikking copycat of the whole social stat raising nonsense like from Persona 3 and Persona 4

XandertheWise

DarthNocturnal

@ElRoberico

Yeah, last I checked they're sitting at "more then a 3DS game, less then a Switch game". But I've seen far worse. I feel bad for anyone tracking down the Tellius games.

All-in-one versions of every 3DS FE would be awesome. Maybe add Blazing Sword and Sacred Stones to NSO if GBA ever gets added, too.

@DarthNocturnal $40 US seems to be what I've seen.

I hope they do GBA on NSO, and it would be incredible to see those two, plus Binding Blade.

I just checked, and it's around $60 CAD up here. Which is... maybe $10 or so higher then MSRP was (and for what I believe is a new copy, no less)? Definitely not a huge difference. Maybe I was thinking about when the eShop finally closes, and was worried that prices might spike after that (which they might).
