Mario, of course!

He has been my favorite character since my childhood and he's the reason why I'm a gamer in the first place. I grew up in a Nintendo household, so it's no wonder I had plenty of Mario-related memories. Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, and Super Mario 64 were some of my favorite games ever when I was young, and I still love them today. I also really enjoyed the more recent games like Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Odyssey.

So that's one of the reasons - many of his platforming adventures are really, really good. Mario might not be the most developed character out there, but that's okay. I like many of the power-ups Mario can find throughout the games, and I really like how agile he can be. That's the result of him being so dang fun and intuitive to control! I like his personality too. He's so cheerful, courageous, and fun-loving...a somewhat minor detail but it still makes me happy inside. It's the little things, you know? I just really like how upbeat he can be!

All that is what makes Mario my favorite Nintendo character. Actually scratch that - he's my favorite character of all time!

Pokey/Porky comes to mind. In Earthbound he's basically Cartman from South Park, but in Mother 3 his character gets some great development. He's a villain I genuinely pity.

Oh and I like Donkey Kong. You know he's classy 'cause he wears a tie.

Barring the obvious choices like Mario and Link, Muddy Mole has a soft spot in my heart. Mole Mania was a game I played back when I was a child, and it's still one of my personal favorite Game Boy Games.

Muddy was a fun, cute little character to play as and I loved the story(as simple as it was) of him saving his children and wife from the evil farmer Jinbe. The gameplay and mechanics were novel and played well to his nature as a mole.

In the world of Nintendo characters who often get forgotten, he's one of my personal faves and unlike Miyamoto's other characters, never got the proper attention he deserved.

I heard that he was once considered for a Smash game, but Miyamoto shot down the idea.

Its a shame, since Smash has been a launching pad for so many Nintendo characters like Ness getting the attention they deserve.

Oh well, Muddy will always be my personal favorite who is not one of the well-known characters in Nintendo's stable.

Only Takamaru even comes close.

If Muddy and Takamaru could be added to Smash.....

Good question. Got a lot of them.

Personality-wise I think Rosalina, Wario, Zelda, Groose, or Daisy. By how they look I would say Waluigi (obviously) Link, Olimar, and Louie from Pikmin, Kirby or Luigi.

Does Bayonetta count?

I just don't think it's the Nintendo way to go heavily into characterization. All the research indicates that if you want the player to feel a part of the game you want to be controlling someone who is pretty much a blank slate, so that's what Link, Mario, Samus and the rest all tend to be like.

The exceptions mostly seem to come in the games developed by other studios. Platinum obviously love to breathe some life into their characters, as do Intelligent Systems (at least when Nintendo will let them i.e. not Sticker Star) and Monolith Soft.

Apart from the obvious ones (Mario, Ness, Link, Samus) I always loved Kamek, Chibi-Robo, and well, for 5 years it is now, Elma.

Kamek recently got great roles in Yoshi's Crafted World, and especially Paper Mario: The Origami King where he's hilarious. I still remember the sadness when he was cancelled from Mario Kart 64.

Chibi-Robo is one of my Nintendo All-Stars, because his first 3 games are some of my all-time favourite video games. They are ingenious. It's painful to not have him as a fighter in the ultimate Smash game.

Elma is my favourite Xenoblade character. She is a wise leader and I can't get enough of her. I hope Monolith's next game is as mature as Xenoblade X story- and character-wise.

Follow ups: Skull Kid, Midna, and Tingle, Saki Amamiya and Marina Liteyears, Kyle Hyde and Ashley Mizuki Robbins.

@SKTTR oh yeah I forgot Kamek. He’s definitely one of my favorites now that I think about it.

And not one person has mentioned Kirby yet! I don’t think they’re the best games in the Nintendo library, but Kirby is a great mascot. Loads of personality for basically a pink ball with shoes.

Yoshi is also a great character - but again, don’t think his solo games hold up quite as well as the big three of Mario, Link and Samus.

I’ll probably go Kirby, Samus and Yoshi. But my favourite Nintendo series is Zelda by some distance, so characters aren’t everything.

The obvious is mario link luigi donkey kong.

I do like goomba. I feel sorry for him. Poor guy. Deserves his own game

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Samus. In the context of her isolated atmospheric games, silent protagonist comes off more like stoic badass.

If Bayonetta counts, then her for almost the exact opposite reasons as Samus.

And Yoshi is just awesome.
