@ReeLongbow That it wasn't a British accent, but I think I already said so.

Anyway...

Would be neat if DQXI had good voice acting, maybe they'll add it in during the localisation, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

@Octane I do like that the main characters never talk in DQ or BOTW.

So a few days ago the producer of Dragon Quest XI stated that info on the Switch version would be released in an official statement "soon." A few days later Square Enix announced a livestream about the game in which the producers of both the PS4 and 3DS versions would appear. Seems likely that a reveal of the Switch edition is incoming...and if so, I'm already hyped!

I'm looking forward to get XI, as I understand are all of you guys, but I have one question about X.

I don't expect it to come to the West, they had 5 years to make it happen and they didn't, but I'm just curious: having never played any MMORPG, there are some things I simply don't know how they work.

Can you subscribe to one of these games and actually finish the story, so you can unsubscribe whenever you want? Or the games, in this case Dragon Quest X, is a neverending story which keeps you paying the fee until they close servers or you grow tired of it?

I'd love them to bring us DQX and being the series it is, I'd be willing to pay a subscription fee -depending on how much, of course-, but assuming that one day I'll have completed the story and will be free of letting the game go without feeling I jumped leaving things unfinished. In other words, I'd like to know if continued subscription is just for wandering around or it's necessary to play the actual story.

It's about time we got some news on this. They haven't even said anything about the PS4 version.

There will be an announcement that there will be an announcement. And a mobile game. Maybe a soundtrack.

Ideally, when it comes to MMORPGs you continue paying your subscription and they continue to add content over time. The games never truly end. Look at World of Warcraft or even Final Fantasy XIV for examples of this style of storytelling. As the game develops and new threats arise to push your characters to get stronger and stronger they make story reasons for doing so.

They can do this with DLC or Expansion Packs. You can call them whatever you want but they serve the same purpose here. I would absolutely love the get the Dragon Quest MMO on my Switch in the West and at this point I may just buy Rosetta Stone to learn Japanese so I can just go on the Japanese EShop and play and understand the dang thing! xD

With the Nintendo Direct coming tomorrow, does anyone else think that we'll finally get an official announcement of DQ XI localized for Switch? I believe that one of the game's producers said recently that news of the Switch version would come later at an official announcement, and a Nintendo Direct is about as official as it gets!

This is what I am hoping for as the surprise of the Direct.

Same here, though I've learned to dial down my expectations before every Direct. That way I don't disappoint myself. XD

Dragon Quest XI is confirmed to release in the west on September 4!
...but the Switch version won't release until "much later," and the 3DS version won't be localized at all. Words cannot describe my disappointment. Oh, Square Enix...

@ilikeike Yeah the handling of this game outside of Japan has been a complete mess.
Prioritising a PC release over the Switch version even though the series has been kept on life support in the west thanks to the DS and 3DS, that's what they call "making strategic sense"?
And then not even bothering putting it out on 3DS even though the game is roughly the same as the other versions, at least when it comes to story and translation because again, it didn't make strategic sense in 2018. Have they even looked at the numbers 3DS is still selling, despite slowing software support?

At least give us the 3DS version so that people waiting on the Switch version have some kind of other option. Heck losing the 2D version of this game is such a damn shame no matter how you look at it.
Sure, I can just buy the PS4 version, but I've become so disenfranchised by companies doing dumb stuff like this (Capcom with much to many examples and Namco with Gundam Breaker to name just a few), that I have just stopped supporting them on PS4 completely.
If there's no other way to buy these games down the line, I'll pick them up in a bargain bin for 15€ on PS4 instead of buying them day one for 60€ on Switch.
That's becoming the only way to send a message these days. Such a mess. :-/

Well, so much for getting DQ11 on Switch. The game will probably sell poorly on the system and Square will blame Nintendo for it.

But it could be worse, we're still getting Dragon Quest Builders 2.

I can wait. Although I will likely import the 3ds version this year. Octopath and DQ Builders II will take care of me for Squeenix RPGs for the year anyway. I do wish that they were a bit more clear though.

@meppi64 I can't say it makes complete strategic sense, but it's clear that Square wants to go for a brand rejuvenation. While us Nintendo fans have been supporting Dragon Quest, it really isn't all of us. I posted this on another forum, about how Square is going for a Monster Hunter World.

Comparing the two is easy, Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest have always been huge series in Japan, but very niche here. Capcom realized that, while Nintendo has supported them for a long time, an easier way to appeal to the western market is to act like its a brand new thing entirely. Hence the spin-off name of World and the reveal at E3 with high end graphics.

Since that worked, Square is definitely trying to do something similar. Instead of confusing the consumer with a "3DS and HD" version, they are making an all in one experience. I'm honestly surprised they haven't announced an Xbox port as well. Its not incompetence when it comes to the 3DS version, its an attempt at brand revitalization, which I personally don't think will work as well as Monster Hunter being a JRPG and all.

The Switch version? Complete incompetence no matter how you look at it. Huge failure from a big company to capitalize on hungry Switch owners.

People might think I'm childish for my picture, and I am.

I'm at a point when developers make stupid decisions like this, I won't even support other products. I won't bother with Octopath Traveler now either. I know the lack of one sale won't hurt Square Enix any but why support a company that treats one part of its base as an afterthought?

@ieatdragonz Yeah, I can see that.
Although it's certainly not optimal to aim for a single ecosystem (plus PC) when you already have a game ready for the 2 biggest ecosystems around right now. PS4 and 3DS.
This makes me wonder if it's another exclusivity contract by Sony. Somewhat similar to why there's no Xbox version of Monster Hunter World in Japan and no western version of Monster Hunter XX in the west.
The rumours going around before the MHW was even announced at the time certainly play into all this.
Just a very peculiar observation, especially since the Switch version of DQ11 was announced even before the system itself, so there should have been plenty of time to get it done by now.

@OmegaDestroyer
I get the sentiment, but all that does send the wrong statement.
All that will lead to is the company seeing the system as a non viable option for any of their games.

@Ryu_Niiyama
Yeah, I'm gonna end up importing the 3DS version as well.
I can't let that classic 2D version go. Unless they confirm that the Switch version will somehow include this, but at this point, I don't believe that is very realistic.

@meppi64
Doesn't it already seem that way, though? It's not like Square Enix is pumping out a lot of original or exclusive content for the Switch.

At this point, Square Enix is just another Capcom as far as Switch owners are concerned.

@OmegaDestroyer While I understand your anger (or frustration if you prefer that word), it doesn't make much sense to not support Octopath Traveler. The devs behind that game have shown good work ethic and great consumer feedback. It is also a wholly original game, and an exclusive at that.

And Square Enix is doing enough new content for us not to boycott imo. While I would prefer them to bring more JRPG's we do have games like Dragon Quest Builders, Dragon Quest Builders 2, TWETY Final Remix, I am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, and even niche games like Spelunker World. Are they being fantastic? Not in the slightest, but Octopath is a huge gift to us Nintendo fans, so I don't think we should waste it.

@ieatdragonz
I think it's too soon to say if Octopath (and other unreleased titles) is a huge gift or not. Until they are released, we have no way of knowing how well the end product will play.

I'm not calling for a boycott or anything. I'm just personally not going to support the company. Nintendo fans have been burned for YEARS by these companies and I'm not going to get excited by a company giving us a scrap ever few years or so. DQ XI was one of the first Switch games announced if I recall correctly . Now we're going to be getting (a presumably watered-down port) after everyone else? As someone new to the series, why would I bother?

Even more grating is when the Switch version is released with a presumably $60 price tag, the Steam version will most likely be on sale for $30. That's been a major gripe I've had waiting for Hollow Knight on the Switch. It's will be way cheaper on Steam when it is finally released on Switch and I will have waited 2 years (or thereabouts) longer for it.
