I have been wanting to get into the Xenoblade series since the first trailer for XC3, but I put it off because I wanted to do it "right" and play through 1, 2 (and DLC), and 3 (and DLC). Now that X is coming out, though, I want to know if I could grab that and enjoy it without prior knowledge of the series. Then I could work my way through the numbered games. Do any series veterans have suggestions? Thanks! Also, is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D a remake of 1, or a separate game?
Everything that has ever happened, there was once a time where it hadn't happened yet. And at that time, people might have been, like, "Yeah, but that's never happened." And then it happened. And once it's happened, you're, like, "Well, now it's happened."

The original release of XCX only has very minor connections to the rest of the series.
However, there's going to be new story content added in this new release, which might very well establish deeper connections. We just don't know yet. But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying this game if you haven't played any of the others yet. The only Xenoblade I would advise against playing first is XC3.
And yes, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is just a worse version of the Wii original.
I had no issues with the 3DS game...>.>
It's just a 3DS port of the original.
Anyways yeah X is like...a spinoff when you think about it. If anything the other games will be referenced or have easter eggs here and there but that's about it.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
@valtianeea I mean to be fair Xenoblade Chronicles 3D has slightly better visuals than the Wii version, but the dip in sound quality and worse performance does hinder it quite a bit.
I cannot speak for the Switch version since it's confirmed new story content is being added, but XCX on the Wii U has no story connections to the main XC entries. It is considered a spinoff that is almost pure sci-fi, while the main series is a sci-fi/fantasy mix. The only "relation" I can really think of is that Nopon appear in the game, but they're a signature race that has appeared in every Xenoblade so far. Kind of like Chocobos from Final Fantasy or Slimes from Dragon Quest.
There are some fan theories and discussion out there regarding possible links, but nothing official at this time.
Currently playing: Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind (Switch)
The game has no connections to Xenoblade Chronicles (main series). The background information that starts X off is largely incompatible with Xenoblade 1-3's backstory. There may be retcons in the remaster, but I highly doubt that'll actually happen. If it were connected, they would've done that back with Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
