I've actually played the first and last one. xD
The first time I was doing pretty ok against everyone, then Twintelle showed up in the last one and I got my butt kicked. xD

@NEStalgia Pretty spot on about Ninjara, but Ribbon Girl, Mechanica and anyone else with advanced air mobility can afford to be little more liberal with their jumps. The benefits to being grounded (namely being able to block) cannot be understated, though. Exploiting vulnerability while jumping (with flurries) is how I was eventually able to beat Headlok.
I didn't have too much trouble at level 4 Grand Prix otherwise. Only road bump was Master Mummy who uses a brutally simple tactic enhanced by godly AI reflexes: standing still while blocking and reacting to your move.
Ending spoilers: The game continues it's devil-may-care attitude towards lore with Biff briefly explaining intel about where Headlok came from (apparently an accident from ARMS Laboratories, y'know guys who made Helix), before the latter explodes and goes flying into the distance, Biff basically just goes "eh, maybe next time". Max Brass, being basically a combo of Capt. Falcon's just nature and Qwark's showboating, is completely unfazed by his possession or his earlier loss, and continues to flex for the fans. An epitome of manliness, but fair. Considering he more or less built the entire ARMs league himself, perhaps he's just happy to finally see competitors coming into their own.You also get a hand-drawn illustration of your character, Smash Bros.-style; for Spring Man it was him celebrating his league victory in front of the crowd, with Biff on stage cheering and Max in a suit happily, and politely applauding.
Even if you're unsure of yourself, don't be afraid to hop into Party mode (maybe do some of the training if you're really new to this). It balances for skill quite well, and nothing gives better experience than real opponents, be they good or bad.
Had fun in co-op Grand Prix with my boy. We cannot seem to get into party mode notwithstanding my Switch now being hardwired to the router. Suspect it will clear up tomorrow.
@meleebrawler Yeah I've spent tons of testfire time in party mode....I was hoping to hone up in single player a good deal before I next returned Of course blocking wasn't viable in the testfire....the grabfest that it was just made blockers targets (looks like they rebalanced grab damage since the first test.)
I'm still working on choosing a main(s). Ribbon, Min Min, Spring Man, Cobra, Barq, Mechanica all seem to work for me. I'm partial to Ribbon as my original main however. I think her poppers were toned down though...dual poppers don't seem to be as dominating now.
I skipped the spoiler for now I've been doing Versus with various characters at l4 in the same map against min min that was giving me trouble before. I've nailed it a few times now so I might finally be coming to terms with lv4. Not sure if it's learning the AI, or if there are differences in fighting vs. the test punch.
And of course when I start recording gameplay I start doing horribly...T.T
I guess I'm done for the night seeing how I'm sweating from this...also cursing constantly. lol

Something I noticed that I don't like about the game: it appears it's not possible to play with Joy Cons in each hand without motion controls. As soon as you detach the Joy Cons from the Grip it automatically switches to motion controls. I'd really like to be able to play with Joy Cons separately in each hand without using motion controls, like I do for most Switch games.
@SuperWeird You can actually play with the buttons when the Joy Cons are not attached to the Joy Con grip (the grip is just plasic and doesn't send any signals to the Switch saying the Joy Cons are attached), but your hands have to be still. Or not moving that much, at least.
I assume the motion controls kick in when the Switch detects "enough" motion from the JCs. Which would explain why you can play with traditional controls with the Joy Con + Grip.
So of course, yesterday I lost a layer of skin on the underside of my foot in an unfortunate flip flop based incident. The Dr. has written me off work and told me not to be on my feet. So I'm discovering the Joy of the Pro Controller in this game! It really is such a tight control scheme. Really liked the motion controls but now having used buttons, I'm not sure if I'll be ever able to go back.
This game is so much fun! I didn't get to play very much during the test punch (70 hour work weeks and my weekends are spent on the house and everything else I can't do during the week) so I had a general idea but after getting a good hour of play in...Oh Nintendo has another gem on their hands. My only annoyance is that if you detach the joycons it switches to motion controls. I wanted to play table top mode but I'll have to poke around the settings to see if I can do that sans motion controls. I don't dislike motion controls but I was sitting at a desk so...
Also this game is fricken gorgeous. The level of detail is just lovely.

The snakeboards on Kid Cobra's stage are just ridiculous, especially in 1v1. You can barely punish anyone on them since they have free movement at all times, and the undersides frequently block attacks when you jump. With two players using them it's almost impossible to land hits. The stage works better in free-for-alls, though; there is only one board, and it's in the middle, meaning you have to fight for it. Multiple players also stand a better chance at knocking someone off. The stage is also wide enough for comfortable battles in brawls.
Also in Party mode, in addition to win streak challenges, there are also "lucky breaks" in the form of free flurries at the start of matches for those that are on losing streaks instead.
@Vee_Flames there's a pin in the grip that shunts one of the charging pins deep in the bottom of the rail that treks the joycon its in the grip. Same with strap clips. That's how the system knows which configuration to draw for the animations of which controller is in use in the system menus.
I'm having major connection issues ... it ran flawlessly in the testpunch but now it kicks me out straight away or lets me enjoy one or two buggy matches before kicking me out . I don't know what the issue is ?
@NEStalgia This is a light schedule for me (even with the 2 hour commute). I used to work 7 days a week 90 hours. I am loving the fact that I have my weekends. I do uber a little but in general I spend my weekends either at home or in the dojo (my only issue with my current schedule is my dojo time was severely limited but I need the hours right now). Mini vacations every week! To answer your question my night job is solo security so in between my rounds I pull out the switch or study for IT certifications.
Seriously Iwata answered my prayers with this system. If they go back to traditional consoles next gen I will be devastated. I need them to iterate and improve on this concept as it is perfect for people like me. Other games I play for an hour or two on the weekend...my weekends are packed more than my week so I can't veg.
But yeah ARMS pulled a splatoon on me. I'm a snob about fighters (although the direct and testpunch already let me know the game had depth so I was already excited for it) so I was expecting to play ARMS for a little bit and then go back to SF or my Neo Geo games and then smash out some GG or Tekken or VF when I got home..Nope...MORE ARMS! I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually, but I have a feeling this game is going to get very regular play from me. I've convinced a few coworkers to pick up the switch so I'm expecting tourneys soon....can't wait.

Wouldn't bringing your grip allow you to play tabletop mode?
@NEStalgia Oh, is there? That's weird... I could've sworn I played with traditional controls with the Joy Cons not attached to the grip (I was actually surprised, too)... Or am I thinking about something else...?
I think ARMS is a good game, but it's probably my least favorite Nintendo fighter in recent memory. The gameplay just didn't click with me for some reason.
