It seems the Switch can support "current generation" heavy-hitters with careful optimization, but I doubt that will be the case once Sony and Microsoft release their "next generation" consoles. But I'm not worried. It'll just mean that developers will have to make Switch-only games rather than ports from other systems.

I think western 3rd party support will be poor (2017 getting big games like Skyrim and DOOM being exceptions rather than the rule) and the Switch essentially becomes the JRPG machine thanks to strong Japanese 3rd party support.

It better! That's why I buy the things!

@EvilLucario Zelda is Nintendo's only AAA franchise I believe they've said. Xenoblade developers consider it AA (they said so directly for XCX.) And I believe even Mario doesn't get a full AAA budget. That's probably what makes Nintendo games good.

There's a lot of good Western games....it's just not generally the most popular ones. Even Anthem looks like it could turn out decent. Too soon to tell though. And I'm a sucker for Gundam suits. Titanfall 2 was pretty cool though, much as it pains me to say that about anything from EA.

@Agriculture I'm not convinced TES6 are even coming to PS4/X1. That's so many years in the future it might be a swansong at the end of the PS5 or simultaneous PS5/PS6 launch. But keep in mind AAA games are designed, first and foremost, to be tech demos. Most of the point of the game is to wow people with impressive technology. That's why a lot of people get disgruntled with AAA games, gameplay is often secondary to the tech demo. As such, those games are pretty incompatible with Switch, as it's not capable of the feats of technology they're targeting. Not that Doom and Wolf aren't impressive tech demos simply by running, they are, but it's not going to be a focus for a AAA publisher who's primary business motivation is to wow people with technology....Switch customers aren't the people they are making their games for. (Meanwhile games like Valkyria have a chance to do best on Switch. It's not about the tech, it's about the deep gameplay.) Disgaea 5 already did better on Switch than on PS4, back at launch with a tiny install base. No tech demo there....

Ultimately it's a mismatch. AAA games are tech demos to amaze people on machines designed to crunch a whole heck of a lot of numbers. Switch is a machine to play relatively impressive games anywhere, designed to crunch well above average numbers on a tiny sip of power. They're pretty unrelated things.

Basically one is a Michael Bay movie, the other is a Scorcese film.

I disagree with everything you said. AAA is a recent term that is very vague. Was Kirby Star Allies an AAA game? Is Fallout New Vegas one? And while some games, like Killzone: Shadow Fall for PS4 are tech demos, it's not the goal of most AAA games, not even GTA. The goal of most major releases today seem to be to get into people's hands to get them to pay for micro transactions. If anything, high end graphics seem to be on the decline for this reason, they want as many players as possible and photo realistic graphics shuts out everyone without a high end gaming PC.

Whether Elder Scrolls 6 comes for PS4 or PS5 will probably come down to when it's scheduled for release rather than what technology is needed. If it comes to PS5 it will probably benefit from higher performance in the form of better shadows, 4k resolution, 60 fps, lower load times and things like more realistic water, but it could just as well come to PS4. I'm not saying it's simply a matter of turning down some settings, but it is a lot easier than previous generations to adapt a game to limitations of a specific hardware.

Already during the end of the PS3 it was realized that the console still held up fairly well, and that it would be a good idea to release games like MGS5 and Persona 5 on PS3 too since there is so many in peoples homes.
