@Agent721 @Lroy I'm using Katana. I just use the bombs to give me some invincibility. During those few seconds, it gives me enough time to charge up my shot and that's enough to take most things out.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

Argh! I just died against the boss at the end of level 1-5, but fired off a Miko smart bomb just before biting the bullet - and it destroyed him! If that smart bomb just executed a little faster... Finally broke 500,000 though.

@Lroy

Yes, that game was hard. I got to go back to it. I’m happy to finish mid table in any of these challenges. We’ve got some great gamers onboard!

@Lroy

Everyone seems to have a different strategy but I keep my bombs for certain moments where I always die, use them immediately in those exact areas and then use the power shot to beat other enemies I can handle. I find some bosses and areas much harder than others, such as the one boss that ejects red orbs that follow you around trying to kill you. I die every time without a bomb. I also use bombs on the 1st & 2nd incarnation of the fish/turtle boss under the water, as I tend to die there, especially with the turtle form. However I don’t use bombs after the turtle form as it’s fairly easy after that.

Other bosses, like the one who throws the hat, are easy to beat without any bombs so I conserve them there.

I tend to reset if I die somewhere I shouldn’t have.

I was able to improve, twice, but not much, still at 885k or something like that. I know tons of places to improve in first loop, but most of those places are such that I would need dedicated practice just for those specific places to pull those off and these zerodiv ports do not give possibility for save point. Basically I would wish I could just drill levels from 4 forwards more, but there is still those 3 level you need to pass before that without any big mistakes... which is easier said than done.

that second loop... I have got there at least 4 times now, it's crazy with those suicide bullets from each enemy.

@GFoyle Fantastic score mate. First of many I'm sure

@Lroy There are so many places where you can get better score, like if you kill certain medium size enemies fast enough you get extra medium size enemies to kills, which you are worth a lot of points (kill the cannon men in the river stage fast enough for example), if you catch coins flat side facing you, they are worth 2k, sideways 200.. hidden coins are found certain places if you go to the bottom screen and walk, shrine level middle boss gives you more points if you break the face, the front wheel and some other part separately and not just the whole thing etc. Easier said than done though...

Do people actually use the charge shot? It doesn’t seem to be worth it, but I might have overlooked something.

Guess I am going to skip this week's challenge. Too much distractions. Btw. Is someone using the Hori RAP hayabusa arcade stick? Is it worth it?

It really depends on the character how good/important the charge shot is. For Katana and Ayin it's pretty much crucial and the the main thing what makes them good (Ayin's bomb is the best though too, but because the charge shot has so short range, you need to be up close often and you really need to have the timing right and know where the enemies general come from, how they attack because especially up close, you don't have any time to react). For some characters it's better mostly to use basic shot and only use the charge shot in certain situations. Same with bombs. The characters are really different from each other, which is great.

@Zkibu I really want to get that arcade stick. Thinking maybe my birthday later this year will be the time ☺️

@Meppi64 and some of the fellas here are the ones to ask. Remind me chaps, does this HORI Arcade stick come with a USB lead to be connected to the actual Switch dock. So wired docked play? I think you have to buy a separate adapter to connect it to the Switch system itself for table top mode? Yes?

@Lroy I know it is so beautiful I am guessing that it needs some kind of dongle and stand ( Hori?) to work with the system itself

Got a new score! 803801, if I remember correctly. I think I saw the end boss? Not sure, I also died immediately lol.

@Lroy yeah, the Hori stick connects via USB like pretty much every arcade stick these days.
I use an extra USB extension cord so it's easier to not only keeping it plugged into the dock, but also to lead it behind the cabinet and around the room so I don't trip over any wires when I get up mid-play.

So yes, if you're gonna use it without the dock, for vertical play and table top mode, you'll need a usb dongle that connects directly to the Switch.

I don’t get it sometimes, that best run felt I was doing worse than normal. Would like to break 900k...

@GFoyle Those are some consistent(ly high) numbers there.

@mauhlin12 Yeah, I think I get to the second loop now with Ayin quite often, improving is another matter.

About the Switch Hori stick, I have it as well. I definitely like it with the old shmups where it works well. Tengai is actually one of the games where I feel I have better change of doing well when I use it compare to joycons. I also had separate stand for the switch (+dongle), but currently I just have a dock plugged into computer monitor which I prefer. I'm actually thinking getting dedicated monitor with the pivot functionality just for gaming purposes (maybe even 4k one + xbox one x as well). I don't really like to play this older games with huge TV as the pixels get way too big and it just looks ugly. I also like to be closer to the screen with these games.

For me Hori stick is not perfect though, I don't like the joystick part that much. I feel it has too much "travel" (not sure what is the right term, I mean how much you have to move for it to register) and it's a bit too loose to my taste. I don't like the square base either, feels too "angular" and rough to me. Buttons I'm fine with. I'm have been thinking about modding it with different parts, but there are too many to choose from and I don't have any idea what I should get and what is guaranteed to work with this stick. Any help in this would be appreciated. Note! these are just my personal preferences, there are lot of people who like the stick as it is!

btw. it doesn't work well with all shmups. With modern games there is often the problem with the sensitivity, for example in Sky Force Reloaded, there is way too much movement with a single "tap" on any direction (same with the Luftwaffe one). I guess those games are optimized to the analog joystick only. In Danmaku Unlimited 3 it has been done correctly, both options work well. Would be great if these modern arcade stick would have separate analogue joystick as well! (maybe even some force feedback like driving wheels often do have)

@GFoyle
amazing, consistent scores, very well done.

Was about to improve my best minutes ago (not pictured), I was 812K at the last boss with one bomb left but the sucker sniped me before I could press the button.
Speaking of reaching 900K... did you try milking the bosses before killing them? I mean dispatching some extra popcorn mobs like the fishes in the water stage (i bet they're worth 200 each) or the small pods spawning at the butterfly boss... you're there anyway, a bad timed/missed coin will made a huge difference.
Did you dispatch big pagoda at the start of forest stage and river stage mid-boss quickly enough to spawn at least 2 red potheads afterwards? They're worth 2.5k alone and the drop 1 coin, so another potential 2k each.
My 0.02, not in the position of giving advices anyway since I'm nowhere near your level, LOL

The original fire has died and gone, but the riot inside moves on.
