Topic: Arcade SHMUP High Score Thread

Going by some of these recent posts it sounds as though a fair few of us are in and around each other's scores on MOON PATROL. I played a few runs this afternoon and managed to also move up the leaderboards a bit. Think I'm just over 28,000 odd. Not exact without checking. I'm also aiming to break 30, 000 as my personal target.

Great, great early eighties arcade game. The first to introduce parallax scrolling I believe? Become a firm fave of mine, thanks to you guys and this thread 👍

Seriously. I used to play this in the arcades quite young, around six years of age and I sucked at it. It is a trip to play it again as an adult!!!! An arcade just opened up a few neighborhoods away from me in LA and I am planning a stop and hopefully this cabinet will be there.

And I agree with your sentiment from another post, its been great to discover other old arcade heads in NL. Its like brining back my youth!!!

I lost two high scores early on due to button smashing. It should just automatically record your high score if you beat your old one without asking.

@Agent721 true. I don't know why someone wouldn't upload new hi score to rankings. Seems silly that game have to ask that. Of course not that big deal just need to be more careful or stop button mashing and maybe start sniping the flying saucers.

@Agent721 @Zkibu I changed the buttons to Y for shoot and X for jump and set B for no action. My highest score so far of 27,400 didn't register because of button mashing. Since changing it I've not been able to get close to that score again though haha

Not a massive increase - 400 points - but would have put me above a couple of places on the Leaderboard.

@Lroy Now lets see if your next score registers. I think once you hit B after registering a high score, your next ones won't register at all unless you reset your score. It has happened to me with a few games now and just had that thought when it happened in Moon Patrol. Earlier today I was playing Sengoku 3 and set a brilliant score that would have placed me 2nd on leaderboard, accidently hit B though. Next shot wasn't quite as high but still far more than my registered one, didn't give me option to register. Happened to many times now to be a coincidence. I reset my score on Sengoku 3,set another really high score and this time it registered. I'm 3rd now

I remapped the buttons - Jump is now X / Attack is now Y - (A and B set to NO ACTION) and there she blows!!!

This was the first occasion of surpassing my previously registered score and after that mess-up with me hitting 'B' and losing my recent best score. Thankfully, this one did register 😄. Note: @oorwullie I didn't have to reset my scores fortunately for this next 'higher score' to register.

And with that, I may leave this as my entry for this week.

Oh mother of pearl it's doable! Sweet jesus it's doable. I'm on a mission. I just jumped something I didn't think you could. 3 pixel perfect jumps and level 3 is 59 seconds! Crap...now I can't rest...That's some very clever level design.

@GrailUK With the extra time that will give you from the 5 min Carvavn limit, what is the optimum play of Level 4? I won't be able to replicate the 59 sec Level 3, I take the mines at default speed ☺️

But I'm interested to know whether the extra time you gain is best spent now getting to the end of Level 4 or harvesting the points at the crescent of the hill like you previously said?

@Lroy Hmm...is it possible to get to the start of level 5 when you get credited for the points.
Well, if you can take advantage of the frame at the start of the level and assume each stage can take 58 seconds. 4 x 58 = 3mins 52.
The end of level bonus takes approximately 18 seconds (I think) 4 x 18 = 1min 12
So it's agonisingly close, but I don't think you would get the points credited in time.

Came so close to taking top spot on Sengoku 3. In the last few seconds a stupid grunt made himself awkward to hit. One more combo on him and I'd have been top. Superb game!
