Sweet, Moon Patrol! I skipped Danmaku last week, but i will definitely be giving it a shot on Moon Patrol (and yet another game to cross-off my wishlist). I loved Moon Patrol back in the arcade days (not to mention home ports), so it will be cool to revisit it again. Aside from maybe a few minutes playing it on MAME sometime in the past 10 years, i don't think i've really played it since the 80s. Hope i still have my skills!
I haven't even quite reached even 27.000 yet even tho I've had no-deaths runs... I guess I need to be much faster!
Do you guys exploit the dropped bombs to jump them and AFTER that kill the globes-ships? I don't do that otherwise I risk having one of them get away and drop the chain bonus that (I think) you only get if you kill a whole group of AT LEAST 3 aliens (500, 800, etc.)
Is there a way to speed up the bonus screen counter at the end of a "level"?
@the_shpydar
Welcome to the crew buddy! Shoot us a friend request, it'll be even better battling it out on the leaderboards or take inspiration for a game purchase following your/our recently played lists!
@Shiryu
It's great that you participate how you can anyway, keep up with it, the leaderboards must be kept alive... it'll be fun going back to some of these games and try to better our scores whenever we'll feel like it!
@everyone !!
It feels AWESOME to fire up the Switch and see 6/7 people on my friends list all playing Moon Patrol at once and having a bunch of great oldies but goldies arcade games in their recently played games list!
Now that we've interacted for a good while I can't wait to play multiplayer games /game nights with you bunch 😃
We've been playing MARIO KART 8 DELUXE on Mondays.
We're hoping to organise game nights on other games as well (SPLATOON 2, ARMS, SUPER BOMBERMAN R, PUYO PUYO TETRIS, ROCKET LEAGUE, STREET FIGHTER COLLECTION when it lands, MARIO TENNIS ACES etc).
So please go participate in that thread and help us get a healthy crew together for online play 👌
Probably also worth mentioning again that if arcade and retro game chat is your jam. A fair few of us often frequent and converse in this Switch Arcade Community thread:
@DashKappei I've never thought about letting this ships drop more bombs.
I try to go as fast as possible and only slow down when a projectile is coming my way that I can't shoot down. Otherwise, it's full steam ahead to the finish, while trying to shoot down everything as fast as possible and avoid pits and shooting rocks.
I'm wondering about that bonus myself actually. Don't know if you can mix & match enemy types to get it. I kinda think you can't, but I'm not sure.
I haven't been able to speed up the bonus screen at all.
hehe, yeah, I said pretty much the exact same thing yesterday.
For some reason, it feels so good to see a whole bunch of people play Moon Patrol instead of some western AAA micro transaction-infested run-of-the-mill shooter.
Feels a bit like a time machine that takes you back to the good old days where games were still just games and that was just fine.
And yeah, like @Lroy said, we've been getting together to play some online games every couple of days.
Doesn't really matter if it's Splatoon, Arms, Mario Kart, Rocket League, whatever. It's just more fun playing together here.

If anyone fancies using the Switch recording function and uploading a clip of them navigating the lunar land mines on level 3 of MOON PATROL, that be helpful. At present I'm about 60th on the Global Leaderboard with a score of 15, 030 approx.
Not managed to get past the mines without using all my lives yet.
EDIT: Actually if anyone just wants to upload the MOON PATROL music on a loop that be fine. Love, love the music of this game. Quintessential arcade era ambience. Makes me so happy.
@Lroy The trick to navigating those mines is that the buggy has quite a bit of inertia when you jump.
So you can not directly control it in the air, but it somehow feels like you can.
I can't quite explain that.
Perhaps it depends on the movement you do as you leave the ground, I'm not quite sure.
You can perhaps compare this a little to the original Super Mario Bros. where the jumps feel a bit floaty.
So you can somewhat throttle the way you jump to either jump a little further while driving slow, or to lose a bit of speed in the air when driving fast.
Again, I'm terrible at explaining this. Try experimenting with changing your movement from right to left or the other way around while jumping or just before you jump.
It still remains very hard to perfect when you start getting it, but that what makes this one so fun.

@DashKappei I just go through trying to shoot everything down. On my score run, I managed not to die until near the end, at the top of the hill I got caught with a bomb, and going down the hill I got caught with a bomb again within the last seconds. The bonus points aren't chain bonuses for shooting the ships in the air, but actually points for how many ships were in that squadron, of the same type. 500 if 3 ships and 800 for 4.
@Lroy@meppi64@GrailUK I believe the mine placement is dependent on how fast you're going. Like if you go super slow, the mines are closer together, and farther apart if you go faster. Going top speed will place mines in such a way that you have to slow down on certain ones. And overall, it does look like they're a specific sequence between mines placed with short, medium, and long gaps, and double mines, with short gap ones intended to be jumped at top speed with some speed finagling.
That said, I don't have time to decipher all that this week, so I just go normal speed with short taps forward for a slight speed boost, LOL!
If 10 year old me could see me playing this today :Q1 )
It funny you say that, I was thinking the same thing when I was playing it this morning.
About the mines, I've not been having too much trouble with them. I cleared them on my 2nd attempt and think I've only hit 2 or 3 in the numerous times I've cleared them since. It's the big rock right after a jump near the end of the 2nd level that has got me so many times. Then there's the stupid amount of times I've tried and failed to jump it after saying to myself "sh*t I'm going too fast" and then panicking. As for negotiating the mine section I just take my time, moving at the normal rate, jumping early for the first mine of each group and tap accelerate/decelerate where needed. There's a couple of clear stretches between mines where it's tempting to speed up but I don't risk it, at best it would get you a couple of hundred extra points for finishing slightly quicker. Other than that big rock, it's the rolling stones that are giving me bother, not quite got the timing right for those yet.
Sorry for the delay making up the leaderboard. Was out at my mates last night playing Darts fill yon time then today I had some other stuff to do. Tired now, so it'll need to wait till tomorrow.
@OorWullie They are actually 2 small rocks (but I think they look like turds - less intimidating lol!) You get more points for shooting them (100, as opposed to 80 for jumping them.) Anyhoo, hope this snippet helps.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
