Been working, so not been able to keep up with the thread. Has MOON PATROL been 100% confirmed as next week's game? Despite being skint and trying to adhere to a buying ban for now, I intend to buy and play along every week. So as soon as we know the next game, let me know and I'll go buy it regardless of what the Mrs. says 😂

@meppi64 To be fair, this has become one of my favourite Switch games at the moment so I am going to keep playing (I know there is no open leader board). Hope you do too and post any awesome scores!
@Lroy Moon Patrol I think was a popular choice so I think it's 100% confirmed (Certainly a welcome change of pace from this weeks challenge lol)
@hybridseed Thanks mate. When it clicks, it's like looking at the Matrix code lol.
Just beat my score, although not by much. I felt more comfortable playing it there than I ever did. This will be my final score for the weekly challenge but I'm going to keep playing it.
@GrailUK There will be an open leaderboard for this like with the other games. I think this game needs it more than any
It might be tricky making up the leaderboard for this one. I'll need to search for the names of those I can remember taking part and look for their last posts with an image on their profile. I'm not sure if everyone who was taking part have submitted their scores yet though.
Huge congrats @GrailUK but also to @Meppi64 and @CaffeinatedGamer and all who took part. My score was pretty embarssingly low on DANMAKU but I still enjoyed it and will hope to improve over time in the future.
Grabbed MOON PATROL and am loving it already. There's a unique magic to the older, classic arcade games and probably why to this day, I cannot resist playing PAC-MAN on any occasion I see the machine in any venue.
Simple fun gameplay but depth underneath like all the true classics. Welcome excuse to put some time into MOON PATROL as despite its high-standing with arcade aficionados and being from a developer I really rate - IREM - I have very seldom played this game before. Thanks again to this thread and this community for engendering such a passion for these old games.
@hybridseed I'm in the exact same position right now about wanting to buy Moon Patrol to participate. I may just end up with it by the end of the night.
@Lroy Thank you! You'll definitely continue to improve with each replay.
Unfortunately, I'm not feeling 100% and right when I got home from work I went straight to bed. I know the timeline has passed on Danmaku Unlimited 3, but since I already put in the effort the last few days, I'm still going to take one more shot at it and see how far I can get.
@Lroy Work was getting in the way for me, too. The first 3 days I have to work mornings, last night I had to do overnight, and now I have to adjust back to mornings again for the new project starting Monday. It probably messed with my concentration on DU3, too...yeah, I'll go with that excuse
@RetroGamerAndrew Sorry to hear that, man. Yeah, agreeing with @GrailUK if it stops being fun, it's about time to stop. It's a death spiral that's insanely hard to brute force through and recover within the confines of a week.
@Fafounet Top 5, that's tough. In no order though, and subject to change:
-Mushihimesama-futari: An all-around well-designed shmup with enough difficulty options for novices to experts.
-U.N. Squadron/Area 88: My favorite horizontal shmup, it has a great flow and is easy to memorize.
-Gradius: Respect to the classic.
-Gunbird 2: The culmination of the Psikyo-style, IMO. Special Attacks, item collection with skill, and secrets!
-Mars Matrix: Many ways to play, but it might take a lifetime to truly master and maximize the score.
So yeah, I couldn't really pull something together in this game until like yesterday, when some things finally clicked. Overall, it was hard getting into the flow. I'm either pushing the thumbstick too far and flying into bullets or not enough and dropping combos. It could also be that I'm still thinking that the bullets have small hitboxes like CAVE games, lol! So my only score that I posted earlier this week was the final (59,939,749). Here's the vid for that:
And here's a sort of bonus clip that, hopefully, shows inklings of my new strategy. In the other vid I was playing rather orthodox, in my eyes. In any case, I made it to 25 Million by the end of the first stage, so something's working!
Can't wait to patrol some moons, wonder why the rover can't jump that far if we're on the moon, and curse out the so-and-so who dropped those mines so close to each other, lol!
Well played everybody, especially @GrailUK (when he's around you already know you're competing for second place!), @meppi64 (very well played man) and competition newcomer @CaffeinatedGamer who showed some real skill! Not going to participate this week, I'm not the greatest fan of Moon Patrol... But I'll be closely watching you all
Good luck, have fun!
The original fire has died and gone, but the riot inside moves on.
Just had my best run on Moon Patrol, 27,400 which would have placed me 25th on the leaderboard but I pressed B instead of A to register my score. That's the problem with a game that has you hammer B to shoot. I'd recommend changing the buttons to X for jump and Y to shoot.
Managed to clear the first stage in 59 seconds and with my bonus added scored 6350,my best so far. Was also my first run where I never died on the 2nd stage. That big rock after the jump near the end always gets me.
