Hey everyone, this is my first time posting here. So one of the things I really hope we get with the Switch 2 is some form of a trophy/achievement system. I saw people on the YouTube trailer comments talking about how it's not worth anything because it's solely for bragging rights, and while there's some truth to that, that's never been the case for me. For instance, getting a platinum trophy has always felt extremely satisfying for the completionist in me. I know that some games on switch have these kind of built in achievements but it's just not the same lol. I like how on other platforms they're tied to your account. It allows me to see the entire range of things I've done across all my games. I mean, even if other people use it as a way to have "bragging rights" does it really matter that much? lol.
Anyways, thank ya'll for reading. Much appreciated.
I'm kinda indifferent to them. I do see it more as a bragging rights sort of thing and back when I used PS4, I never really cared for earning them as it meant nothing to me. It was kinda neat to compare my achievements with others though.
What I would like to see make more of a comeback is unlockables given as achievements. That actually gave me a reason to go out of my way and master a game. It feels really satisfying to accomplish something really difficult in a game and get a new character as a reward. But who am I kidding; the unlockables that were given as achievements yesterday are just DLC today.
I quite enjoy achievements as long as they're reasonable. They can be motivational and give me an extra reason to explore a game's world or try out new modes I'd have never considered before. I think most of us would be happy if there was the ability to turn them off in the systems settings and choose whether you wish to share them with friends. This would be an acceptable compromise, I think.
I don't care much about achievements and/or trophies.
I enjoyed chasing them for Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield, but nothing else since.
I wouldn't lament their absence on Switch 2.

Personally, I hope we never get them. Sorry, just not for me. I love that Nintendo does not do this.
As an objective thing part of a singular game, then that is ok, but if it becomes like Xbox and has points for every game and 'gamer scores' for doing things like 'go to option screen', then it will be too much for me. My OCD would just destroy me with this.
I don't like system-wide achievements, especially when they are mandatory for every release. Not every game needs achievements.
I prefer in-game achievements when applicable. Developers may choose to add them if they feel like they add to the game, instead of having busywork or stuff you would end up doing either way, and they can also reward you while at it.
I appreciate they're not 'for everyone'... and can occasionally fuel elitist/bragging narratives, but for me they give me that extra push to strive extra challenges that I may not have necessarily seen by playing a given game 'normally'.
Personally achievements are used by companies to artificially inflate the length of a game. I have played and completed games in a couple of hours that c claimed to be 80+ hours only to find out that 70 of those hours are spent getting superficial achievements. Like I don't mind getting an achievement for finishing a level or discovering a hidden part of the game. But when you are giving one for jumping in the same spot for 2 hours or some other b.s. like that that's where I draw the line.
Not only that but I hate elitists that came that a game isn't finished or complete till you get all the achievements no matter how superficial they may be. A game is finished when the main story is done period.

I was just thinking about this today! I feel conflicted on it because achievements aren't to my personal taste. I feel compelled to do them when I really like a game, which makes playing feel like a chore sometimes.
but I understand some people enjoy and benefit from achievement systems, and I can't deny I'm curious to see how they'd be implemented in Nintendo games!
The completionist in me truly hates achievements in the system/outside of the game. There is the 'natural' 100% built into the actual central game and then achievements add artificial extra tasks which apparently weren't considered good enough for the game proper. Fundamentally I don't want to feel pressured into doing artificial sub-par additions to a game.
Plus they often act as a public shaming and add weird competitiveness to non competitive games, which is also a reason I think Nintendo won't add achievements. Fundamentally people should play a game until they feel satisfied and that really doesn't need to be broadcast to the world.
Achievements are nice, but I’d say it’s not really a necessity. Achievements on the Xbox helped me get into games I didn’t really feel like playing and trying to make more progress on some games and completing them, but I am honestly fine with them not adopting it like Xbox and PlayStation. I think if the achievements actually gave you more of a reward for completing an achievement it would kind of give people a reason to do them; as much as I like the achievements on the Xbox, the Gamerscore not really being used for anything but for show is kind of surprising and it’s only in some games that do give the player actual rewards for getting achievements, but I feel like if the Switch 2 did that it could maybe pressure some people into doing a ton of challenges to get achievements and possibly feeling burnt out later, so I don’t really care if they add an achievement system or not.

They would be great, for example on the NSO. It would give some accomplishment to playing the old games. For example:
beat SMB
beat SMB without the 1Up trick
beat SMB without warping
beat SMB without dying
etc.
I think that would be very fun. Kind of like collecting stars in a Mario 3D game. Look at the list and see what you want to tackle. But maybe now that there's the speedrunning "Nintendo Championships NES Edition" it won't happen.
I've never really interacted with an achievements system, so am coming from a place of ignorance. I own the consoles that people refer to having these systems, but they've never been my main gaming devices, I use them infrequently (very infrequently since Switch), and have never paid the Achievements any attention.
What I have seen is this:
There's a sub-group of gamers who clearly appreciate an Achievements system. Good for them. Whatever floats your boat
There's a sub-group of said sub-group who seem to assume the whole world wants to be kept up-to-date with their Achievements progress, particularly in terms of what they've 'Platinum'-ed. This sub-group is socially inept and should be banished from the internet. Put them all on an Achievements island and ensure that island has no internet connectivity whatsoever. They can spend their days telling each other what they've platinum-ed without ever having to interrupt us with their banality again.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
Don't care because I'm not a trophy completionist. I'm just enjoying the game my own way and not hunting down trophies for bragging rights. But if it makes some people beat the game at the very least, then good for them I suppose.
It’s simple. Trophies / achievements will give replay value to games that would otherwise be one and done. It also will have a attachment aspect to it, for example when a new generation starts a player will more likely stick with Nintendo because they’ve built up not only a library of games but also trophies / achievements. For those who don’t care for them, adding these trophies literally will not affect you at all and you can simply ignore them. For those who do want them though, this will be a major deal.

Replay value isn't necessarily the goal for a game company, especially a console maker; they would prefer you to buy a new game.
Although personally for me the trophies make me less likely to want to replay; I spend time doing pointless tasks not considered good enough for the main game and then I basically never want to see that game again rather than feeling satisfied by a polished and complete experience and then feeling fondly of it in the future. I realize not everyone feels that way, but it does definitely have a negative effect for some.

Well said! I feel exactly the same about achievements.
I hope Nintendo never implements such a system.
I really don't know how I feel one way or the other. On one hand, trophies/achievements are the catalyst to a very specific brand of elitism and hostile toxicity, which while easily ignored is currently not present in Nintendo's ecosystem, in turn making "Playing with Power" a much more chill experience compared to Playstation or Xbox.
But on the other hand, I used to be quite the trophy hunter, and my Playstation account has trophies dating back to the rereleases of God of War 1 and 2 for the PS3 in 2009. That's 16 years of history, perfectly preserving almost all of my gaming accomplishments on PS3-5 and Vita, that I can and have looked back on fondly. As a digital record of where I've been, for my own personal use rather than bragging rights, I really do love trophies.
If they weren't there for Switch 2, that's fine. If there were there for Switch 2, that's also fine, just don't come at me for not having the platinum on BOTW since I couldn't be guffed to get all 900 Korok seeds.
