With the Nintendo Switch 2 launching soon, here are some products Nintendo can create within the Switch 2 family/ecosystem to reach a broader variety of different people and their needs within the gaming community. Here is the rundown of the different products that I believe Nintendo should create.
Switch 2 Pro: Basically a more powerful pro-level Switch 2 with two more cores for CPU and double the GPU Cores as the normal Switch 2 along with 16 GB LPDDR5X memory. It is geared towards hardcore handheld gamers and people who still want an even more powerful hybrid console.
Switch 2 Home: Basically a home console only Switch 2 based on the normal Switch 2 hardware in a Mac mini like form factor and shell and would come with a Pro Controller as default rather than JoyCons as it is geared towards normal gamers who want a basic controller.
Switch 2 Home Pro: Basically a home console only Switch 2 Pro with the same form factor as the Switch 2 Home but with the Pro's SOC inside. It's meant for hardcore gamers who want a more powerful normal home console. Comes with a Pro controller as well just like the normal Switch 2 Home.
Switch 2 Go: Basically a handheld only Switch 2 much like the Switch Lite was to Switch 1 with the normal Switch 2 SOC.
This is how Nintendo can increase their player-base and bring more people into their ecosystem. What are your thoughts on the product ideas for the Switch 2 family.
You think Nintendo should split their user base amongst FIVE different Switch 2 versions (if you include the original design SW2 on top of the 4 you have listed here)?;
That I don't think is a road map to success.
Of these options you list, I think they should choose between one of the following options you listed:
Switch 2 Pro
Switch 2 Go (Lite)
And Nintendo should only choose one of these options. Switch 2 Pro would have an enhanced screen (OLED if the technology becomes available to make one with VRR @ 120hrz at a cost effective price point) and also allow VRR in docked mode as Nintendo already apologized for that omission. Im not sure you could actually make the screen any bigger without it genuinely being unwieldy though. What do you think is the maximum size they could go on the screen?
The Switch 2 Go i hope they design without reducing any if its power so it can run games just as well as original Switch 2 in handheld mode.
You can already use a certain VR/augmented reality glasses as a screen for Switch 1, so almost certainly you'll be able to do it on Switch 2. Just requires a little fudging and an appropriate adapter that will turn your Switch into docked profile even on the go. I've seen it done once before and it was quite cool. So I presume you'll be able to do the same trick on Sw2.

Well, the Switch 2 Home and Switch 2 Home Pro exist as something for those who don't want the adaptability and flexibility of the hybrid system approach of the normal Switch 2 and Switch 2 Pro and just want a normal traditional home console. They are designed to be compact like Apple's Mac mini and it come with a Pro Controller as standard rather than the JoyCon 2 Controllers. They would be something to appeal to people who just want a traditional home console like the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. Those are the ways along with the Switch 2 Go where Nintendo can reach more players with the Switch 2 family by providing players options with what they want (hybrid for those who want adaptability, home console only for those who want a normal traditional home console, and handheld only for those who just want a normal handheld). It's a win-win situation for consumers. It's a lot like Apple with the Mac which uses the same silicon across the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro which are computers with different form factors and different use case and audiences. Nintendo would maintain largely the same library they have with Switch 1 and now Switch 2 across the different device form factors due to using the same chip and fundamental architecture much like the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini run the same OS and applications in Apple's Mac lineup thanks to the same Apple silicon.
Well im not saying no company could pull such a strategy off, just that it would be quite a complex undertaking for uncertain gains.
What i mean by that is it would require Nintendo to pretty much simultaneously engineer five unique pieces of hardware, spin up manufacturing on it all to ensure each hardware has enpugh units to sell to interested parties, would have to guess pretty accurately how in demand each unique SW2 might be, during a period of extreme pipeline disruption in the silicon field due to the impact of tariffs.
And all that effort must be combined with marketing that somehow makes it clear to consumers the difference between aaall those products.
Added to the uncertainty that such a strategy can even be pulled off successfully in this industry. The oppisite has tended to be true: the more versions of a single platform there are on the market, the more confusing it is for consumers, thr more complicated it is for developers to ensure compatibility with each platform.
Frankly, there is no world Nintendo releases this many types of Switch 2's. They are goimg to choose one or two directions and one or two only for their secondary switch 2 version, and we just have no idea what paths they will ultimately choose. Bet thatll depend on what Nintebdo needs at the moment, say if sales cool off because the market ends up not digging the high prices. In such a scenario i could see them see them selecting a Switch 2 Go, and holding off on a premium more expensive model for a bit further down the line.
