Andross actually gave me less trouble than the Venom 2 battle with Star Wolf. Now that I've completed my first playthrough I can say, for sure, this will be the version of Star Fox 64 I go to when I want to play the game. Frustration with Venom 2 aside, I love what they did with this.
I think only when I got to like...my probably like 6th or so successful run of that route in 64 (not even including any failed runs) did I not think Venom 2 Star Wolf was the most frustrating part of 64, and arguably by some distance, so that sounds right tbh. Either right as an accurate recreation of 64 or right as to what it should be in the context of being a remake of 64.
I'd drop $500+ for this bad boy if I could magically play this in 3rd person VR with the Steam Frame using an NS2 Pro Controller. That would be UNreal and completely reinvigerate my love for SF64 and up the immersion, wow factor and fun by 1000x. Or at the very least, in stereoscopic 3D. As is, it's missing that 3DS Remaster S3D Magic. Visuals look fantastic though, but it's hard to get excited when it's still technically the same exact, or near, game at it's core.
I've already beaten it on 3DS. It was a strong 7/10. Had it not had Stereoscopic 3D, i don't think it would of been nearly quite as fun, fresh or striking. I still plan on getting this on NS2, just not at the retail price, whenever i finally get an NS2 which probably won't happen until LOZ OOT Remake drops. I wish i could get excited for NS2, but whatever hype i previously had just isn't there. I'm way more amped up for the Steam Frame for PCVR, at this point. But I'm sure, when OOT Remake gameplay footage drops, i'll be fore more enticed and back on board the NintenHype express.
Just did my first play through. Real nice time. As many times as I played this as a kid, I never finished it. I’ll do another play through tomorrow and Sunday, and maybe do some multiplayer stuff as well.
I find it interesting to see a number of players (both veterans and seemingly first-timers) focusing on doing the hard route immediately. When I play it eventually, I plan to do the easy route first and the hard one last, though I'm not sure how to take on the middle stages in-between. Though with a couple of exceptions, I intend to finish all stages both ways at some point.
@BrazillianCara Are they doing the hard route first or did they just very quickly finish the easy route and then spent more time on the harder route? It's a very short game and the first route is especially fast.
@BrazillianCara Unlike the N64 original and its 3DS remake, this Switch 2 remake literally tells people how to access the alternate routes (with the sole exception of Sector Y to Aquas). So newcomers would just be following what the characters say you should do.
Honestly that's the first disappointing thing about this. Part of what made Star Fox 64 cool is that you had to figure out the secret routes yourself, and while they were often...clear enough based on what the characters recommend you do in a stage, they were never outright stated that's what you need to get to other routes. That's not modernizing it, that's taking away part of the fun.
I don't even know why they have this, if people really want to know how to do these routes, look it up online. It's not hard to do that.
I'm just glad it won't make any difference to me, but that's why Star Fox 64 wasn't even a short game for all 3 routes, you inevitably would fail some of these, either via difficulty or not getting or knowing how to get a route. It was very natural replayability that fit into what the game is.
