Anyone who thought the 'drop the prices' meme was an indicator that people wouldn't buy were delusional from the beginning. I'm not saying that they don't believe the prices are too high, myself included. BUT, Mario Kart, DK, Metroid, Pokemon are all looking SOLID and are coming out this year. This console has too many blockbusters to fail. I gotta tip my hat to Nintendo, they know how to do a launch. In the end the console sold out in NA in minutes, and the small waves that followed through the night did the same. Luckily I managed to snag one for myself, and a second to raffle in a raffling group I am part of, on Target and Walmart.

My question to you all is, were your own predictions right? Also, did you manage to snag any Switch 2s last night?

If you didn't have any luck last night, I wish you the best of luck with GameStop today, don't give up hope and beat the scalpers!

I'm in no rush.

If I don't get the My Store email on the 8th then perhaps I'll get it...someday.

@Magician Jesus, I just saw your physical collection in your footer. Do you plan to start collecting physical for Switch 2 already, before you get the console; If you don't get one right away?

I intended to.

Unfortunately early indications are that a majority of Switch 2 physical releases will be game-key cards.

I have zero interest in purchasing a single game-key card game. I would rather have it digitally.

Not something I like to have to do...

That guy is really into exaggerating lately, so I would take what he says with a grain of salt. There is zero proof the “majority” of physical releases will be game key cards. When people talk in extremes like that, I tend to look elsewhere for my info.

In terms of how the launch is going, people on the internet tend to fall into the trap of thinking they are the majority and that their viewpoint is the one everybody holds. When you’re typing “drop the price” with hundreds/thousands of other people in a livestream, it goes to your head.

But with the early numbers coming out for pre orders, it’s pretty crazy how many systems Nintendo managed to make available, and for them to sell out is obviously a good sign.

Anecdotal point but most of the people I know who have a Switch did not get it early. Certainly not on day 1 like I did. They were all 6 months later, a year later, a couple of years later. It seems to me, in my friend/family circle at least, there's more early enthusiasm for Switch 2. Lots of people already with pre-orders

Notably my sister picked up a Switch in the second half of 2017. Because a retailer had a deal with ARMS and I offered to buy her a copy of Mario Kart 8 if I could have ARMS. Also she took some confidence from my confidence that there would surely be an Animal Crossing on Switch

The other day I asked her if she watched the Mario Kart Direct and she just says "I pre-ordered the bundle"

@Konsori no luck for me. In terms of predictions, stores selling out quickly was inevitable but given how much Nintendo talked about preparing for a big first year and working against scalpers, I didn't expect them to so quickly jump from 'pre-orders start in May' on Nintendo.com to a big long warning that it might be many months and you should try to get it in a store. I wonder how many people signed up on the website to create that reaction — it just said 'Due to the very high demand'.

I didn't say there was proof. I said, "early indications". How many third party published games that are being made available "physically" are not game-key card games? The minority.

You're definitely wrong here. What @Magician (or Jace Beleren) has said is appearing to be right unfortunately.

There is something about it that I am coming aroung too though, which is sad as I am a big physical collector.
An that is that I am going to have to be far more selective with my purchases. I know full well there will be some that I definitely won't buy due to it being card key only.

I'm resigning myself to the fact that it very much will be a Switch game player, which considering my library isn't exactly a bad thing, it sure is an essential for what needed to be on Switch 2.

@sovietprince Me too bro, I'm glad you managed to snag one. Luckily mine says delivered by June 5th. I'm seeing a lot of people having their pushed back to like June 11th delivery. Hopefully ours makes it on launch day.

@FishyS If I had to guess, anyone who was a switch online member for a year and had at least 50 hours of gameplay, was already a hardcore nintendo fan. For them to put that it was already in high demand on their site, must mean that they already have more demand than consoles to sell when may 8th comes around If I had to guess though, those same hardcore fans like me and you probably already secured the bag at BB, Walmart, Target or Gamestop. So, we might let our invite pass, and through that action perhaps they can finish securing the bag for the rest of the hardcore fans.

The only shame might come from the hardcore fans that aren't online members, like the rpg enjoyers who don't play online. If they didn't get a switch 2 at retail, and weren't elegible for the Nintendo store reservation, they just might be SOL. If any of you are in that camp, good luck!

@Konsori preorder night was demoralizing from midnight to 2am+. Best Buy had me "in line!" and then kicked me out 20-45 minutes later, that happened three times, from 12:30am to 2am, leaving me with nothing. A properly awful expreience. I landed a switch 2 on walmart that night, but then I saw the shipping said arriving june 6-7, and I wasn't ready for that BS since all the marketing had said by 9am June 5th. So, I cancelled that.

Around noon, I skeptically drove to gamestop 30 minutes after they opened, and amazingly, I got the second to the last preorder left, securied a switch 2 + physical Mario Kart World.

While I did want the MKW bundle for two weeks, I realized two days ago, when I unbox a switch 2, I just want to be able to throw in a physical Mario Kart World and boot it up. So, that's why I went physical. I just don't want hurdles and clutter of dealing with my existing Nintendo account, linking it to the switch 2 and then downloading 23GB from eshop....... and then, "Oh wait! Shouldn't I do a user transfer from my switch to switch 2?".

@WoomyNNYes I get wanting to have a physical card for a quicker launch on the day you get a game. However, think about the benefits of digital. It makes portability better since you don't have to carry cards around. Also, it is just a download the first time, after that you are all good. Personally, I am all digital, I have like 70~80 games digital and I love just being able to take the entire library on the go.

As for the system transfer, I wish they'd put out more information about it. Like will it move everything including game downloads? Or is it limited to profile transfers like switch 1? I hope it moves games too, because the current system transfer doesn't do that, just moves profiles and requires redownloading everything.

@Rosona
Actually no, they’re not. Allow me to explain.

Ironically enough, @Magician is the one who started the physical releases thread for Switch 2. And according to their own thread, the majority of launch games are on-cartridge physical releases. That includes some of the third-party stuff like Cyberpunk.

Now, being realistic, I think long term there will be more game key card releases plus digital-only releases than physical. But I have nagging suspicion that the same statement could even be made about the Switch 1.

How many hundreds or potentially thousands of eShop releases are digital only? Especially the tiny games, the trash games, etc.

If you simply count a game as a game, then this whole thing has already been “true” on the Switch, which is why I find the sudden gnashing of teeth to be rather fascinating.

@rallydefault

More accurately. I created both the physical release and the game-key card threads.

The number of game-key card releases are outpacing physical releases. Plain and simple.

@Magician
lol ok so now you’re concerned with being accurate? Good to hear.

Alright, so what are the numbers, then? From what I’m seeing, it looks like 15 games on your physical list and 19 on your game key?

rallydefault

Magician

@rallydefault

Game-key cards have more than 19 confirmed. We've got a weird situation where different regions get different variants of releases. For example. In North America, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is a cartridge release. In Japan, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is game-key card release.

@Magician
That is strange.

There are some companies going out of their way to stress that their releases will be on the cartridge. The Rune Factory game comes to mind.

I think some publishers are aware of the negative reactions to the code-in-a-box we’ve seen in the last generation and now the game key cards, but I wonder what the actual sales data says.
